Numerical analyses are carried out to evaluate the cumulative impact damage of an automotive front end bumper under the low speed crash events(CMVSS215) by using explicit code. Results of first impact simulation, which are deformed shape, thickness, stress tensors and strain tensors, are used as the initial conditions for a next impact simulation. Between the events, the residual vibration is damped out by using nodal damping, and then recovery after each event is evaluated by several methods, one of which is a springback analysis with implicite finite element analysis code. The coupled analysis scheme for the evaluation of cumulative impact damage is verified through the comparison with test results.
In case of aircraft impact on nuclear containment structures, the initial kinetic energy of the aircraft is transferred and absorbed by the outer containment, may causing either complete or partial failure of containment structure. In the present study safety analysis of BWR Mark III type containment has been performed. The total height of containment is 67 m. It has a circular wall with monolithic dome of 21m diameter. Crash analysis has been performed for fighter jet Phantom F4. A normal hit at the crown of containment dome has been considered. Numerical simulations have been carried out using finite element code ABAQUS/Explicit. Concrete Damage Plasticity model have been incorporated to simulate the behaviour of concrete at high strain rate, while Johnson-Cook elasto-visco model of ductile metals have been used for steel reinforcement. Maximum deformation in the containment building has reported as 33.35 mm against crash of Phantom F4. Deformations in concrete and reinforcements have been localised to the impact region. Moreover, no significant global damage has been observed in structure. It may be concluded from the present study that at higher velocity of aircraft perforation of the structure may happen.
This study is concerned with the braking distance estimation using frictional energy rate. First, steady state rolling analysis is performed, and using this result, the braking distance is estimated. Dynamic rolling analysis during entire braking time period is impratical, so that this study divides the vehicle velocity by 10km/h to reduce the analysis time. The multiplication of the slip rate and the shear stress provides the frictional energy rate. Using frictional energy rate, total braking distance is estimated, In addition, ABS(Anti-lock Brake System) is considered, and two type of slip ratios are compared, One is 15% slip ratio for the ABS condition, and the other is 100% slip ratio which leads lo the almost same braking distance as the elementary kinematic theory. A slip ratio is controlled by angular velocity in ABAQUS/Explicit, A 15% slip ratio gives the real vehicle's braking distance when the frictional energy occurred al disk pad is included. Disk pad's frictional energy rate is calculated by the theoretical approach.

In this study, a square rounding sidewalk block frame was developed considering the simplicity of construction and the superiority of aesthetics. In addition, it is possible to prevent damage, deformation, and settlement of adjacent sidewalk blocks due to plastic deformation during car impact load of installed bollad. A non-linear structural analysis was performed through finite element analysis to examine the performance of a car crash to which this was applied. Structural safety was confirmed through car crash simulation according to the direction of impact, and it is estimated that the function can be restored by replacing some parts in case of damage due to impact.
In the present study, the effect of geometrical parameters of two different types of aluminum thin-walled structures on energy absorption under three-bending impact loading has been investigated experimentally and numerically. To evaluate the effect of parameters on the specific energy absorption (SEA), initial peak crushing force (IPCF), and the maximum crushing distance (δ), a design of experiment technique (DOE) with response surface method (RSM) was applied. Four different thin-walled structures have been tested under the low-velocity impact, and then they have simulated by ABAQUS software. An acceptable consistency between the numerical and experimental results was obtained. In this study, statistical analysis has been performed on various parameters of three different types of tubes. In the first and the second statistical analysis, the dimensional parameters of the cross-section, the number of holes, and the dimensional parameter of holes were considered as the design variables. The diameter reduction rate and the number of sections with different diameters are related to the third statistical analysis. All design points of the statistical method have been simulated by the finite element package, ABAQUS/Explicit. The final result shows that the height and thickness of tubes were more effective than other geometrical parameters, and despite the fact that the deformations of the cylindrical tubes were around forty percent greater than the rectangular tubes, the top desirability was relevant to the cylindrical tubes with reduced cross-sections.

This study reports a series of drop impact tests performed to generate denting damages on stiffened plates and their residual ultimate strength tests under axial compression. The models were fabricated of general structural steel, and each model has six longitudinal stiffeners and two transverse frames. Among six fabricated models, four were damaged, and two were left intact for reference. To investigate the effects of collision velocity and impact location on the extent of damage, the drop height and the impact location were changed in each impact test. After performing the collision tests, the ultimate axial compression tests were conducted to investigate the residual strengths of the damaged stiffened plates. Finite element analyses were also carried out using a commercial package Abaqus/Explicit. The material properties obtained from a quasi-static tensile tests were used, and the strain-rate sensitivity was considered. After importing the collision simulation results, the ultimate strength calculations were carried out and their results were compared with the test data for the validation of the finite element analysis method.

Due to increasing legal and market demands for safety in the automotive design process, the design of integrated seat is important more and mote because it should satisfy the conflict between stronger and lower weight for safety and environmental demands. In this study for crash simulations, the numerical simulations have been carried out using the explicit finite element program LS-Dyna according to the FMVSS 210 standard for safety test of seat. Since crash simulations are very time-consuming and a series of simulations that does not lead to a better result is very costly, the optimization method must be both efficient and reliable. As a result of that, statistical approaches such as design of experiments and response surface model have been successfully implemented to reduce time-consuming LS-Dyna simulations and optimize the safety and environmental demands together with nonlinear optimization algorithm. Design of experiments is used lot exploring the design space of maximum displacement and total weight and for building response surface models in order to minimize the maximum displacement and total weight of integrated seat.
The analysis of structure response and design of buried structures subjected to dynamic destructive loads have been receiving increasing interest due to recent severe damage caused by strong earthquakes and terrorist attacks. For a comprehensive design of buried structures subjected to blast loads to be conducted, the whole system behaviour including simulation of the explosion, propagation of shock waves through the soil medium, the interaction of the soil with the buried structure and the structure response needs to be simulated in a single model. Such a model will enable more realistic simulation of the fundamental physical behaviour. This paper presents a complete model simulating the whole system using the finite element package ABAQUS/Explicit. The Arbitrary Lagrange Euler Coupling formulation is used to model the explosive charge and the soil region near the explosion to eliminate the distortion of the mesh under high deformation, while the conventional finite element method is used to model the rest of the system. The elasto-plastic Drucker-Prager Cap model is used to model the soil behaviour. The explosion process is simulated using the Jones-Wilkens-Lee equation of state. The Concrete Damage Plasticity model is used to simulate the behaviour of concrete with the reinforcement considered as an elasto-plastic material. The contact interface between soil and structure is simulated using the general Mohr-Coulomb friction concept, which allows for sliding, separation and rebound between the buried structure surface and the surrounding soil. The behaviour of the whole system is evaluated using a numerical example which shows that the proposed model is capable of producing a realistic simulation of the physical system behaviour in a smooth numerical process.

In this paper, the low velocity impact characteristics of filament winding CFRP pressure vessel was investigated using numerical and experimental methods. The cylinder part of CFRP vessel was impacted using triangular shape impactor which simulated the sharp edge of dropping tools and impact response behavior of CFRP was reviewed. The mechanical behavior, such as deformation and stress distribution, were also predicted by explicit finite element method and the validity of the model was investigated. For the quantitative evaluation of the residual strength of the pressure vessel after impact, a series of the ring specimens was cut from the impacted vessel and its burst pressure was measured by hydraulic pressure hoop tension test. As the results, the relationship between the residual strength degradation and the impact energy was successively obtained and a useful methodology to evaluate quantitatively the impact damage tolerance of CFRP pressure vessel was established.

The 3-D FEM analysis for simulating the stamping operation of planar anisotropic sheet metals with arbitrarily-shaped tools is introduced. An implicit, incremental, updated Lagrangian formulation with a rigid-viscoplastic constitutive equation is employed. Contact and friction are considered through the mesh-normal, which compatibly describes arbitrary tool surfaces and FEM meshes without depending on the explicit spatial derivatives of tool surfaces. The consistent full set of governing relations, comprising equilibrium equation and mesh-normal geometric constraints, is appropriately linearized. The linear triangular elements are used for depicting the formed sheet, based on membrane approximation. Barlat's non-quadratic anisotropic yield criterion(strain-rate potential) is employed, whose in-plane anisotropic properties are taken into account with anisotropic coefficients and non-quadratic function parameter. The planar anisotropic finite element formulation is tested with the numerical simulations of the stamping of an automotive hood inner panel and the drawing of a hemispherical punch. The in-plane anisotropic effects on the formability of both mild steel and aluminum alloy sheet metals are examined.
