  • The purpose of this study is to apply cathodic protection to reinforced concrete structure and provide fundamental data to prevent the corrosion. The theory of cathodic protection of steel in concrete is to apply sufficient direct current so that corroding anodes on the steel are prevented from discharging ions. Two methods are used to supply the external current. In one, the protected metal is the cathode by connecting it to a more active metal. In the second, an external direct current power source supplies the current. The first is the sacrificial-anode system and the second the impressed-current system. The study results showed that the corrosion of the reinforcing steel in concrete could be enormously decreased by using protective current. The sacrificial anode and concrete nave to be adhered closely each in order to prevent the corrosion of reinforcing steel.

  • Large steel water pipes are joined prevalently by the bell end method, and are welded both at inside and outside of lapped parts. In practice, welded joints of water pipes are very critical, because in most cases failure of pipes causing leakage occurs at the welded joint. Therefore some methods have been developed to ensure the soundness of welded joints of water pipes, like leakage tests and nondestructive tests (NDTs). But one of the major characteristics that affects the soundness of welded Joints is the stress distribution caused by welding and external forces. Some studies have been carried out on the residual stress of steel water popes, but complex stress distributions by welding and external forces are rarely studied. In this study, temperature and stress distributions in steel water pipes produced by welding are predicted by a three-dimensional finite element method(FEM). Also, stress values are measured from real steel water pipes by the hole-drilling methods, and compared with predicted ones. The influence of some typical post weld treatments on residual stress distribution was also investigated by residual stress measurements.

  • Traditional external post-tensioning method using either steel bars or tendons is commonly used as a retrofitting method for concrete bridges. However, the external post-tensioning method has some disadvantages such as stress concentration at anchorages and inefficient load carrying capability regarding live loads. Thermal prestressing method is a newly proposed method for strengthening and rehabilitation of concrete girder bridges. Founded on a simple concept of thermal expansion and contraction of steel, the method is a hybrid method of external post-tensioning and steel plate bonding, combining the merits of two methods. In this paper, basic concepts of the method are presented and an illustrative experiment is introduced. From actual experimental data, the thermal prestressing effect is substantiated and the FEM approach for its analysis is verified.

  • The effect of dewpoints on annealing behavior and coating characteristics such as wettability and galvannealing kinetics was studied by annealing 0.3wt%Si - 0.1~0.4wt% Mn added interstitial-free high strength steels(IF-HSS). The 0.3wt%Si-0.1wt%Mn steel exhibited good wettability with molten zinc and galvannealing kinetics after annealing when the dewpoint of $H_2-N_2$ mixed gas was above $-20^{\circ}C$. It is shown that the wettability and galvannealing kinetics are directly related to the coverage of the external(surface) oxide formed by selective oxidation during annealing. At $N_2-15%H_2$ annealing atmosphere, the increase of dewpoint results in a gradual transition from external to internal selective oxidation. The decrease of external oxidation of alloying elements with a concurrent increase of their subsurface enrichment in the substrate, showing a larger surface area that was free of oxide particles, contributed to the improved wettability and galvannealing kinetics. On the other hand, the corresponding wettability and galvannealing kinetics were deteriorated with the dewpoints below $-20^{\circ}C$. The continuous oxide layer of network and/or film type was formed on the steel surface, leading to the poor wettability and galvannealing kinetics. It causes a high contact angle between annealed surface and molten zinc and plays an interrupting role in interdiffusion of Zn and Fe during galvannealing process.

  • In this study, the endochronic theory was used to investigate the collapse of thick-walled tubes subjected to external pressure and axial tension. The experimental and theoretical findings of Madhavan et al. (1993) for thick-walled tubes of 304 stainless steel subjected to external pressure and axial tension were compared with the endochronic simulation. Collapse envelopes for various diameter-to-thickness tubes under two different pressure-tension loadings were involved. It has been shown that the experimental results were aptly described by the endochronic approach demonstrated from comparison with the theoretical prediction employed by Madhavan et al. (1993). Furthermore, by using the rate-sensitivity function of the intrinsic time measure proposed by Pan and Chern (1997) in the endochronic theory, our theoretical analysis was extended to investigate the viscoplastic collapse of thick-walled tubes subjected to external pressure and axial tension. It was found that the pressure-tension collapse envelopes are strongly influenced by the strain-rate during axial tension. Due to the hardening of the metal tube of 304 stainless steel under a faster strain-rate during uniaxial tension, the size of the tension-collapse envelope increases.

  • The need for rehabilitation of the existing bridges is a growing concern in many countries and has been emphasized in various research reports and publications. Many bridges constructed between 1960s and 1970s in Korea were designed for relatively light traffic volumes, speeds and the weight, thus they are inadequate for the present traffic conditions. This together with some design deficiencies, has resulted in deficiencies of various degrees of many bridges. One strengthening method which has significant advantages is the application of external post-tensioning tendons. This paper presents an example of three span continuous composite bridge strenghtened by application of external post-tensioning.

  • The major objective of this study is to investigate the effects and application of reinforcement for steel plate girder railway bridge by the external prestressing method. It analyzed the mechanical behaviors of non-ballasted railway bridge with ballast reinforced and external post-tensioning reinforced on the finite clement analysis for the static and dynamic behavior. As a result, the reinforcement of ballasted railway bridge the external prestressing method are obviously effective for the additional dead force which is ballast. The analytical study are carried out to investigate the post-tension force decrease bending behavior and deflection in composite bridge for serviceability. To develop two type FEM model which reflect well the post-tension force transverse distribution behavior of servicing bridge. With the comparing the results of railway bridge with ballast which carried out before the post-tensioning with the results of railway bridge with ballast which carried out after post-tensioning, It is investigated that the additional dead load decrease effect and bending behavior of servicing bridge is effect by the post-tensioning. The reinforcement by using the external tendon can be reducing that structure of a degradation phenomenon by unusual stresses due to additional dead load and other problems.

  • This paper presents finite element (FE) analyses to clarify the effects of external pressure on the residual stresses in a girth-welded steel pipe. At first, FE simulation of the girth welding process is carried out to obtain the weld-induced residual stresses employing sequentially coupled three-dimensional (3-D) thermo-mechanical FE formulation. Then, 3-D elastic-plastic FE analyses incorporating the residual stresses and plastic strains obtained from the preceding FE simulation are performed to investigate the residual stress behavior in the girth-welded pipe under external pressure. The FE analysis results show that the hoop compressive stresses induced by the external pressure significantly alter the hoop residual stresses in the course of the mechanical loading.

  • The present study applied the external post tensioning reinforcement method for reinforcing a non-ballast steel plate girder railway bridge, and the effects of the strength of tendons and the level of post-tensioning force on the dynamic behavior are experimented and analyzed. According to the results of this study, the natural frequency was increased by the strength of tendons but it was decreased by the rise of post-tensioning force and as a consequence the introduction of post-tensioning force decreased natural frequency slightly. It was analyzed that further study is need to establish the exact relations between post-tensioning force and natural frequency. In addition, it was found that the dynamic displacement, dynamic bending stress and vertical acceleration were decreased by the external post-tensioning. On the other hand, external post-tensioning increased horizontal acceleration by up to 20%, which was around 70% of vertical acceleration. This needs further study.
