In order to study bread properties utilizing extracts of pine needle, various mixing percentage were applied to select appropriate ratio between water and extracts. Dough pH, dough pH after first fermentation, dough volume, bread volume and baking loss rate were tested to investigate bread properties after adding extracts of pine needle to bread. The results were summarized as follows; The effects of extracts percentage on pH value of dough according to preparation method were the lowest in the method of hot air drying of pine needle powder. After first fermentation, dough pH was tended to have a the same tendency as above. Dough volume and bread volume were tended to be increased as extracts percentage of pine needle were increased. The percentage of baking loss tended to be a little increased as addition level of extracts was increased. Strength of hardness were increased as storage time passed away. In conclusion, the taste and texture of bread were tended to be decreased as storage time goes, but the strength of pine needle flavour were tended to be increased as addition level of extracts were increased, irrespective of preparation method.
Objects : This study was performed in order to observe the effects of water extract of Dendrobii herba on intracerebral hemorrhage(ICH), Method : ICH was induced by the stereotaxic intrastriatal injection of bacterial collagenase type IV in Sprague-Dawley rats. After the water extracts of Dendrobii herba were administrated orally once a day for 3 days, hematoma volume, percentage of brain edema, expression of iNOS and MPO were observed using immunohistochemistry. Results : Rats fed with water extracts of Dendrobii herba showed reduction of hematoma volume and percentage of brain edema compared with controls. In addition, Infiltration of myeloperoxidase (MPO) expressing neutrophil and expression of inducible nitric oxide synthatase(iNOS) were significantly reduced in rats fed with water extracts of Dendrobii herba. Conclusion : These results demonstrated that water extracts of Dendrobii herba reduced brain damage of intracerebral hemorrhage(ICH) and subsequent ICH-induced cerebral edema, and inhibited neutrophil infiltration.
The methanol extracts of the roots, root bark and stem of Berberis tinctoria, were investigated for their hepatoprotective activity against carbon tetrachloride $(CCl_4)$ induced toxicity in freshly isolated rat hepatocytes, HEp-G2 cells and animal models. The methanol extracts were able to significantly normalise the levels of aspartate amino transferase, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, triglycerides, total proteins, albumin, total bilirubin and direct bilirubin, which were altered due to $CCl_4$ intoxication in freshly isolated rat hepatocytes and also in animal models. The anti-hepatotoxic effect of the methanol extracts in vitro were observed at $600\;-\;1,000\;{\mu}g/ml$ concentrations. A dose dependent increase in the percentage viability was observed when $CCl_4$ exposed HEp-G2 cells were treated with different concentrations of the methanol extracts. The highest percentage viability of HEp-G2 was observed at a concentration of $1,000\;{\mu}g/ml$. The results from the present investigations also indicate good correlation between the in vivo and in vitro studies.
The present investigation was designed to assess the anticancer activity of six different leaf extracts (ethyl acetate, methanol, chloroform, petroleum ether, n-butanol, and water soluble) of Abelia triflora on A-549 human lung adenocarcinoma epithelial cells. A-549 cells were exposed to $10-1000{\mu}g/ml$ concentrations of the leaf extracts of A. triflorafor 24 h and then percentage cell viability was assessed by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2yl)-2,5-biphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. The results showed that leaf extracts of A. triflora significantly reduced the viability of A-549 cells in a concentration-dependent manner. Decrease was recorded as 31% with ethyl acetate, 36% with methanol, 46% with chloroform, 54% with petroleum ether, 62% with n-butanol, and 63% with water soluble extracts at $1000{\mu}g/ml$ each. Among the various plant extracts, ethyl acetate extract showed the highest decrease in the percentage cell viability, followed by methanol, chloroform, petroleum ether, n-butanol, and water soluble extracts. Our results demonstrated preliminary screening of anticancer activity of different soluble extracts of A. triflora extracts against A-549 cells, which can be further used for the development of a potential therapeutic anticancer agents.
Greenhouse and laboratory studies were conducted to investigate allelopathic potential of some weed species on alfalfa(Medicago sativa L.) germination and seedling growth. In the comparison between top(leaves+stems) and root extracts, top extract exhibited greater allelopathic effects on alfalfa germination than that of root. The various weed species extract differently responded to alfalfa test species, WL-320, in terms of allelopathic effect. Top and root aqueous extracts of lambsquarter(Chenopodium album L.), giant foxtail(Setaria faberii Herrm.), redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus L.), velvetleaf(Abutilon theophrasti Medic.), crabgrass(Digitaria sanguinalis L.), canada thistle(Cirsium arvense L.) and prostrate knotweed(Polygonium aviculare L.) significantly inhibited germination, seedling length, weight, vigor, and rate of germination of alfalfa. The regression slopes of various top extracts showed that velvetleaf(b=3.69) extracts were the most inhibitory, while large crabgrass(b=2.39) extracts had the least allelopathic effect on alfalfa germination. Germination, seedling length and weight of alfalfa were inversely proportional to the concentration of dried velvetleaf extracts. Also, more of the toxic effects were observed from the dried extracts compared to the fresh extracts. Residue of velvetleaf inhibited significantly alfalfa emergence and survival percentage compared to the control. The emergence and survival percentage of alfalfa were 44%, 57% at 1.0% residue treatment, respectively. When weed residues were mixed with silica sand with incubation time, velvetleaf residue most inhibited alfalfa growth. The degree of inhibition increased as incubation time increased. An incubation for 72h caused the greatest inhibition of alfalfa growth. These results demonstrate the different allelopathic activity of weed species extracts on alfalfa and suggest that weed may affect alfalfa growth and development through the inhibitory effects of allelochemicals present in weed tissue.
In vitro biological activities of Aloe vera gel and skin extracts were evaluated. Total polyphenol contents of Aloe vera skin were measured 41.12 mg/g. DPPH radical scavenging activity of Aloe vera skin-70% EtOH extract, Aloe vera skin-water extract, Aloe vera gel-70% EtOH extract and Aloe vera gel-water extract were 55%, 38%, 11% and 10%, respectively. In addition, 70% EtOH extract and water extract were compared with respect to SOD-like antioxidant activity of Aloe vera-70% EtOH extract has higher activity than Aloe vera water extract. Tyrosinase inhibition rate of Aloe vera gel extract was higher than Aloe vera skin extract. Alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and Acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) relative percentage activity of Aloe vera gel extract were 126% and 216%, respectively. It was suggested that Aloe vera gel and skin extracts could be used as a functional biomaterial for functional food and cosmetics.
Dried top and root extracts of seven different weed species, fresh top and root extracts, and various concentrations of extract (0, 5, 10 and 15%, W/V) and residue rate (0.0, 0.25. 0.5, 0.75 and 1.0%) of velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti Medic.) were used to study their allelopathic effects on alfalfa in the laboratory and greenhouse. Top and root aqueous extracts of common lambsquarter (Chenopodium album L.), giant foxtail (Setaria faberii Herrm), redroot pig-weed (Amaranthus retroflexus L), velvetleaf, large crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis L), canada thistle (Cirsium arvense L.) and prostrate knotweed (Polygonium aviculare L.) significantly inhibited germination, seedling length, weight, and vigor in alfalfa. Top growth extracts of weeds exhibited greater allelopathic effects than root extracts. Alfalfa test species, WL-320, responded significantly different to the various weed species extracts in terms of allelopathic effect. The regression slopes of various top extracts showed significant variation with respect to germination percentage. Velvetleaf (b=3.69) extracts were the most inhibitory, while large crabgrass (b=2.39) extracts had the least allelopathic effect on alfalfa. When compared the activity of fresh velvetleaf extract to that of dry velvetleaf extract, dry extract was more inhibitory to alfalfa germination and seedling growth. Germination, seedling length and weight of alfalfa were inversely proportional to the concentration of dried velvetleaf extracts. Seedling emergence and survival percentage was inhibited by velvetleaf residue mixture treatment. Also, more of the toxic effects were observed from the dried top extracts, as compared to extracts from fresh top and root. These results demonstrate the allelopathic activity of different weed species extracts and suggest that weeds may affect crop growth and development due to the inhibitory effects of allelochemicals present in weed tissue.
Rice (Oryza sativa L.) contains water-soluble substances that inhibit the germination of Echinochloa crus-galli. This study investigated the allelopathic potential of rice in which rice had been grown with E. crus-galli in the field. Extracts of forty-seven rice varieties were screened for allelopathic potential in the laboratory. Double distilled water was used as a control. Based on the germination percentage, the varieties may be classified in the following order of decreasing inhibition : Namweon(36%) and Gyehwa(38%) hulls extracts and Sambaeg(43%) and Seoan(46%) leaves extracts. In the comparison of allelopathic activity test between leaves and hulls extracts, hulls extracts contain more allelopathic toxic substances. In the effect of concentration treatment on the six levels of extract solutions(3, 6, 12, 25, 50, 100%, v/v) germination percentage was significantly inhibited as the extract concentration increased. The highest concentration(100%) caused the greatest reduction in E. crus-galli. Allelopathic potential effects were significantly different among the various varieties and between '94 and '95 year extracts. The results indicate that there are genetic differences among varieties for allelopathic potentiality on E. crus-galli. Allelopathic potential in the ecological aspects can be decided through variety selection.
Tinospora crispa (L.) is a medicinal plant traditionally used to treat various ailments including diabetes. The stem has been widely studied for its antidiabetic properties, however the antidiabetic potential of its leaves has not been explored. This study investigates the antidiabetic properties of methanolic T. crispa stem and leaves extracts on alloxan-induced diabetic rats. The stems and leaves were extracted using Soxhlet extraction with methanol as solvent. Crude extracts were administered at 500 mg/kg body weight (BW) (high dose) and 250 mg/kg BW (low dose) via oral route to alloxan induced diabetic rats. T. crispa stem and leaves extracts was found to significantly reduce blood glucose following a twelve-week treatment period. The highest mean difference in blood glucose level was exhibited by animals in the high dose treated stem and low dose leaf extracts. Both extracts showed approximately 75% percentage recovery from hyperglycaemia. The highest regenerative capacity was observed in animals treated with the low dose leaf extract.

The studies have been conducted to control the soil borne fungal pathogens viz, Fusarium solani (Mart) Sacc. and Alternaria tenuissima the incitants of root rot and die-back diseases on mulberry stem cuttings planted in the mulberry nurseries and also in established mulberry gardens ten plant extracts with 10% concentration except Lantana camara (undiluted) were tested through poisoned food technique and four biofungicides were also screened by dual culture method under in vitro conditions. Plant extract of Prosopis juliflora showed the maximum inhibition on the mycelial growth (81.2% over A. tenuissima and 80.0% over F. solani) and followed by L. camara (66.7% over A. tenuissima and 68.9% over F. solani). Among the antagonists Pseudomonas fluorescens and Trichoderma viride showed maximum inhibition on the mycelial growth of both pathogenic fungi. The promising plant extracts (P. juliflora and L. camara) and antagonists (P. fluorescens and T. viride) were tested against both the pathogenic fungi under in vivo conditions along with the existing popular chemical Mancozeb. All the tested plant products and bio-fungicides showed inhibitory effect on both fungi. But the maximum survival percentage of mulberry cuttings was recorded in the treatment with T. viride (95% against F. solani and 90% against A. tenuisssima) followed by P. fluorescens (90% against both fungi) and T. harzianum (80% against F. solani and 85% against A. tenuisssima). Incase of the treatments with plant extracts and chemical fungicide the P. juliflora (60% against F. solani and 55% against A. tenuisssima) showed higher survival percentage and followed by L. camara (55% against F. solani and 50% against A. tenuisssima) and Mancozeb (55% against both fungi). In case of control only 10% of survival was recorded in F. solani inoculated cuttings and 15% survival in A. tenuissima inoculated cuttings.
