Finite element models were developed for thermal and residual stress analysis for the specific welding problems. They were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the various welding heat input models, such as ramp heat input function and lumped pass models. Through the parametric studies, thermal-mechanical modeling sensitivity to the ramp function and lumping techniques was determined by comparing the predicted results with experimental data. The kinetics for residual stress formation during welding can be developed by iteration of various proposed mechanisms in the parametric study. A ramp heat input function was developed to gradually apply the heat flux with variable amplitude to the model. This model was used to avoid numerical convergence problems due to an instantaneous increase in temperature near the fusion zone. Additionally, it enables the model to include the effect of a moving arc in a two-dimensional plane. The ramp function takes into account the variation in the out of plane energy flow in a 2-D model as the arc approaches, travels across, and departs from each plane under investigation. A lumped pass model was developed to reduce the computation cost in the analysis of multipass welds. Several weld passes were assumed as one lumped pass in this model. Recommendations were provided about ramp lumping techniques and the optimum number of weld passes that can be combined into a single thermal input.
Rayleigh wave and Love wave are the major elastic waves belonging to the category of the surface wave. The fact that Love wave is not contaminated by P-wave makes Love wave superior to Rayleish wave and other body waves. Therefore, the information that Love wave carries is more distinct and clearer than the information of Rayleigh wave. In this study, for the purpose of employing Love wave in the SASW method, the dispersion characteristics of the Love wave were extensively investigated by the theoretical, numerical and experimental approaches. The 2-D and 3-D finite element analyses for the half space and two-layer systems were performed to determine the phase velocities from Love wave as well as from both the vertical and the horizontal components of Rayleigh wave. Also, the SASW measurements were performed at the geotechnical sites to verify the results obtained by the numerical analysis. The results of the numerical analysis and the field testing indicated that the dispersion characteristics of Love wave can be an extended information to make better evaluation of the subsurface stiffness structure by SASW method.

Current design and analyzing methods about soil nailing structures, developed on the basis of results obtained from experiments in laboratory or in field and numerical analyses, have applied different interaction mechanisms between the reinforced nails and the surrounding ground, and different safety factors against failure have been obtained. They might be proper approaches if the assumptions about rigidity of nails and ground conditions are met with actual conditions occurred in field. Otherwise, they would result in designing on analyzing in inappropriate ways so that it is needed to evaluate the validity of them. Therefore, in this research using the Centrifugal Model Testing, numerical parameters experiments about soil nailing structures' behavior and failure mechanism were performed. In the numerical parameters experiments, transmuted nail's length, setting angle, nail's front panel, stiffness variously, and increased the level of gravity until wall model was destroyed. Based on experimental results, we compared the effect, failure mechanism caused from parameters changes. By reviewing and comparing centrifugal model test results and methods currently in use, verified validity of existing methods.

For the complicated structural details in ships and offshore structures, the traditional hotspot stress approaches are known to be sensitive to the element variables of element topologies, sizes, and integration schemes. This motivated to develop a new approach for predicting reasonable hotspot stresses, which is less sensitive to the element variables and easy to be implemented the real marine structures. The three-point bending tests were conducted for the longitudinal attachments with the round and rectangular weld toes. The tests were reproduced in the numerical simulations using the solid and shell element models, and the simulation technique was validated by comparing the experimental stresses with the simulated ones. This paper considered three hotspot stress approaches: the ESM method based on surface stress extrapolation, the Dong's method based on nodal forces along a weld toe, and the proposed method based on nodal forces perpendicular to an imaginary vertical plane at a weld toe. In order to study the element sensitivities of each method, 16 solid element models and 8 shell element models were generated under the bending and tension loads, respectively. The element sensitivity was analyzed in terms of Stress Concentration Factors (SCFs) in viewpoints of two statistical quantities of mean and bias with respect to the reference SCFs. The average SCFs predicted by the proposed method were remarkably in good agreement with the reference SCFs based on the experiments and the ship rules. Negligibly small Coefficients of Variation (CVs) of the SCFs, which is measure of statistical bias, were drawn by the proposed method.

This study proposes a supply chain network (SCN) model considering supply disruption in assembly industry. For supply disruption, supplier disruption and its route disruption are simultaneously taken into consideration in the SCN model. With the simultaneous consideration, the SCN model can achieve its flexibility and efficiency. A mathematical formulation is suggested for representing the SCN model, and a proposed hybrid genetic algorithm (pro-HGA) is used for implementing the mathematical formulation. In numerical experiment, the performance of the pro-HGA approach is compared with those of some conventional approaches using the SCN models with various scales, and a sensitivity analysis considering the change of the numbers of suppliers and backup routes is done. Experimental results show that the performances of the pro-HGA approach are superior to those of the conventional approaches, and the flexibility and efficiency of the SCN model considering supply disruption are proved. Finally, the significance of this study is summarized and a potential future research direction is mentioned in conclusion.

This paper is to evaluate the performance of a proposed hybrid genetic algorithm (pro-HGA) approach using closed-loop supply chain (CLSC) model. The proposed CLSC model is a integrated supply chain network model both with forward logistics and reverse logistics. In the proposed CLSC model, the reuse, resale and waste disposal using the returned products are taken into consideration. For implementing the proposed CLSC model, two conventional approaches and the pro-HGA are used in numerical experiment and their performances are compared with each other using various measures of performance. The experimental results show that the pro-HGA approach is more efficient in locating optimal solution than the other competing approaches.

In this paper, a sustainable closed-loop supply chain (SCLSC) network model is proposed for domestic mobile phone industry. Economic, environmental and social factors are respectively considered for reinforcing the sustainability of the SCLSC network model. These three factors aim at minimizing total cost, minimizing total amount of CO2 emission, and maximizing total social influence resulting from the establishment and operation of facilities at each stage of the SCLSC network model. Since they are used as each objective function in modeling, the SCLSC network model can be a multi-objective optimization problem. A mathematical formulation is used for representing the SCLSC network model and a hybrid meta-heuristic approach is proposed for efficiently solving it. In numerical experiment, the performance of the proposed hybrid meta-heuristic approach is compared with those of conventional meta-heuristic approaches using some scales of the SCLSC network model. Experimental results shows that the proposed hybrid meta-heuristic approach outperforms conventional meta-heuristic approaches.
This work approaches the structural performance of masonry arches that have a small ratio between number of vossoirs and span length. The aim of this research is to compare and validate three different methods of analysis (funicular limit analysis F.L.A., kinematic limit analysis K.L.A. and plane stress Finite Element Analysis F.E.A.) with an experimental campaign. 18 failure tests with arches of different shapes and boundary conditions have been performed. The basic failure mechanism was the formation of enough hinges in the geometry. Nevertheless, in few cases, sliding between vossoirs also played a relevant influence. Moreover, few arches didn't reach the collapse. The FLA and KLA didn't find a solution close to the experimental values for some of the tests. The low number of vossoirs and joints become a drawback for an agreement between kinematic mechanism, equilibrium of forces and geometry constraints. FLA finds a lower bound whereas KLA finds an upper bound of the ultimate load of the arch. FEA is the most reliable and robust method and it can reproduce most of the mechanism and ultimate loads. However, special care is required in the definition of boundary conditions for FEA analysis. Scientific justification of the more suitability of numerical methods in front of classic methods at calculating arches with a few vossoirs is the main original contribution of the paper.
Nuclear accidents such as Fukushima Daiichi have highlighted the potential of passive safety systems to replace or complement active safety systems as part of the overall prevention and/or mitigation strategies. In addition, passive systems are key features of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), for which they are becoming almost unavoidable and are part of the basic design of many reactors available in today's nuclear market. Nevertheless, their potential to significantly increase the safety of nuclear power plants still needs to be strengthened, in particular the ability of computer codes to determine their performance and reliability in industrial applications and support the safety demonstration. The PASTELS project (September 2020-February 2024), funded by the European Commission "Euratom H2020" programme, is devoted to the study of passive systems relying on natural circulation. The project focuses on two types, namely the SAfety COndenser (SACO) for the evacuation of the core residual power and the Containment Wall Condenser (CWC) for the reduction of heat and pressure in the containment vessel in case of accident. A specific design for each of these systems is being investigated in the project. Firstly, a straight vertical pool type of SACO has been implemented on the Framatome's PKL loop at Erlangen. It represents a tube bundle type heat exchanger that transfers heat from the secondary circuit to the water pool in which it is immersed by condensing the vapour generated in the steam generator. Secondly, the project relies on the CWC installed on the PASI test loop at LUT University in Finland. This facility reproduces the thermal-hydraulic behaviour of a Passive Containment Cooling System (PCCS) mainly composed of a CWC, a heat exchanger in the containment vessel connected to a water tank at atmospheric pressure outside the vessel which represents the ultimate heat sink. Several activities are carried out within the framework of the project. Different tests are conducted on these integral test facilities to produce new and relevant experimental data allowing to better characterize the physical behaviours and the performances of these systems for various thermo-hydraulic conditions. These test programmes are simulated by different codes acting at different scales, mainly system and CFD codes. New "system/CFD" coupling approaches are also considered to evaluate their potential to benefit both from the accuracy of CFD in regions where local 3D effects are dominant and system codes whose computational speed, robustness and general level of physical validation are particularly appreciated in industrial studies. In parallel, the project includes the study of single and two-phase natural circulation loops through a bibliographical study and the simulations of the PERSEO and HERO-2 experimental facilities. After a synthetic presentation of the project and its objectives, this article provides the reader with findings related to the physical analysis of the test results obtained on the PKL and PASI installations as well an overall evaluation of the capability of the different numerical tools to simulate passive systems.

Penetration of a fragment-like projectile into Fiber Reinforced Concrete (FRC) was simulated using finite element (FE) and particle formulations. Extreme deformations and failure of the material during the penetration event were modeled with multiple approaches to evaluate how well each represented the actual physics of the penetration process and compared to experimental data. A Fragment Simulating Projectile(FSP) normally impacting a flat, square plate of FRC was modeled using two target thicknesses to examine the different levels of damage. The thinner plate was perforated by the FSP, while the thicker plate captured the FSP and only allowed penetration part way through the thickness. Full three dimensional simulations were performed, so the capability was present for non-symmetric FRC behavior and possible projectile rotation in all directions. These calculations assessed the ability of the finite element and particle formulations to calculate penetration response while assessing criteria necessary to perform the computations. The numerical code EPIC contains the element and particle formulations, as well as the explicit methodology and constitutive models, needed to perform these simulations.
