Changes in maximum lip-closing force after extraction and nonextraction orthodontic treatments

  • Objective: The aims of the present study were to evaluate the changes in the maximum lip-closing force (MLF) after orthodontic treatment with or without premolar extractions and verify the correlation of these changes with dentoskeletal changes. Methods: In total, 17 women who underwent nonextraction orthodontic treatment and 15 women who underwent orthodontic treatment with extraction of all four first premolars were included in this retrospective study. For all patients, lateral cephalograms and dental models were measured before (T0) and after (T1) treatment. In addition, MLF was measured at both time points using the Lip De Cum LDC-110R® device. Statistical analyses were performed to evaluate changes in clinical variables and MLF and their correlations. Results: Both groups showed similar skeletal patterns, although the extraction group showed greater proclination of the maxillary and mandibular incisors and lip protrusion compared to the nonextraction group at T0. MLF at T0 was comparable between the two groups. The reduction in the arch width and depth and incisor retroclination from T0 to T1 were more pronounced in the extraction group than in the nonextraction group. MLF in the extraction group significantly increased during the treatment period, and this increase was significantly greater than that in the nonextraction group. The increase in MLF was found to be correlated with the increase in the interincisal angle and decrease in the intermolar width, arch depth, and incisor-mandibular plane angle. Conclusions: This study suggests that MLF increases to a greater extent during extraction orthodontic treatment than during nonextraction orthodontic treatment.

영상정합을 이용한 지문 인증 성능 향상 (Performance Improvement of Fingerprint Verification using Image Matching)

  • 특징점 기반 지문 인증은 적은 양의 데이터만을 활용하여 소형화와 속도에서 유리하기 때문에 주로 이용되지만 잘못 추출된 특징점에 의해 지문 인증 오류가 발생된다. 현재 이 문제를 해결하기 위한 많은 방법들이 제안되었다. 하지만 지문입력시 발생하는 잡음등과 같은 외부적 요인과 여러 처리 단계에서 발생하는 내부적 요인 등으로 왜곡 현상을 피하기 어렵기 때문에 전처리 과정의 개선에 의한 오류 감소는 한계를 가지고 있다. 반면에 영상 기반 지문정합은 특징점을 이용하지 않고 영상을 직접 비교하여 특징점에 의한 오류가 발생하지 않는다. 그러나 영상 기반 지문정합은 영상보정이 어려운 단점을 가지고 있다. 본 논문에서는 특징점 기반 지문정합과 영상 기반 지문정합을 함께 수행하여 효과적으로 인증 성능을 향상시키는 방법을 제안한다. 본 논문에서 제안한 알고리즘을 실험한 결과 타인 인증 오류와 본인 거부 오류가 각각 2.7%와 6.5%에서 0.8%와 5.5%로 성능이 향상되었다.

홍경천에 포함된 미백성분의 분리 및 성능검사 (Separation and Performance lest of Wnitening Agent in Rhodiola Sachalinensis)

  • 홍경천 5 g과 메탄올 150 $m\ell$을 혼합하여 상온에서 12시간 추출한 시료를 체류시간에 따라 2부분으로 분류하였다. 이때의 이동상 조성은 다음과 같으며 물/메탄올; 90/10 - 30/70 (vol. %, 5분), 30/70 - 10/90 (vol.%, 15분), 분석용 컬럼 (3.9 ${\times}$ 25 cm, $C_{18}$, 15 $\mu\textrm{m}$)에 세공크기가 300 $\AA$인 충진물을 충전하여 사용하였다. 홍경천 추출물을 이용한 미백성능 측정에서는 알부틴에 비해 효율적인 결과를 얻지 못했지만, 체류 시간에 따라 2부분으로 분리하여 각 부분에 대한 미백성능 검사 결과, melanin-a를 이용하여 in-vivo에서 수행한 멜라닌 합성율 비교한 실험에서 10 ppm의 농도를 기준으로 하는 경우, 알부틴의 45.6%보다 1.0∼4.0분 동안 수집한 #1과, 10.4∼17.6분 동안 수집한 #2가 각각 58.6%, 60%로 우수하게 멜라닌 합성을 저해하는 것을 알 수 있었다.

구개열 환자 발음 판별을 위한 특징 추출 방법 분석 (Analysis of Feature Extraction Methods for Distinguishing the Speech of Cleft Palate Patients)

  • 본 논문에서는 구개열 환자의 장애 발음과 정상인의 발음을 자동으로 구분하여 판별하는데 사용될 수 있는 특징 추출 방법들의 성능을 분석하는 실험에 대하여 소개한다. 이 연구는 발성 장애인의 복지 향상을 추구하며 수행하고 있는 장애 음성 자동 인식 및 복원 소프트웨어 시스템 개발의 기초과정이다. 실험에 사용된 음성 데이터는 정상인의 발음, 구개열 환자의 발음, 그리고 모의 환자의 발음의 세 그룹으로부터 수집된 한국어 단음절로서 14개의 기본 자음과 5개의 복합 자음, 7개 모음이다. 발음의 특징 추출은 LPCC, MFCC, PLP의 세 가지 방법으로 각각 수행하였고, GMM 음향 모델로 인식 훈련을 한 후, 수집된 단음절 데이터를 대상으로 하여 인식 실험을 실시하였다. 실험 결과, 정상인과 구개열 환자의 장애 발음을 구별하기 위하여 특징을 추출함에 있어서 MFCC 방법이 전반적으로 가장 우수하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 구개열 환자의 부정확한 발음을 자동으로 인식하고 복원하는 연구와 구개열 장애 발음의 정도를 측정할 수 있는 도구에 대한 연구에 도움이 될 것으로 기대된다.

Measurement of Antioxidant Activities and Phenolic and Flavonoid Contents of the Brown Seaweed Sargassum horneri: Comparison of Supercritical CO2 and Various Solvent Extractions

  • Seaweed Sargassum horneri extracts were obtained using supercritical carbon dioxide ($SC-CO_2$) and different solvents. $SC-CO_2$ was kept at a temperature of $45^{\circ}C$ and pressure of 250 bar. The flow rate of $CO_2$ (27 g/min) was constant during the entire 2-h extraction period, and ethanol was used as a cosolvent. Six different solvents [acetone, hexane, methanol, ethanol, acetone mix methanol (7:3), and hexane mix ethanol (9:1)] were used for extraction and agitated by magnetic stirring (250 rpm) in the dark at $25^{\circ}C$ for 20 h; the ratio of material to solvent was 1:10 (w/v). Antioxidant properties of S. horneri extracted using $SC-CO_2$ with ethanol and different solvents have shown good activity. The highest activity belongs to $SC-CO_2$ with ethanol extracted oil, showing DPPH, ABTS, total phenolic content, and total flavonoid levels of $68.38{\pm}1.21%$, $83.51{\pm}1.25%$, $0.64{\pm}0.02mg/g$, and $5.57{\pm}0.05mg/g$, respectively. The S. horneri extracts showed a significant correlation between the antioxidant activity and phenolic content. Based on these results, the $SC-CO_2$ extract (ethanol) of the seaweed extract from brown seaweed may be a valuable antioxidant source.

LEACHING OF LEAD FROM DISCARDED NOTEBOOK COMPUTERS USING THE SCALE-UP TCLP AND OTHER STANDARD LEACHING TESTS

  • The proper management of discarded electronic devices (often called electronic-waste) is an emerging issue for solid waste professionals throughout the world because of the large growth of the waste stream, and the content of toxic metals in them, most notably heavy metals such as lead. Notebook computers are becoming one of the major components of discarded computer devices and will continue to increase in the waste stream in the future. While the computers hold great promise for recycling, a substantial amount of this waste is often disposed in municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills. The toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) is commonly used to simulate worse case leaching conditions where a potentially hazardous waste is assumed to be disposed along with municipal solid waste in a landfill with actively decomposing materials overlying an aquifer. The objective of this study was to examine leaching potential of lead from discarded notebook computers using the scale-up TCLP, other standard leaching tests such as California waste extraction test (Cal WET), and the synthetic precipitation leaching procedure (SPLP) and actual landfill leachates as leaching solution. The scale-up TCLP is a modified TCLP (where the device was disassembled and leached in or near entirety) to meet the intent of the TCLP. The results showed that the scale-up TCLP resulted in relatively high lead found in the leachate with an average of 23.3 mg/L. The average level was less than those by the standard TCLP and WET (37.0 mg/L and 86.0 mg/L, respectively), but much greater than those by the SPLP and the extractions with the landfill leachates (0.55 mg/L and 1.47 mg/L, respectively). The pH of the leaching solution and the ability of the organic acids in the TCLP and WET to complex with the lead were identified as major factors that controlled the amount of lead leached from notebook computers. Based on the results obtained by a number of leaching tests in this study, notebook computers may present a potential leaching risk to the environment and human health upon land disposal. However, further investigation is still needed to assess the true risk posed by the land disposal of discarded notebook computers.

Optimization of Acetic Acid Recovery Using Tri-n-alkylphosphine Oxide from Prepulping Extract of Hemicellulose by Response Surface Methodology

  • A single process using hot water (0% green liquor) and green liquor (GL) was investigated for pre-pulping extraction on two types of raw material. The GL was applied at different alkali charges of 0-5% on a dry wood weight basis. The extractions were performed at an H-factor 900 at $180^{\circ}C$. The 0% and 3% GL extraction detected acetic acid (AA) at 10.02 and $9.94g/{\ell}$, extracts derived from hardwood, 2.46 and $3.76g/{\ell}$, extracts derived from softwood, respectively. The single liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) was studied using tri-n-alkylphosphine oxide (TAPO). Response surface methodology (RSM) was employed as an efficient approach for predictive model building and optimization of AA recovery conditions. The extraction of AA was evaluated with a three-level factorial design. Three independent variables, pH (0.5-3.5), temperature ($25-65^{\circ}C$), and residence time (24-48 min) were investigated. Applying the RSM models obtained, the optimal conditions selected of extracts derived from hard- and softwood with a 3% GL were approximately pH 1.4, $26.6^{\circ}C$, 43.8 min and approximately pH 0.7, $25.2^{\circ}C$, 24.6 min, respectively. The predicted and experimental values of AA recovery yield were similar whilst sugar retention was 100%.

열수추출(熱水抽出)에 의한 어패류 추출물의 제조 및 품질 (Studies on Preparation and Quality of Oyster(Crassostrea gigas), Sea mussel(Mytilus coruscus) and Crab(Portanus tribuerculata) Extracts by Water Extraction)

  • 어패류 자원중 기호도가 높은 굴, 홍합, 게를 원료로 하여 열수추출법(熱水抽出法)에 의해 추출물을 제조하고 유리아미노산과 핵산관련물질등 품질을 조사하였다. 추출시험 결과 온도 $95^{\circ}C$에서 추출시간 40분, 가수량은 원료중량의 $1.5{\sim}2$배가 적당하였고 유리아미노산의량은 굴 추출물이 554.17mg%, 홍합 추출물은 765.95mg%, 게 추출물은 1,886.87mg%였으며 맛성분에 관여하는 glutamic acid, glycine, proline 및 alanine등의 양이 전체 유리아미노산의 약 50% 이상을 차지하였다. 핵산관련물질의 량은 굴 추출물이 581.51mg%,홍합 추출물은 941.77mg%, 게 추출물이 606.24mg%였다.

땃두릅(Oplopanax elatus Nakai) 추출물의 면역자극 활성 및 항암 증진 효과 (The Enhanced Effect of Oplopanax elatus Nakai on the Immune System and Antitumor Activity)

  • The present study is designed to explore an anti-tumor activity on crude extracts of Oplopanax elatus. Water extractions of Oplopanax elatus were performed at $100^{\circ}C$(OeE-100). OeE-100 doses up to $62.5{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ had no cytotoxicity on the tumor cell lines in vitro. In experimental lung metastasis of colon26-M3.1 carcinoma or B16-BL6 melanoma, the prophylactic intravenous ($4{\sim}100{\mu}g/mouse$) or oral (2 mg/mouse) administration of OeE-100 significantly inhibited tumor metastasis as compared with tumor controls. Peritoneal macrophages stimulated with OeE-100 produced various cytokines such as TNF-${\alpha}$, IL-6 and IL-12. In an analysis of NK-cell activities, i.v. administration of OeE-100 ($10{\sim}100{\mu}g/mouse$) significantly augmented the cytotoxicity to YAC-1 tumor cells. Vaccination of mice with boiling-treated tumor cells (BT-vaccine) in combination with OeE-100 ($100{\mu}g/mouse$) showed higher inhibitions in tumor metastasis when compared with the mice of BT-vaccine treatment. In addition, the splenocytes from OeE-100 admixed BT-vaccine immunized mice secreted a higher concentration of Th1 type cytokine such as IFN-${\gamma}$. These results suggested that the OeE-100 stimulated immune system and was a good candidate adjuvant of anti-tumor immune responses.

농산물 및 경작지 토양 시료 중 Benzo(a)pyrene 신속잔류분석법 개선 연구 (A Study on Rapid Residual Analysis of Benzo(a)pyrene in Agricultural Products and Soils)

  • BACKGROUND: Benzo(a)pyrene is a highly toxic substance which has been listed as a Group I carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. There have been numerous studies by researchers worldwide on benzo(a)pyrene. Soxhlet, ultrasound-assisted, and liquid-liquid extractions have been widely used for the analysis of benzo(a)pyrene. However these extraction methods have significant drawbacks, such as long extraction time and large amount of solvent usage. To overcome these disadvantages, we aimed to establish a rapid residual analysis of benzo(a)pyrene content in agricultural products and soil samples. METHODS AND RESULTS: A Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged, and Safe (QuEChERS) method was used as the pretreatment procedure. For rapid residual analysis of benzo(a)pyrene, a modified QuEChERS method were used, and the best codition was demonstrated after various performing instrument analysis. The extraction efficiency of this method was also compared with Soxhlet extraction, the current benzo(a)pyrene extracting method. Although both methods showed high recovery rates, the rapid residual analysis method markedly reduced both the measurement time and solvent usage by approximately 97% and 96%, respectively. CONCLUSION: Based on these results, we suggest the rapid residual analysis method established through this study, faster and more efficient analysis of residual benzo(a)pyrene in major agricultural products such as rice, green and red chili peppers and also soil samples.
