  • The Extreme ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) on board Hinode provide us with excellent imaging spectroscopic data with very good spatial and spectral resolutions, which can be used for detecting Doppler flows in transition region and coronal lines as well as diagnosing plasma properties such as temperature, density, and non-thermal velocity. In this study we have made an EUV-imaging spectroscopic study of the source region of a partial halo coronal mass ejection (CME) that occurred on 2007 July 9 in NOAA 10961. Dopplergrams are obtained before and after the CME eruption using 12 EIS spectral lines (Log T= 4.9~7.2). Major results are summarized as follows. First, it is noted that either red shifts disappeared or blue shifts newly appeared for all spectral lines lower than Log T =6.0. Second, there were significant intensity increases for all wavelengths. Third, there were no significant variations in non-thermal motions for all wavelengths. We found one interesting bright point that newly appeared after the CME eruption. We discuss the implication on the results in terms of the CME eruption.

  • The Solar-B is the third Japanese spacecraft dedicated for solar physics to be launched in summer of 2006. The spacecraft carries a coordinated set of optical, EUV and X-ray instruments that will allow a systematic study of the interaction between the Sun's magnetic field and its high temperature, ionized atmosphere. The Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) consists of a 50cm aperture diffraction limited Gregorian telescope and a focal plane package, and provides quantitative measurements of full vector magnetic fields at the photosphere with spatial resolution of 0.2-0.3 arcsec in a condition free from terrestrial atmospheric seeing. The X-ray telescope (XRT) images the high temperature (0.5 to 10 MK) corona with improved spatial resolution of approximately 1 arcsec. The Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) aims to determine velocity fields and other plasma parameters in the corona and the transition region. The Solar-B telescopes, as a whole, will enable us to explore the origins of the outer solar atmosphere, the corona, and the coupling between the fine magnetic structure at the photosphere and the dynamic processes occurring in the corona. The mission instruments (SOT/EIS/XRT) are joint effort of Japan (JAXA/NAO), the United States (NASA), and the United Kingdom (PPARC). An overview of the spacecraft and its mission instruments are presented.

  • On 21 August 2017, during 16:49 UT and 20:02 UT period, a total solar eclipse started. The totality shadow occurred over the United States in time between ~17:15 UT and ~18:47 UT. When the solar radiation is blocked by the moon, observations of the ionospheric parameters will be important in the space weather community. Fortunately, during this eclipse, two Swarm satellites (A and C) flied at about 445 km through lunar penumbra at local noon of United States in the upper ionosphere. In this work, we investigate the effect of the solar eclipse on electron density, slant total electron content (STEC) and electron temperature using data from Swarm mission over United States. We use calibrated measurements of plasma density and electron temperature. Our results indicate that: (1) the electron density and STEC have a significant depletion associated with the eclipse; which could be due to dominance of dissociative recombination over photoionization caused by the reduction of ionizing extreme ultraviolet (EUV) radiation during the eclipse time (2) the electron temperature decreases, compared with a reference day, by up to ~150 K; which could be due to the decrease in photoelectron heating from reduced photoionization.

  • We report a fine scale transient brightening event near a pore boundary with the Fast Imaging Solar Spectrograph (FISS) of the 1.6m Goode Solar Telescope (GST), the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) aboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), and Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) aboard SDO. The event appears in all AIA extreme ultraviolet bands, also in the two FISS lines, $H{\alpha}$ and Ca II $8542{\AA}$, and lasted for a minute. The brightening occurred at a footpoint of a loop. The conjugate brightening occurred at the other foot point outside the FISS field of view. The brightening near the pore exhibit a redshift of 4.3 km s-1 in the $H{\alpha}$ and about 2.3 km s-1 in Ca II line. Differential emission measure derived from 6 AIA EUV passbands and cloud model fitting of the two FISS lines indicate the temperature increase of between 10,000 and 20 MK at the main event. After the brightening, the upward mass motion appears in the AIA images. We discuss the physical implication of this brightening in the context of magnetic reconnection and coronal heating.

VALIDATION OF AURIC MODEL WITH EUV/FUV DAYGLOW OBSERVATION OF STP78-1 SATELLITE (STP78-1 위성의 극자외선/원자외선 낮대기광 관측자료를 이용한 AURIC 모델의 검증)

  • We carried out a validation study on AURIC FUV/EUV dayglow calculation with $OII\;834{\AA},\;OI\;989{\AA},\;OI\;1027{\AA},\;NII\;1085{\AA},\;NI\;1134{\AA},\;NI\;1200{\AA},\;OI\;1304{\AA},\;OI\;1356{\AA}$ dayglows observed by STP78-1 satellite. Comparison between calculated and observed values indicates that they are in agreement within about 20% for dayglows of $OII\;834{\AA},\;OI\;1027{\AA},\;NI\;1200{\AA},\;OI\;1304{\AA}$. However, the calculated intensities of $OI\;989{\AA},\;NII\;1085{\AA},\;NI\;1134{\AA}$ are only 42, 74 and 45% of the observed values, respectively, showing serious differences from the observation. It was surmised that the differences in $OI\;989{\AA}\;and\;NI\;1134{\AA}$ are due to incomplete calculation of radiative transfer and uncertain photochemical processes in AURIC model, respectively. The difference in $NII\;1085{\AA}$ is conjectured to be due to variation of the input solar EUV flux rather than due to AURIC model itself. For up-looking dayglows from the satellite, the calculated values from AURIC are all less than those of STP78-1, which may imply that AURIC model does not include dayglow contribution from regions below the satellite altitude when it computes dayglows in up-looking direction. The differences are particularly serious for $OI\;989{\AA},\;NI\;1134{\AA},\;NI\;1200{\AA}$ dayglows. The calculated latitudinal variation of $OII\;834{\AA}$ dayglow is also significantly different from the observed one, especially at mid-latitude regions. This may be due to inability of MSISE-90 (in input of AURIC) to simulate oxygen atom densities at mid-latitudes during auroral storms at those days of STP78-1 observations. Our findings of the validation study should be resolved when AURIC model is revised in future.

  • We have generated the argon plasma in the diode chamber based on the established coaxial electrode type and investigated the emitted visible light for emission spectroscopy. We applied various voltages $2\sim3.5kV$ to the device by 0.5kV, and obtained the emission spectrum data for the focused plasma in the diode chamber on the argon pressure of 330 mTorr. The Ar I and Ar II emission line are observed. The electron temperature and ion density have been measured by the Boltzmann plot and Saha equation from assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) The Ar I and Ar II ion densities have been calculated to be $\sim10^{15}/cc\;and\;~10^{13}/cc$, respectively, from Saha equation.

  • We have investigated a supra-arcade structure associated with an M1.6 flare, which occurred on the south-east limb in the 4th of November 2010. It is ob- served in extreme ultraviolet (EUV) with the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), microwaves at 17 and 34 GHz with the Nobeyama Radioheliograph (NoRH), and soft X-rays of 8-20 keV with the Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI). Interestingly, we found exceptional properties of the supra-arcade thermal plasma from the AIA 131 A and the NoRH: 1) plasma upflows along large coronal loops and 2) enhancing microwave emission. RHESSI detected two soft X-ray sources, a broad one in the middle of supra-arcade structure and a bright one just above the flare-arcade. We estimated the number density and thermal energy for these two source regions during the decay phase of the flare. In the supra-arcade source, we found that there were increases of the thermal energy and the density at the early and the last stages, respectively. On the contrary, the density and thermal energy of the source on the top of the flare-arcade decreases throughout. The observed upflows imply that there is continuous energy supply into the supra- arcade structure from below during the decay phase of the flare. It is hard to be explained by the standard flare model in which the energy release site is located high in corona. Thus, we suggest that the potential candidate as the energy source for the hot supra-arcade structure is the flare-arcade which has exhibited a predominant emission throughout.
