  • This paper economically analyzes the benefits and concerns of the sharing economy and derives policy implications that could help to achieve the expected benefits and respond appropriately to any concerns. Primary benefits anticipated from the sharing economy are the creation of new transactions and promotional and market testing opportunities, and the main concerns include the crowding out of existing transactions as well as transaction and social risks. How these benefits and concerns are being realized in Korea is empirically examined by conducting a survey on participation experiences with the sharing economy. The sharing economy is expected to contribute to the enhancement of social welfare with its wide range of benefits if risk factors can be properly controlled. Accordingly, an institutional framework is needed to support the stable growth of the sharing economy, and the unique characteristics of non-professional, peer-to-peer transactions should be reflected in tandem with regulatory equity between existing and sharing economy suppliers. To do this, transaction-volume-based regulations are recommended. Furthermore, to secure regulatory effectiveness and to alleviate transaction risks, the pertinent obligations must be imposed on sharing platforms.

  • There has been investments by firms to protect workers' health and to improve their health status. Most of the investments are made on the ground of legal requirement. However many argue that the amount of investments made falls short of the legally required level. One of the reasons why firms are not active in undertaking required investments is that they are not certain whether such investment is economically beneficial to them or not. Using CBA (Cost-Benefit Analysis), this study investigates whether firms' investments on workers' health are economically justifiable or not. All kinds of expected costs and benefits are itemized and calculated, and costs are compared with benefits. The result shows that if firms fully undertake the legally required investments, total expected costs amount to W453.2 billion and expected benefits accruing to reductions from medical care costs, workers compensation costs, litigation costs in case of legal suit, work days lost, and etc. comes up to W2,086.8 billion. In other words, economic benefits from firms' investment on industrial health far outweighs their costs. As the economy grows, the probability of having various occupational disease increases. It is well conceivable from this study outcome that, the higher the probability, the greater the social loss would be, and the greater the benefits from proper investments on workers' health.

  • This study focuses on social norms and perceived benefits that are expected to lead to purchase fashion goods selling by social enterprises that can help guide the establishment of effective sales strategies for social enterprises. The relationships among two social norms (injunctive norms and descriptive norms), three perceived benefits (cause benefits, psychological benefits, and social image benefits), and purchase intention were investigated respectively. Data were collected via an online web survey and 11 hypotheses were statistically tested by using PLS-SEM analysis. Purchase intention toward the fashion products of social enterprises was influenced by four antecedent variables (injunctive and descriptive norms, cause and psychological benefits) excluding only social image benefits. However, descriptive norms only affected psychological benefits while injunctive norms only affected social image benefits. The findings suggest that the owners or marketers of social enterprises need to create a social atmosphere in which more consumers buy the fashion goods for social enterprises and emphasize consumers' psychological benefits that they feel mentally more comfortable by purchasing the fashion goods of social enterprises.

  • In the field of logistics, the maritime shipping industry plays a critical role as the backbone of global trade activities. Nevertheless, previous studies on the commercialization and benefits of blockchain technology are limited in the field of marine logistics. Thus, the purpose of this study was to predict the benefit for each group involved in marine logistics when blockchain technology is applied. As such, 21 factors of benefits were selected for seven major logistics groups (financial institutions, freight forwarders, inland transportation, ocean carriers, port operators, port-related government authorities, and shippers) to study the benefit expected for each through the commercialization of blockchain technology. Based on the results, a different benefit level is expected for each group when blockchain technology is used. In order, ocean carriers (0.155), inland transportation (0.150), financial institutions (0.153), port operators (0.145), freight forwarders (0.142), port-related government authorities (0.129), and shippers (0.126) were found to benefit most from the use of blockchain technology. This study has industrial implications in that it presents the benefits expected when blockchain technology is realized and used in marine logistics by groups involved in logistics transactions.

  • Purpose: The objective of this study is to evaluate the fringe benefits provided by the entrepreneurs in BSCIC (Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation) industrial estates in light of the relevant labor laws of Bangladesh. Research question: Fringe benefits are one of the major factors in compensation that play a vital role in employee satisfaction. However, the issue has yet to be taken into consideration in the industrial units. So, the question arises: what is the present condition of employee fringe benefits in industrial estates? Research design, data, and methods: To conduct this mixed-methods research, a total of 222 respondents were selected randomly from employees and entrepreneurs. Two sets of self-administered questionnaires and KIIs were used to collect primary data, while SPSS was used to analyze the data. Major findings and conclusions: The study shows that the conditions of leave and holidays do not comply with labor laws. Further, aspects of maternity leaves, disability/death benefits, retirement benefits, and other financial and non-financial benefits are found not to be at a satisfactory level and do not comply with the existing labor laws. However, the benefits relating to environmental issues are found to be satisfactory. It is expected that the study findings will contribute to the existing literature related to fringe benefits and will help stakeholders and policymakers in formulating and monitoring compensation packages.
