  • This study aimed to find the effect of parental experiences from the family-of-origin and childrearing behaviors on their children's behavioral problems, as well as if this path differed according to the child's gender. The subjects were 1247, 4/sup th/ and 5/sup th/ graders in eight elementary schools and their parents in Seoul, Pusan, and Daejon, Korea. The data were analyzed using the Structural Equation Modeling(SEM) to verify the theoretical models among the variables. The results showed differences between the father-child model and the mother-child model on the pathways of the impact of parental experiences from the family-of-origin upon the child's internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems through parental negative rejection and permission childrearing behaviors. Specifically, 1) the father-child model showed a gender difference on the pathways of the impact of the father's experiences from the family-of-origin upon the child's internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems through the father's rejection and permission childrearing behaviors; whereas, 2) The mother-child model showed no gender difference on the pathways of the impact of the mother's experiences from the family-of-origin upon the child's internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems through the mother's negative childrearing behaviors.

Questionnaires regarding family relationships, alcohol problem, domestic violence, and health in family or origin were distributed to 500 people who visited Busan Family court for filing divorce and 3% questionnaires were collected by the staff of the Family court in April, 2004. As for analyzing the data, using SPSS/WIN 10.0 program, t-test and ANOVA were conducted. The results of analyses are as follows. First, more respondents tended to report that theirs parents' marital relationship was bad in their childhood than parent-child relationship. Second, 41% of all respondents reported that their parents have had alcohol problems, and 32% reported that there had been domestic violence between their parents. Third, the overall score of health in family of origin was lower than the medium score, which implies the lower health in family of origin among the divorce deciders. Lastly, there were some differences in experiences of family of origin in terms of some demographic variables such as gender, education, and religion. Women tended to perceived their family relationship more positively than men did. Also, highly educated group of divorce deciders reported lower parental alcohol problem and higher health in family of origin than the group of lower education. Respondents which had specific religions reported that their parents have had less alcohol problems, and higher health in family-of-origin.

  • Participants in this study were 1.245 4th and 5th graders and their parents from 8 elementary schools in Seoul, Daejeon, and Pusan. Using the Korean Youth Self-Report (K-YSR), children's behavior problems were measured and assigned to either clinical or normal groups. Between group differences were that the educational level of mothers of internalizing girls was lower than that of normal girls. Girls with internalizing problems had more siblings than normal girls. Parents of both boys and girls with either internalizing or externalizing problems were more rejecting and/or permissive than parents of children without behavior problems. Fathers of children with behavior problems perceived more marital conflicts, while mothers whose children have behavior problems had more negative family-of-origin experiences compared to parents of normal children.
