  • In this paper, temporal variables of French oral discourse are analyzed and interpreted. They are distinguished in two Troops, the temporal external variable and the temporal internal variable The external variable is determined by the breathing function as the physical condition of the verbal message and the internal variable is directly associated with multiple effects by the accentuation on final syllable of rhythmic group in actual French. Temporal variables, external and internal, are taken as devices of verbal support that serve to create immediate effects of oral production.

  • Purpose: This study examined the muscle activity of the trunk muscles during weight shifting exercises on a stable and unstable surface. Methods: Ten healthy young subjects (4 males, 6 females) with no medical history of lower-extremity or lumbar spine disease were enrolled in this study. The muscle activity was recorded using surface electromyography (EMG) electrodes from the both sides of the external obliques and erector spinae muscles. Results: The EMG activities of the both rectus abdominalis, both external obliques and erector spinae muscles were significantly higher when the weight shifting exercise was performed on a firm surface than when a balance pad with a balance ball was used. In weight shifting exercises, the EMG activity of the contralateral external obliques and erector spinae muscles was significantly higher than that of the ipsilateral external obliques and erector spinae muscles under all three support surface conditions. Conclusion: Performing weight shifting exercise using an unstable surface is a useful method for facilitating the trunk-muscle strength and trunk stability.

  • It has been verified that there is an effect of diminishing in section bringing in internal core section reinforcement and external prestressing rather than general plate-girder bridge as a consequence of analysis. In particular, positive effect was seen in the aspect of usability when external prestressing was in application as rises gained from it minimized the hanging down of a bridge. Based on the result of analysis, a sectional diagram applicable per number of girder has been illustrated which made it possible to estimate the intensity of internal stress in the futurewhere number of girder is limited to 4 and regression equation is presented after regression analysis has been carried out.

  • Recently, the using PSC with external unbonded tendons is increased. However, the behavior of external unbonded tendons is different with that of bonded internal tendon at ultimate state by compatibility condition, the slip with friction at deviator and the change of tendon eccentricity e.t.c., So, the analytical research considered the effect of these inherent characters was performed and the tendency of external unbonded tendons was estimated by numerical examples. By the analytical results, load-deflection relationship and stress increment of external unbonded tendons were similar to those of internal bonded tendon at initial elastic behavior state. Those characters were, however, smaller than those character of internal bonded tendons. For external unbonded tendons, if the 1 deviator which is positioned at maximum moment point and more 2 deviators which are position between maximum moment point and support are existed, the flexural behavior is similar to internal bonded tendons.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate perceived discomfort of working postures in terms of upper body (back, shoulder, and elbow) flexions when an external load varies. Eighteen subjects participated in an experiment of appraising perceived discomfort of varying upper body postures with three levels of external loads given. The ANOVA results showed that the perceived discomfort of upper body postures was significantly affected by the external load. It was also apparent that the interactions between external load and upper body posture were significant (p< 0.001). The result implies that a new posture classification scheme for workload assessment methods may be in need to reflect such interactions between external load and upper body posture. In order to support the statement, a regression model of perceived discomfort of upper body postures obtained from the experiment was developed and compared to that of perceived discomfort of seven work-related postures found in automobile assembly operations. The correlation coefficient between predicted and actual values of perceived discomfort was about 0.96. It is expected that the result help to properly estimate the body stress resluting from worker's postures and external loads and can be used as a valuable design guideline on preventing work-related musculoskeletal diseases in industry.

  • This study investigates faculty support for quality assurance in online education, and offers suggestions for its improvement based on feedback from Instructional Design (ID) staff working at a public university in the U.S. Qualitative research using semi-structured interviews was conducted with seven ID staff in order to examine their perceptions regarding faculty support related to quality assurance in online education. The results of the data analysis indicate that four types of faculty support-quality assurance reviews using Quality Matter (QM) standards, templates, individual consultations with ongoing support, and monitoring-were offered for faculty. Faculty support for quality assurance in online education could be improved by developing specific quality assurance standards, recruiting external experts, examining learning effects, developing a quality assurance management system, and sharing documents among ID staff. This study highlights the necessity of quality assurance in online education and provides cases of faculty support in a real higher education setting.

  • Integrity of authorship and peer review practices are important considerations for ethical publishing. Criteria for authorship, as delineated in the guidelines by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), have undergone evolution over the decades, and now require fulfillment of four criteria, including the need to be able to take responsibility for all aspects of the manuscript in question. Although such updated authorship criteria were published nearly five years ago, still, many major medical and specialist journals have yet to revise their author instructions to conform to this. Inappropriate authorship practices may include gift, guest or ghost authorship. Existing literature suggests that such practices are still widely prevalent, especially in non-English speaking countries. Another emerging problem is that of peer review fraud, mostly by authors, but also rarely by handling editors. There is literature to suggest that a proportion of such fake peer review may be driven by the support of some unscrupulous external editing agencies. Such inappropriate practices with authorship malpractices or disagreement, or peer review fraud, have resulted in more than 600 retractions each, as identified on the retractions database of Retractionwatch.com. There is a need to generate greater awareness, especially in authors from non-English speaking regions of the world, about inappropriate authorship and unethical practices in peer review. Also, support of any external editing agency should be clearly disclosed by authors at the time of submission of a manuscript.

  • To improve the understanding of infiltration characteristic of modified slurry and the support efficiency of filter cake in silty sand strata, the slurry infiltration (SI) and filter cake formation (FCF) were investigated in a laboratory apparatus. The water discharge and the excess pore pressure at different depths of silty sand strata were measured during SI. The relationship between permeability coefficient/thickness ratio of filter cake (kc/ΔL) and effective slurry pressure conversion rate of filter cake (η) were analyzed. Moreover, the SI and FCF process as well as the modification mechanism of CMC (carboxymethyl cellulose) were clarified. The experimental results indicate the formation of only external filter cake in the silty sand strata. The slurry particles obtain thicker water membrane after being modified by CMC, which blocks partial water path in filter cake and decreases the water discharge significantly. The silty sand excavated from tunnel face also contributes to the water discharge reduction. The kc of the external filter cake ranges from 3.83×10-8 cm/s to 7.44×10-8 cm/s. The η of the external filter cake is over 96%, which decreases with increasing kc/ΔL. A silty sand content within 10% is suggested during construction to ensure the uniformity of the filter cake.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the muscle activity during a push-up on a suspension sling and a fixed support at the same level. Tests were performed on 15 male subjects. Electromyography using a surface EMG recorded the activity of the triceps, pectoralis major, and internal and external oblique muscles during each push-up. EMG activity was recorded at 0, 45, and 90 degrees of elbow flexion in the push-up position on a suspension sling or a fixed support at the same height above the floor (30 cm). The testing order was selected randomly. The subjects were asked to maintain the push-up position with straight knees, hips, and trunk for 5 seconds at each elbow angle. The mean root mean square (RMS) of EMG activity was calculated. EMG activity was normalized using the maximum voluntary isometric contractιn elicited using a manual muscle testing technique. Two-factor repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare the average RMS value of EMG activity for each condition. The EMG activity for the pectoralis major, and internal and external oblique muscles during a push-up on a sling was significantly higher than on a fixed support at all angles of elbow flexion (p<.01). There were significant differences in the EMG activity of the pectoralis major and triceps brachii muscles at difference angles of elbow flexion (p<.05). The pectoralis major muscle had the highest EMG activity at 90 degrees of elbow flexion on both the sling and fixed support. The triceps brachii muscle had the highest EMG activity at 45 degrees of elbow flexion on both the sling and fixed support. The internal and external oblique muscles had the highest EMG activity at 0 degrees of elbow flexion, although the difference with angle of flexion was not significant. These results suggest that to improve proximal and trunk stability and muscle strength, push-ups are more useful when performed on a suspension sling than On a fixed support.

  • Semiotics is an external expression for show-ing internal meaning, and the signs express the internal meaning. The architects and the designers are very similar each other in using semiotics for expressing their desires. Histori-cally, the design similarity exists between the architecture and the fashion. In this study, the fashion designs are interpreted by using semiotics of architectural design, especially emphasizing external expression methods for representing internal desires. To express the human body's character-istics, the volume, weight support, structural simplicity, controllability and beauty of fashion were used for the fashion designs, and those characters could be found at the architec-tural patterns. Balenciaga's fashion emphasized the volume, the weigh support, the structural simplicity and the controllability, while Roberto Capucci rejected the approach of using women's body curves, but used the volume and simplicity of natures in addition to Balenciaga's heavy weight design patterns. The control and the modern dedication were used to make the simple patterns by Courreges, and then brought the Modernism to the fashion. Courreges used the cutting characters to func-tional design for expressing the structural sim-plicity.
