Early investigations focused mainly on manipulating the confinement effect to develop a reinforced concrete column with lateral hoops. Based on this legacy model, Li's model incorporated the additional confinement effect of a steel jacket. However, recent experiments on plain concrete cylinders with steel jackets revealed relatively large discrepancies in the estimates of strength enhancement and the post-peak behavior. Here, we describe a modified constitutive law for confined concrete with an unbonded external steel jacket in terms of three regions for the loading stage. We used a two-phase heterogeneous concrete model to simulate the uniaxial compression test of a $150mm{\times}300mm$ concrete cylinder with three thicknesses of steel jackets: 1.0 mm, 1.5 mm, and 2.0 mm. The proposed constitutive model was verified by a series of finite element analyses using a finite element program. The damaged plasticity model and extended Drucker-Prager model were applied and compared in terms of the level of pressure sensitivity for confinement in 3D. The proposed model yielded results that were in close agreement with the experimental results.
This paper provides the results of an experimental and analytical study performed on the beam to Concrete Filled Circular Steel Column connections with the external stiffener rings under the gravity loads. Specimens are modeled as a 1/4 scale of the beam-columns as gravity loads are applied to a multi-story frame. Important parameters in this study are the width of the external rings, the diameter-thickness ratios of column and whether or not the external rings are welded to the circular column. A total of 20 specimens are tested to clarify the structural behavior of the CFT column connections with the external stiffener rings. The test results are summarized for the yield and maximum strength and stiffness. The existing design equations for the allowable and yield load capacities are referred to verify the structural characteristics for the connections.
The research study is focuses on a form of all-bolted joint with the external ring stiffening plate in the prefabricated steel structure. The components are bolted at site after being fabricated in the factory. Six specimens were tested under cyclic loading, and the effects of column axial compression ratio, concrete-filled column, beam flange sub plate, beam web angle cleats, and spliced column on the failure mode, hysteretic behavior and ductility of the joints were analyzed. The results shown that the proposed all-bolted joint with external ring stiffening plate performed high bearing capability, stable inflexibility degradation, high ductility and plump hysteretic curve. The primary failure modes were bucking at beam end, cracking at the variable section of the external ring stiffening plate, and finally welds fracturing between external ring stiffening plate and column wall. The bearing capability of the joints reduced with the axial compression ratio increased. The use of concrete-filled steel tube column can increase the bearing capability of joints. The existence of the beam flange sub plate, and beam web angle cleat improves the energy dissipation, ductility, bearing capacity and original rigidity of the joint, but also increase the stress concentration at the variable section of the external reinforcing ring plate. The proposed joints with spliced column also performed desirable integrity, large bearing capacity, initial stiffness and energy dissipation capacity for engineering application by reasonable design.

With the steady increase in the annual number of earthquakes in South Korea, the need to apply seismic reinforcement on public facilities has recently increased. To reinforce seismic capacity, spaced full-column-height steel bars are attached to column faces. In this study, nonlinear finite element analysis was conducted to analyze the effect of external reinforcement steel bars on the seismic capacity of RC columns with a square or rectangular cross-section. For verification, the analysis results were compared with test results. Results showed that the finite element analysis reasonably predicted the actual structural behavior of RC columns with steel bars. In addition, both the analysis and the test results showed that the failure mode was converted from brittle failure to ductile fracture, owing to the external reinforcement steel bars. Both loading capacity and ductility were increased as well. Therefore, the external reinforcement steel bar can effectively enhance the seismic capacity of existing RC columns. This study is expected to contribute to relevant research areas such as the development of design methods.

The purpose of this study was to propose a new steel jacketing method that does not require a grout between steel and concrete and to compare its structure performance with that of the others jacketed concrete. The proposed steel jacketing method uses external pressures on steel jackets to attach it to the surface of concrete.

This paper presents the details of a novel external prestressing technique for strengthening of concrete members. In the proposed technique, transfer of external force is in shear mode on the end block thus creating a complex stress distribution and the required transverse prestressing force is lesser compared to conventional techniques. Steel brackets are provided on either side of the end block for transferring external prestressing force and these are connected to the anchor blocks by expansion type anchor bolts. In order to validate the technique, an experimental investigation has been carried out on post-tensioned end blocks. Performance of the end blocks have been studied for design, cracking and ultimate loads. Slip and slope of steel bracket have been recorded at various stages during the experiment. Finite element analysis has been carried out by simulating the test conditions and the responses have been compared. From the analysis, it has been observed that the computed slope and slip of the steel bracket are in good agreement with the corresponding experimental observations. A simplified analytical model has been proposed to compute load-deformation of the loaded steel bracket with respect to the end block. Yield and ultimate loads have been arrived at based on force/moment equilibrium equations at critical sections. Deformation analysis has been carried out based on the assumption that the ratio of axial deformation to vertical deformation of anchor bolt would follow the same ratio at the corresponding forces such as yield and ultimate. It is observed that the computed forces, slip and slopes are in good agreement with the corresponding experimental observations.
Existing tubes for concrete filled tubular structure are made through welding of four plates irrespective, but the production performance is poor and special welding technique is needed to weld the internal or through diaphragm. Accordingly, We developed a welded built-up square steel tube having a welding lines and a stiffeners at location out of stress concentration. The welded built-up square steel tube occurred a interference with stiffeners at the internal or through diaphragm, therefore researches of a external diaphragm for welded built-up square CFT column connections are needed for the purpose of avoidance of a interfere with stiffeners. In this study we suggest a design formulation for external diaphragm of the welded built-up square CFT external diaphragm connections. Four specimens were manufactured for a experimental test, then we analyzed the behaviors of the specimens.

This study is focused on the welding performance of automatic gas pressure welding machine adapted to korean construction site by external appearance investigation. As gas pressure welding is more economical and has good performances compared with other steel bar jointing methods, as arc welding and mechanical joint etc, in Japan, the gas pressure welding is one of the typical connection of steel reinforcement when connecting the D29 and thicker steel bars, But in Korea, gas pressure welding joint method is not widely used caused by the shortage of skilled workers. so to activate the gas pressure welding in Korea, the automatic gas pressure welding machine is developed. In this study, the welding performances of gas pressure welding joint samples using korean automatic gas pressure welding machine are measured by external appearance investigation - blown diameters, blown length, welding face disagreement, central axis eccentric ratio, bending, sag and crack. The results of welding performances on the gas pressure welding joint samples show that samples are satisfied with the standard value regulated in KS D 0244 and JIS Z 3120.
A method of reinforcement using external tendons has been found to be one of the effective techniques of reinforcement and its application is increasing. In this paper, the method to calculate the initial tendon force is proposed for the improvement of load-carrying capacity in existing steel-concrete composite bridges. An equation for the increment of tendon force was derived for tendon configurations and live load types, and the effect of reinforcement in a composite beam was numerically studied. The method to calculate the number of tendon and initial tendon force was presented by proposing the new method to calculate the rating factor, which considers the increment of tendon force. The method was shown to be effective for an existing steel-concrete bridge.
Resisting strength of ring-stiffened cylindrical steel shell under uniform external pressure was evaluated by geometrically and materially nonlinear finite element method. The effects of shape and amplitude of geometric initial imperfection, radius to thickness ratio, and spacing of ring stiffeners on the resisting strength of ring-stiffened shell were analyzed. The resisting strength of ring-stiffened cylindrical shells made of SM490 obtained by FEA were compared with design strengths specified in Eurocode 3 and DNV-RP-C202. The shell buckling modes obtained from a linear elastic bifurcation FE analysis were introduced in the nonlinear FE analysis as initial geometric imperfections. The radius to thickness ratios of cylindrical shell in the range of 250 to 500 were considered.
