  • The present study is to compare the performance of turbulence models in the analysis of the complex flowfield of an axial flow compressor. Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model and k-$\omega$ turbulence model were selected for the comparison. The thin-layer Wavier-Stokes equation was calculated by explicit, finite-difference numerical scheme. A spatially-varying time-step and an implicit residual smoothing were used to improve convergence. Experimental measurements for NASA rotor 37 were cited fer the comparison with numerical data. The compared two turbulence models gave similar performance over all except for total pressure.

  • Some strong convergence theorems of explicit iteration scheme for asymptotically nonexpansive semi-groups in Banach spaces are established. The results presented in this paper extend and improve some recent results in [T. Suzuki. On strong convergence to common fixed points of nonexpansive semigroups in Hilbert spaces, Proc. Amer. Math. • Numerical optimization techniques combined with a three-dimensional thin-layer Navier-Stokes solver are presented to find an optimum shape of a stator blade in an axial compressor through calculations of single stage rotor-stator flow. Governing differential equations are discretized using an explicit finite difference method and solved by a multi-stage Runge-Kutta scheme. Baldwin-Lomax model is chosen to describe turbulence. A spatially-varying time-step and an implicit residual smoothing are used to accelerate convergence. A steady mixing approach is used to pass information between stator and rotor blades. For numerical optimization, searching direction is found by the steepest decent and conjugate direction methods, and the golden section method is used to determine optimum moving distance along the searching direction. The object of present optimization is to maximize efficiency. An optimum stacking line is found to design a custom-tailored 3-dimensional blade for maximum efficiency with the other parameters fixed.

  • In this study, finite element analysis for multi-stage deep drawing process of rectangular configuration with extreme aspect ratio is carried out especially for the blank design. The analysis of rectangular deep drawing process with extreme aspect ratio is likewise very difficult with respect to the design process parameters including the intermediate die profile. In order to solve the difficulties, numerical approach using finite element method is performed in the present analysis and design. A series of experiments for multi-stage rectangular deep drawing process are conducted and the deformed configuration is investigated by comparing with the results of the finite element analysis. Additionally, to minimize amount of removal material after trimming process, finite element simulation is applied for the blank modification. The analysis incorporates brick elements for a rigid-plastic finite element method with an explicit time integration scheme using LS-DYNA3D.

  • The numerical simulation of a two-phase flow In a discrete fracture network model is presented in this paper, The purpose of this work is to consider density-driven flows induced by the density difference between hot autochthonous heavy brines and injected cold water. Mechanical consequences of high pressure waves on the fracture permeability and heat exchanges between fluids and rock matrix are neglected in this study. The finite volume method is employed to discretize spatially and the system is solved by using an IMPES(Implicit Pressure-Explicit Saturation) scheme. In order to solve the strong non-linearity of the system, the Newton-Raphson algorithm is used. The well-known Buckeley-Leverett problem is adapted to validate results calculated from the model and a relatively good agreement is obtained.

  • This paper describes the development of the stream-tube based dispersion model for modeling contaminant transport in open channels. The operator-splitting technique is employed to separate the 2D contaminant transport equation into the pure advection and pure dispersion equations. Then the total variation diminishing (TVD) schemes are combined with the second-order Lax-Wendroff and third-order QUICKEST explicit finite difference schemes respectively to solve the pure advection equation in order to prevent the occurrence of numerical oscillations. Due to various limiters owning different features, the numerical tests for 1D pure advection and 2D dispersion are conducted to evaluate the performance of different TVD schemes firstly, then the TVD schemes are applied to experimental data for simulating the 2D mixing in a straight trapezoidal channel to test the model capability. Both the numerical tests and model application show that the TVD schemes are very competent for solving the advection-dominated transport problems.

  • This study describes the application of a two dimensional depth integrated numerical model. The explict scheme of finite difference method had been applied to the model of circulation. The nonlinear terms showed a slight difference for the variations of water elevation when calculated grid was small. They were also found to be minor when calculated grid size was increased. For verification of the numerical model, numerical results were compared with predicted values and field data. In the model, the effect of nonlinear advective terms proved not to be significant.

  • Today, rapid evolution of Internet makes various types of services in ubiquitous environment are intelligent and active. As a result, user's demand on high quality of life increases and health care service based on ubiquitous environment draws a lot of attention. However, user's private information used for health care service is illegally distributed and exposed, causing serious individual and social problems. Therefore, this thesis is intended to suggest a secure health care service to prevent unauthorized third party's access and to protect user's privacy in health care systems. The proposed scheme establishes a session key through communication channel between health care system and user based on explicit mutual authentication and provides secure communication and access control, improving security as one of the leading health care systems.

  • The growth of a spherical vapor bubble contained in a large body of upper convected Maxwell fluid is theoretically analyzed under the devolatilization condition of polymer by using a Galerkin FEM in the Lagrangian frame. Using the finite element technique, a fully explicit numerical scheme is developed both for the calculation of pressure distribution and for the tracking of bubble surface. Oscillatory behavior in bubble radius is observed during growth and the oscillatory behavior is found to be due to the interaction of mass transfer resistance and elasticity. It is found that the elasticity of fluid accelerates the growth and removal of volatile component. It is also found that the bubble growth in the devolatilization of polymers is affected by both mass transfer resistance and viscoelasticity of fluids.

  • A partly implicit/quasi-explicit method is introduced for the solution of detailed chemical kinetics with stiff source terms based on the standard fourth-order Runge-Kutta scheme. Present method solves implicitly only the stiff reaction rate equations, whereas the others explicitly. The stiff equations are selected based on the survey of the chemical Jaconian matrix and its Eigenvalues. As an application of the present method constant pressure combustion was analyzed by a detailed mechanism of hydrogen-air combustion with NOx chemistry. The sensitivity analysis reveals that only the 4 species in NOx chemistry has strong stiffness and should be solved implicitly among the 13 species. The implicit solution of the 4 species successfully predicts the entire process with same accuracy and efficiency at half the price.
