Effect of Consumer Expectation Measured by Consumers on Advertising Expenditures (소비자 심리지수를 통한 소비자 예측이 광고비에 미치는 영향)

  • We investigate whether consumers' expectations affect managers' decisions. In particular, we examined whether the expectations that consumers make about the changes of their financial situations and family incomes are positively related to the decisions that managers make about advertising expenditures. We analyzed consumers' expectations as well as the advertising expenditures of 6,018 firms between 1991 and 2011. Our analysis supported our hypothesis. Our findings contribute to the discussions regarding the effect of consumer expectations on manager decisions as well as provide practical implications to advertising managers.

Changes in the Clothing Expenditure Patterns of Korean Households (90년대 이후 도시가계 피복비 지출 패턴의 구조적 변화)

  • The purpose of this research was to examine the level and trends in household clothing expenditure in Korea. Raw data sets produced by the National Statistical Office from the Family Income and Expenditure Survey from 1991 to 2004 were used to support time-series and cross-sectional analyses. The clothing expenditures decreased severely and quickly during the economic crisis of late 1997 through 1998, then increased slowly after the economic crisis until 2003, only to slightly decrease again in 2004. The ratio of clothing expenditure to total household expenditure decreased from 8.03% in 1991 to 5.11% in 2004. This decrease in relative clothing expenditure was greater in the lower income group than in the middle and high income groups. Clothing expenditure patterns were unique and differed from other household expenditures. Although the economic crisis in the late 1990s affected Korean consumers' clothing expenditure, clothing expenditure patterns showed a more fundamental and structural change from 1991 to 2004, with the overall decrease in such expenditure resulting from the concurrent increase in educational and information-communication related expenditures. Clothing expenditure was shown to be luxurious through cross-sectional analysis, but necessary through time-series analysis.

Process Analysis of Housing Poverty Influences on Child Development (주거빈곤이 아동발달에 여향을 미치는 과정 분석)

  • This study examines the effects and process of housing poverty on children's physical health, internalizing problems and academic achievement using the first Korea Welfare Panel Study. The results show that sub-minimum standard housing condition and housing expenditures have increased the housing instability, non-study activities, while harming parent's health and decreasing non-housing expenditures. And this process negatively affects children's internalizing problems and academic achievement. The findings of this study have value for controlling the confounding factors as income poverty, neighborhood poverty and characters of household. This research is significant in that it develops the theoretical model of housing poverty and suggests the necessity of interventions to alleviate housing poverty.

Time Trend of Out-of-pocket Expenditure among Cancer Inpatients: Evidence from Korean Tertiary Hospitals

  • Background: This study aimed to examine out-of-pocket expenditure for cancer treatments of hospitalized patients and to analyze changing patterns over time. Materials and Methods: This study examined data of all cancer patients receiving inpatient care from two tertiary hospitals from January 2003 to December 2010. Medical expenditures per admission were calculated and classified into those covered and uncovered by the Korean National Health Insurance (NHI) and co-payment. Results: The medical expenditure per admission increased slowly from 3,455 thousand Korean won (KRW) to 4,068 thousand KRW. While expenditures covered by the NHI have increased annually, co-payments have generally decreased. The out-of-pocket expenditure ratio, which means the proportion of uncovered expenditure and co-payment among total medical expenditure dropped sharply from 2005 to 2007 and was maintained at a similar level after 2007. Medical expenditures, NHI coverage, and the out-of-pocket expenditure ratio differed across cancer types. Conclusions: It is necessary to continually monitor the expenditure of uncovered services by the NHI, and to provide policies to reduce this economic burden. In addition, an individual approach considering cancer type-specific characteristics and medical utilization should be provided.

Consumer Income and Expenditure Influenced by Business Cycles: A Comparison of Korea and the US

  • This research is concerned with comparing fluctuation in the Korean and the US economies in order to ascertain the degree to which the former is influenced by changes in the latter. The aim of this research is to explore business cycles, to examine consumer expenditure in Korea and the US, and to discover the relationships between business fluctuation indexes and overall expenditure. Statistical data from the national statistics of Korea and the US during period from 1990 to 2015 were used. The instrument included a measure of GDP, unemployment rates, GDP deflator rate (inflation rates), and household income and expenditure. For the average annual household expenditures, food, apparel and transportation expenditure data were compared across the two countries. Data were collected separately from different (though comparable) sources and were analyzed using relatively straight forward statistical techniques. It was found that Korean and the US consumers' income and expenditure were greatly affected by economic fluctuations. Total expenditure and the expenditures for food and transportation were much influenced by business fluctuation in the US, whereas, the expenditures for apparel were much influenced by business fluctuation in Korea.

The Effectiveness of Tax Incentive Policy on R&D Expenditures (기술개발지원 조세제도의 효과와 정책 시사점)

  • There has been considerable controversy over the impacts of the tax credit on R&D expenditures in many countries. Korea has adopted various kinds of tax credit system to stimulate private firm' R&D expenditures. Korean government, Recently, is trying to reform tax system to reduce tax credit programmes according to Uruguay Round agreement and in line with OECD policy standards. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the effectiveness of current tax credit system on technology innovation in Korea and derive some policy implications over tax reform. In this paper, firstly, I investigate the size of tax reduction effects from each program in theoretical models and simulate the actual rate of individual tax incentive to a unit of R&D expenditure. I find that theoretically the reserve fund for technology development program has given the largest tax reduction effects to private firms irrespective of the R&D incentive system reform. Tax credit on R&D expenditure also has been very effective instrument to firm's tax reduction. Secondly, I try to measure the effectiveness of tax credit through the estimation of effective margianl tax rate between with the system and without the system of credit on R&D expenditure during the tax credit reform periods. I find that the tax credit on R&D has lowered firm's investment cost since the system introduced. I also have strong results that there has been a positive relation between the fluctuation of firm's R&D expenditure and the change of effective marginal tax rate. I suggest that it is better to sustain the system of tax credit on R&D for a while to increase firm's R&D expenditure.

Comparison Actual Conversion Factor with Estimated Conversion Factor by Fee Adjustment Model Reflecting Health Service Volume (서비스양을 고려한 수가 결정모형에 의한 추정 환산지수와 실제 환산지수의 비교)

  • Background: Price control alone may not successfully restrain growth in health expenditures. This study aimed to propose fee adjustment model suitable for Korea reflecting health service volume and to clarify applicability of the model by comparing actual conversion factor with estimated conversion factor from simulation of this model. Methods: Fee adjustment model was developed based on Alberta's fee adjustment formula in Canada and 7 alternatives were assessed according to diversely applied parameters of the model. Results: Estimated conversion factors of the tertiary care hospital and the hospital were lower than actual conversion factors, since the utilization of heath service has been increased. However, there was no big difference between estimated conversion factors and actual conversion factors of the general hospital and the clinic. Eventually this fee adjustment model could estimate proper conversion factor reflecting health service volume. Conclusion: This model may be applicable to the mechanism as determining conversion factor between insurer and provider via negotiation and controling growth in health expenditures.

Male Consumer's Perceptions of Fashion Brands' Advertising Investment and Brand Equity (패션 브랜드의 광고 투자에 대한 남성 소비자의 인식과 브랜드 자산과의 관계)

  • This study examined the relationship between Korean male consumers' perceptions of marketing promotion investment such as advertising expenditure and celebrity endorsement are the brand equity elements. It also compared if there were differences on this research model and two groups that selected Korean or foreign country-of-brand-origin in fashion product purchasing. Online survey responses from 414 Korean men in their 20s-30s were analyzed using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation modeling analysis (SEM). Perceptions of advertising expenditures were found to be positively related to brand association in only the group that selected Korean country-of-brand-origin. The results showed a non-significant effect of perceptions for advertising expenditures on perceived product quality in both groups that selected Korean or foreign country-of-brand-origin. The results indicated that celebrity endorsement had a significant effect on brand association for the two male consumer groups. The results also demonstrated that the relationship of celebrity endorsement and perceived quality was significant in only a group that selected Korean country-of-brand-origin. The results also revealed that the effect of brand association and perceived product quality on brand preference was significant in both male consumer groups. This study has useful managerial implications for enhancing the effectiveness of investment in advertising activities.

Household's Food and Beverage Expenditure Patterns (가계의 식료품비 지출패턴)

  • We examined household's food expenditures in this study. The empirical work outlined here used quarterly data from 2003 Q1 to 2010 Q3. All variables are in log form and were obtained from the Korea National Statistical Office. The food items included cereals, dairy products, fruits, meat, vegetables, and alcoholic beverages. We applied the ordinary least squares method to a model consisting of household income and seasonal dummies. This is because household expenditures are ordinarily a function of income and have seasonal characteristics. The household's food consumption patterns also reflect the prevailing social and environmental circumstances. This study showed that the income coefficients of cereals, meat, dairy products, and alcoholic beverages tend to increase in the long-run, whereas those of vegetables and fruits decreased. The results also revealed that consumption of alcoholic beverages and meat was greatly affected by household income fluctuations, whereas those of vegetables and dairy products were not sensitive to income. The impulse response functions indicated that expenditures not only increased slowly before peaking one to eight quarters after the income shock but declined very slowly to pre-shock levels. The response of dairy products at the twelfth step was three times as large as that of the first step.

Rent-seeking for Budgetary Allocations in Korean Fisheries (수산예산의 배분변화에 관한 분석- 지대추구이론을 중심으로 -)

  • In this paper I tried quantitative measures of the rent-seeking for budgetary allocations in Korean fisheries. There is a great deal of ignorance about the level of rent-seeking that takes place as a consequence of government expenditures and the potential for influencing their allocation, and so the attempt by Kats and Rosenberg(1989) to measure this in terms of the extent of annual changes in these allocations was a significant step forward. The opportunity to concentrate net public expenditure benefits within the fiscal function of the state gives rise to rent-seeking by special interest taxpayer-citizens through government budget allocations, special interest groups and coalitions of special interest groups. There are several important implications of budgetary rent-seeking. Budgetary rent-seeking is composed of 'income' and substitution effects, the budgetary 'income' effect is the general increase in government expenditures from one period to another. According to result of this analysis, average expenditures were 17.0% of total fisheries budget in 1966-2005. Therefore, distribution of fisheries budget should be converted by indirect support systems to reduce these rent-seeking behaviors.
