  • The Korean government has regulated emission of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) in waste water of manufacturing facilities producing chlorinated compounds since 2009. As this regulation is expected to be reinforced in 2013 to 50 pg I-TEQ/L, a large sample volume is required for the analysis of trace amounts of PCDD/Fs in waste water. Liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) is used to extract PCDD/Fs from aqueous samples; however, its low efficiency makes it inadequate for analyzing large sample volumes. Herein, we present a disk-type solid-phase extraction (SPE) method for the analysis of dioxin at a part per quadrillion level in waste water. This SPE system contains airtight glass covers with a decompression pump, which enables continuous semi-automated extraction. Small (0.5 L) and large (7 L) samples were extracted using LLE and SPE methods, respectively. The method detection limits (MDLs) were 0.001.0.25 and 0.015.4.1 pg I-TEQ/L for the SPE and LLE methods, respectively. The concentrations of detected congeners with both methods were similar. However, the concentrations of several congeners that were not detected with the LLE method were quantified using the SPE method.

  • In a language, noun and keyword extraction is a key element in information processing. When it comes to processing Korean language information, however, there are still a lot of problems with noun and keyword extraction. This paper proposes an effective noun extraction method that considers noun emergence features. The proposed method can be effectively used in areas like information retrieval where large volumes of documents and data need to be processed in a fast manner. In this paper, a category-based keyword construction method is also presented that uses an unsupervised learning technique to ensure high volumes of queries are automatically classified. Our experimental results show that the proposed method outperformed both the supervised learning-based X2 method known to excel in keyword extraction and the DF method, in terms o classification precision.

  • In multi-dimensional image, ICA-based feature extraction algorithm, which is proposed in this paper, is for the purpose of detecting target feature about pixel assumed as a linear mixed spectrum sphere, which is consisted of each different type of material object (target feature and background feature) in spectrum sphere of reflectance of each pixel. Landsat ETM+ satellite image is consisted of multi-dimensional data structure and, there is target feature, which is purposed to extract and various background image is mixed. In this paper, in order to eliminate background features (tidal flat, seawater and etc) around target feature (laver farm) effectively, pixel spectrum sphere of target feature is projected onto the orthogonal spectrum sphere of background feature. The rest amount of spectrum sphere of target feature in the pixel can be presumed to remove spectrum sphere of background feature. In order to make sure the excellence of feature extraction method based on ICA, which is proposed in this paper, laver farm feature extraction from Landsat ETM+ satellite image is applied. Also, In the side of feature extraction accuracy and the noise level, which is still remaining not to remove after feature extraction, we have conducted a comparing test with traditionally most popular method, maximum-likelihood. As a consequence, the proposed method from this paper can effectively eliminate background features around mixed spectrum sphere to extract target feature. So, we found that it had excellent detection efficiency.

  • Isolating total DNA from small samples using traditional methods is difficult and inefficient mainly due to loss of DNA during filtration and precipitation. With advances in molecular pathology, DNA extraction from micro-dissected cells has become essential in handling clinical samples. Genomic DNA extraction using small numbers of cells can be very important to successfully PCR amplify DNA from small biopsy specimens. We compared our experimental genomic DNA extraction method (A) with two other commercially available methods: using spin columns (B), and conventional resins (C), and determined the efficacy of DNA extraction from small numbers of cells smeared on a glass slide. Approximately 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 cells were isolated from fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) slides aspirated from histologically proven papillary thyroid carcinoma masses. DNA was extracted using the three techniques. After measuring DNA quantity, PCR amplification was performed to detect the ${\beta}$-globin and $BRAF^{V600E}$ gene mutations. DNA extracted by method (A) showed better yield than the other methods in all cell groups. With our method, a suitable amount of genomic DNA to produce amplification was extracted from as few as 50 cells, while more than 100 to 200 cells were required when methods (B) or (C) were applied. Our genomic DNA extraction method provides high quality and improved yields for molecular analysis. It will be especially useful for paucicellular clinical samples which molecular pathologists often confront when handling fine needle aspiration cytology, exfoliative cytology and small biopsy specimens.

  • In this paper. we develop associate knowledge extraction method for finding and expanding user preference knowledge automatically from web document database. To reflect user interest or preferences, agent explores and extracts relevant information to central term involving the intent of users from the example documents. To do so, we apply association rule exploration data-mining method to the extraction of the relevant objects in the web documents. Also, to give the weighted-value to the extracted and relevant information, we present associate tag block-based weighting method. We applied to bioinformatics above associate knowledge extraction method to find related keywords.

  • This paper proposes an efficient method for computing the 3-dimensional capacitance of complex structures. The proposed method is based on applying numerical 2-dimensional capacitance extraction formula for 3-dimensional interconnect models. This method improves the extraction efficiency 952 times while compromising the accuracy within 1.8 percentage of maximal relative error, compared with the results of Fastcap program for various 3-D models. The proposed method can be used efficiently to extract electrical parameters of on/off-chip interconnects in VLSI systems.

  • A method is described for the determination of the Po nuclides in a water sample. After the Po nuclides were purified from interfering elements in a water sample using a manganese dioxide precipitation followed by a solvent extraction method, the Po nuclides were deposited onto the silver plate. A large volume of the water sample was effectively pretreated with manganese dioxide precipitation method. To determine the optimum conditions for plating Po, the effects of the pH, volume, temperature and time on the Po deposition were investigated in hydrochloric acid solution. The investigated determination method of Po nuclides with solvent extraction was applied to a tap water sample.

  • Lip reading is a field of image processing to assist the process of sound recognition. In some environment, the capture of sound signal usually has significant noise and therefore, the recognition rate of sound signal decreases. Lip reading can be a good feature for the increase of recognition rates. Conventional lip extraction methods have been proposed widely. Maia et. al. proposed a method by the sum of Cr and Cb. However, there are two problems as follows: the point with maximum saturation is not always regarded as lips region and the inner part of lips such as oral cavity and teeth can be classified as lips. To solve these problems, this paper proposes a method which adopts the histogram-based classifier for the extraction of lips region. The proposed method consists of two stages, learning and test. The amount of computation is minimized because this method has no color conversion. The performance of proposed method gives 66.8% of detection rate compared to 28% of conventional ones.

  • A simple and efficient cloud point extraction-spectrofluorimetric method for the determination of thiamine in human urine is proposed. The procedure is based on the oxidation of thiamine with ferricyanide to form thiochrome, its extraction to Triton X-114 micelles and spectrofluorimetric determination. The variables affecting oxidation of thiamine, extraction and phase separation were studied and optimized. Under the experimental conditions used, the calibration graphs were linear over the range 2.5-1000 ng $mL^{-1}$. The limit of detection was 0.78 ng $mL^{-1}$ of thiamine and the relative standard deviation for 5 replicate determinations of thiamine at 400 ng $mL^{-1}$ concentration level was 2.42%. Average recoveries between 93-107% were obtained for spiked samples. The proposed method was applied to the determination of thiamine in human urine.
