The Combined Effects of Metalinguistic Explanation and Self-Correction on Improving EFL Writing Accuracy

  • This study examined whether self-correction or metalinguistic explanation might make a difference in the ability to accurately write two English grammatical structures when learners received indirect teacher feedback in the form of underlining target errors in a Korean EFL college classroom. With the goal of helping low-proficiency students improve their ability to accurately write sentences including nonfinite present participial relative clauses and present participial constructions, four groups were formed: a group which received indirect feedback, a group which received indirect feedback and metalinguistic explanation, a group which received indirect feedback and self-corrected errors, and a group which received indirect feedback and self-corrected errors after receiving metalinguistic explanation. The results showed that the effects of either metalinguistic explanation or self-correction integrated with indirect feedback on learners' ability to accurately write the target structures were not meaningful, while the combined effects of metalinguistic explanation and self-correction were statistically significant.

촉진질문 제공과 자기설명 지시가 기억과 이해에 미치는 영향: 인지욕구와의 상호작용 (Effects of Giving Prompts and Asking for Self-Explanation Depend on the Students' Need for Cognition)

  • 촉진질문을 제공해서 무엇을 설명해야 하는지 알려주거나 자기설명을 하게 지시하면 기억과 이해가 향상되는지, 그리고 자기설명 지시와 촉진질문 제공의 효과가 학습자의 인지욕구와 상호작용하는지 알아보기 위해 3요인 실험을 실시하였다. 촉진질문과 자기설명 지시의 효과는 과제와 학습자의 인지욕구 수준에 따라 다르게 나타났다. 기억검사에서는 인지욕구가 낮은 학습자에게서 자기설명 지시와 질문 제공이 기억 수행을 향상시켰다. 인지욕구가 높은 학습자에게는 촉진질문이나 자기 설명지시는 기억에 별 도움이 되지 않았다. 오히려 촉진질문에서 언급하지 않았던 항목에 대한 기억은 저하시키는 경향을 보여주었다. 그러나 이해검사에서는 인지욕구가 높은 학습자의 이해 수행이 좋았다. 특히 인지욕구가 높은 학습자에게 촉진질문을 제공하고 자기설명을 하게 지시한 경우에는 이해 수행이 좋았으나, 인지욕구가 높은 학습자에게 촉진질문을 제공하지 않고 자기설명을 하게 한 경우에는 이해 수행이 나빴다. 이 연구의 결과는 자기설명 지시와 촉진문의 효과는 학습자의 인지욕구 수준에 따라 다를 수 있고, 인지욕구 수준이 낮은 경우 자기설명 지시와 촉진질문의 효과는 가산적일 수 있으며, 설명이 필요한 부분을 정확하게 찾아내는 것이 자기설명의 효과를 결정하는 중요한 요인일 수 있다는 것을 시사하는 것으로 해석되었다.

설명 단계를 강조한 POE 과학수업이 초등학생들에게 미치는 효과 (The Effects of POE Science Class Emphasizing Explanation Phase on Elementary School Students)

  • The purpose of this study was to see the influences of POE science class that emphasizes explanation on science research ability, motivation of science class as well as scientific attitude of elementary students. The results drawn from this analysis were as below. Firstly, positive relationship was found between science research ability and POE science class was shown among research group. This shows that science research ability was improved as POE science class encouraged the research activities of students. It indicates that POE science class emphasizing explanation is effective in improving science research ability of students. Secondly, positive relationship was found between motivation of science class and POE science class among research group and this means that POE science class that emphasizes explanation stimulates intellectual curiosity of students and improves their attitude by actively promoting research activities. Thirdly, there was a positive relationship between scientific attitude and POE science class among research group. This presents that POE science class emphasizing explanation is effective in improving students' attitude toward science by promoting research activities. Above results show that POE science class emphasizing explanation is highly effective for elementary students. It is considered that scientific writing, discussion and debate classes have positive influences on research ability, motivation of science class and scientific attitude of elementary students. Thus, it is needed to apply POE science class to current science class as it can promote wider scientific activities among students.

PCK 설계수업이 초등학교 과학교과 학습부진아의 학업성취 및 학업적 자기효능감에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of Pedagogical Content Knowledge Instruction in Elementary Science on Academic Achievement and Self-Efficacy for Underachievers of Science)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of PCK designed instruction on academic achievement and self-efficacy for underachievers in science of elementary school. The hypotheses were as follows: First, PCK designed science instruction would improve academic achievement of the children. Second, PCK designed science instruction would improve academic self- efficacy of the children. The subject was 14 students of forth graders of elementary school who are underachievers in science class. For group composition, self efficacy test and science achievement test were conducted and they were divided into experimental group and control group. Each group has 7 participants. A total of 16 sessions were conducted for 8 weeks, twice per week, with experimental group were taught PCK designed classes while control group were taught teacher-led explanation type class. The result of statistical analyses were as follows: First, the experimental group in PCK designed class showed more improvement on academic achievement than the control group in the teacher-led explanation type class. Second, the experimental group in PCK designed class showed more improvement on self efficacy than the control group in the teacher-led explanation type class.

The Effects of Different Types of Form-Focused Instruction on Korean University Students' Writing Accuracy

  • The present study investigated what combination of three form-focused options - explicit explanation, production practice, and corrective feedback - may be effective in helping low-proficiency learners improve accuracy in communicative writing. The subjects were 34 Korean university students enrolled in 'Business English 1' and the study lasted 11 weeks. The relative clause structure was selected as the target structure. The study found that the combination of explicit explanation, sentence-level production practice, communicative writing practice, and recasts had a significantly greater effect on improved accuracy than the combination of communicative writing practice and recasts and that of explicit explanation, communicative writing practice, and recasts. Because the second and third combinations didn't lead to significantly improved accuracy, it can be concluded that of the form-focused options forming the first combination sentence-level production practice made a decisive contribution to the significant increase in accuracy. It also found that the provision of self-correcting opportunities before providing recasts on errors committed in sentence-level production practice resulted in significantly greater accuracy in communicative writing than the provision of recasts alone on them. The results of the study suggest that we should make low-proficiency Korean learners have sentence-level production practice which is intensive and focused and make them self-correct targeted errors before providing them with narrowly focused recasts in order to help them to improve writing accuracy.

의료서비스에서 고객지향요인이 서비스가치와 고객만족에 미치는 영향 (A Study on Effects of Customer Orientation Factors in Relation to Medical Services on the Values of the Services and Customer Satisfaction)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of customer orientation factors in relation to medical services on the values of the service and customer satisfaction and loyalty. Those factors include patient safety and, as found by previous studies, specialization, explanation of what to be medically examined and customer orientation itself. Based on these pervious studies, this study surveyed customers of 7 general hospitals located in Busan to empirically identify relations between customer orientation factors of medical services and the values of the services and customer satisfaction. Results of the study can be summarized as follows. First, this study is very meaningful in that it established a basic theory of patient safety as one of the above customer orientation factors, and tried to empirically demonstrated the theory by applying it to medical services. Second, another of the factors, specialization was found positively affecting the values of medical services, but not affecting customer satisfaction. Customers are likely to choose specialized medical institutions even at higher cost when they undergo an accident or disease. Nevertheless, in factors, whether medical service providers are specialized is not influencing customer satisfaction. This is because medical institutions are failing to properly make recognized their specialization to customers who want to receive specialized medical services. Third, another of customer orientation factors, that is, explanation of what to be medically examined was found not having positive effects on the values of medical services and customer satisfaction. This is probably because enough time was not given for the explanation or because the explanation itself was not provided enough. Fourth, medical service providers' customer orientation was found positively influencing the values of medical services and customer satisfaction. In other words, it seems that customer-centered attitudes and behaviors of medical service providers had positive effects on customers' perception of medical services. Fifth, another of the factors, that is, patient safety was found positively affecting the values of medical services and customer satisfaction. This is probably because medical services' accurate diagnoses and reliable services had positive effects on customers' perception of medical services. Sixth, customers' perceived values of medical services were found having positive effects on customer satisfaction and loyalty. This suggests that the values of medical services are an antecedent variable that directly influences customer satisfaction and loyalty. Seventh, customer satisfaction was found positively affecting customer loyalty. This suggests that customer satisfaction is an antecedent variable of customer loyalty. In conclusion, this study showed that in relation to medical services, customer orientation factors' significant influences on the values of the services and customer satisfaction requires continuous efforts for raising customers' perceived qualities of medical services.

일반 화학 수업에서 설명적 피드백을 이용한 개념도 학습의 효과 (The Effects of Concept Mapping with Explanation Feedback in the Undergraduate General Chemistry Course)

  • In this study, the effects of concept mapping with feedbacks providing explanatory comments on students' achievement, science learning anxiety, and science learning motivation were investigated in the undergraduate general chemistry course. The aptitude-treatment interactions between students' level of mastery goal orientation and the concept mapping with explanation feedback treatment were also examined. Sixty-seven freshmen from an university of education were assigned to a control group and a treatment group. The tests of mastery goal orientation, science anxiety, and science learning motivation were administered as pretests. For the treatment group, feedback providing students with explanatory comments through whole class discussion was presented after each concept mapping. Whereas the control group students were presented with opportunities solving excercise problems followed by explanation feedback. The intervention was lasted for 10 weeks (30 class periods). After the instructions, a researcher-made achievement test, the science learning anxiety test, and the science learning motivation test were administered. The results indicated that no statistically significant difference was found in students' achievement. In the science learning anxiety, however, the scores of the treatment group was significantly lower than those of the control group. The scores of the treatment group also tended to be higher, though not significant, than those of the control group in the science learning motivation. However, no significant aptitude-treatment interactions were found in all dependent variables.

텍스트이해를 위한 개념도사용의 효과적 활용전략:협력적 논쟁과 자기설명의 상호작용 효과 (Effects of Collaborative Argumentation and Self-Explanation on Text Comprehension in a Concept Mapping Context)

  • 개념도는 학생들이 갖고 있는 지식의 내용을 들여다 볼 수 있는 방법을 제공함으로써 학생들의 지식을 진단, 학습결과를 평가하는데 활용되고 있다. 더 나아가서 개념도를 활용하여 자신이 공부하는 내용을 조직하고 정리하는데 효과적인 전략으로 활용할 수 있을 뿐 아니라 서로 다른 생각을 가진 동료들 사이 협력을 용이하게 한다. 즉, 정신모형(mental model)을 쉽게 드러낼 수 있기 때문에 다른 생각을 파악하여 설득이나 설명을 용이하게 한다. 개념도의 잠재력을 잘 활용하기 위해서는 개념들 간 관계를 단순하게 연결짓기 보다는 그들 간 관계의 본질과 의미를 학생들이 생각해보도록 해야 한다. 본 연구는 개념도의 전략적 활용방법으로서 협력적 논쟁 상황과 개념들 간 설명의 요구가 대학생 52명의 텍스트이해에 긍정적인 영향이 있는 지 살펴보고자 하였다. 개념도 프로그램인 IHMC CMaptools를 활용하여 피험자들이 약 한 달에 걸쳐서 실험에 참여하였다. 협력적 논쟁여부 및 설명여부에 따라 네 조건에 피험자들은 무선배치되었다. 연구의 결과 우선 설명이 있는 집단 보다 오히려 설명이 없는 집단에서 개념이나 링크의 수가 유의미하게 높았음이 드러났다. 이는 제한된 실험시간에서 개념간 관계에 대한 설명의 시도가 개념이나 링크의 수와 부적인 관계를 가질 수 있다는 추측이 가능하다. 텍스트의 이해에 있어서 협력적 논쟁이나 설명의 여부 모두 주효과는 없었으며 대신 협력과 설명의 상호작용 효과가 통계적으로 유의한 것으로 나타났다. 개인학습 조건에서 설명이 있는 경우가 더 텍스트 이해에 효과적이었으며 반대로 협력적 논쟁조건에서는 설명이 없는 경우가 더 높은 텍스트 이해를 보였다. 이와 같은 연구결과를 논의에서는 실험 조건 및 문화적인 환경의 측면에서 해석을 시도하였다.

2010년 주요 의료 판결 분석 (Review of 2010 Major Medical Decisions)

  • Verdicts related to major medical litigation given by the Seoul Central District Court, the Seoul High Court and the Supreme Court in 2010 were analyzed. It's shown that in cases of the medical negligence regarding the occurrence of neonatal cerebral palsy, the plaintiff claims were dismissed using criteria proposed by associations of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Pediatrics in US, and thereof the burden of plaintiffs to prove the medical negligence has increased. In addition, in case of that the expected survival period of infants gets longer, payments for treatment and nursing after survival period determined by judges are made and it was judged to compensate it as a periodical indemnity. In case for the explanation obligation the most frequently mentioned in the medical litigation, in addition to cases of invoking the existing theory of explanation obligation, verdicts to mention the instructions of theory regarding instruction explanation obligation and the possibility of compensation for damages on property are given. Particularly, in cases for a liability of reparation by exaggerating the effects and not disclosing the risks related to treatment with stem cells, even if the treatment not approved by Food and Drug Administration is in violation of the Pharmaceutical Affairs Law, it's not illegal as violation in Pharmaceutical Affairs Law itself. But there is a certain verdict to present the possibility of an extension of the theory of explanation obligation by acknowledging the liability of reparation caused by illegal acts with no explanations of effects and risks of treatment with stem cell by doctors and pharmaceutical companies. In an incident in which a mental patient fell and died through the opened door of the roof at the hospital, a liability of reparation was acknowledged due to defects in structure installation management and this verdict drew an attention since the overall management responsibility about patients including structures was acknowledged to the hospital besides the obligations on medical practice. In case of the verdict without giving the opportunity to state the opinion with respect to the main legal issues, the responsibility of the court was emphasized since the court did not fulfill the explanation obligations. There were some cases in which payments for nursing and caring to a patient in vegetative state during the plastic surgery was admitted. However, in dental-related incidents, the proportion of cases in which plaintiff won was low since the difficulty of proving may be reflected. In the area of administrative litigation, unlike the existing position regarding arbitrary medical charge cover collected from patients in hospital, the verdict to admit the legitimacy of collection of medical treatment was given and attracted the attention of people. Verdict in which the expression related to medical advertisement was not exaggerated disposed the original verdict and pointed out the problem of excessive regulations on medical advertisement. The effort to analyze the trend of verdicts of court through reviewing the decisions and to organize should be continued, but the full decision should be disclosed as a base, and people and systems to enable the all time monitoring should be prepared.

대화형 에이전트의 설명 기능과 프라이버시 염려 수준에 따른 사용자 경험 차이에 관한 연구 (A Study on the User Experience according to the Existence of Explanation Facilities and Individuals Privacy Concern Level)

  • 오늘날 스마트 스피커는 점차 개인화되어 사용자들을 위해 특정 제품을 추천하는 추천 에이전트의 역할을 하고 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 스마트 스피커의 대화형 에이전트 맥락에서 '설명 기능'이 투명성, 인지된 신뢰, 사용자 만족도, 재사용 행동 의도, 프라이버시 위협, 추천 품질에 미치는 영향을 살펴보는 것이다. 또한 개인의 프라이버시 염려 수준이 평가에 영향을 미치는지 알아보기 위해 염려 수준을 사용자 구분을 위한 척도로 활용하였다. 연구결과, 설명이 있는 조건이 없는 조건 보다 모든 측정 변인에서 높게 평가되었음을 확인하였고, 프라이버시 염려 수준이 인지된 신뢰, 프라이버시 위협에 미치는 정적인 영향을 확인하였다. 본 연구는 스마트 스피커 맥락에서 설명 기능이 적용될 수 있다는 시사점과 프라이버시 역설 현상을 발견하였으며, 프라이버시 염려 수준에 따른 인지부조화의 가능성을 제시하였다.
