The rapid expansion of buildings and paved roads increases the risk of flood disaster in an urban area. One of the solutions can be the use of permeable pavements. This study evaluated the permeability of permeable blocks used for the roadway pavement. Joint fillers and mat sands of the investigated blocks met the corresponding standards. The flexural strength of the blocks was 5.29 MPa to meet these standards. Based on interior permeability test results after pollution, the four products evaluated were categorized into the following three levels: One for the $1^{st}$ level, one for the $2^{nd}$ level and two for the $3^{rd}$ level. From the field permeability test and pervious concrete infiltration test results nine months after their construction, all the products except one passed the quality standards of 0.1 mm/s.

As the intense heat continues, many cases of highway pavement blow up and bridge expansion joints damages have been inspected. Especially, Expansion joint closure of bridges is an important problem that can threat the safety of the bridge structure or reduce long-term durability. This paper proposed a structural analysis method for bridges having expansion joint closure and structural analysis was performed to verify the effects according to bridge types. Analysis bridges were divided into four types: concrete and steel bridges, shallow and piled foundations. To induce the situation of abutments and bridge decks are jammed, the following loads were additionally considered; lateral flow pressure, pavement expansion by alkali-aggregate reaction, creep settlement of backfill. The structural analysis method was verified by comparing the structural analysis results with the actually measured joint gap data. In addition, behavioral analysis due to joint closure was conducted to confirm the change in safety ratio by type of superstructure as the axial force increased.
PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to evaluate the degree of restraint (DOR) of longitudinal steel at continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP) against environmental loadings. METHODS : To measure the longitudinal steel strain, 3-electrical resistance and self-temperature compensation gauges were installed to CRCP test section (thickness = 250mm, steel ratio = 0.7%) and continuously measured 10 min. intervals during 259 days. In order to properly analyze the steel strains first, temperature compensation process has been conducted. Secondly, measured steel strains were divided into 12 phases with different events such as before paving, during concrete hardening, and after first cracking, etc. RESULTS : Thermal strain rate (TSR) concept is defined as the linear strain variations with temperature changes and restraints rate of longitudinal steel against environmental loadings (especially thermal loading) with different cases is defined as degree of restraint(DOR). New concept of DOR could be indirect indicator of crack width behaviors of CRCP. CONCLUSIONS : Before paving, DOR of longitudinal steel is almost same at the coefficient of thermal expansion of steel ($12.44m/m/^{\circ}C$) because of no restraint boundary condition. After concrete pouring, DOR is gradually changed into -1 due to concrete stiffness developing with hydration. After first cracking at crack induced area, values of DOR are around -3~-5. The negative DOR stands for the crack width behavior instead of steel strain behavior. During winter season, DOR reached to -5.77 as the highest, but spring this values gradually reduced as -1.7 as the lowest. Based on this observation, we can presume crack width decreased over time within the time frame of this study. This finding is not consistent with the current theory on crack width variations over time, so further study is necessary to identify the causes of crack width reducing. One of the reasons could be related to concrete stress re-distribution and stress relaxation.

This study was performed to proof expansion effect of the mortar bar due to Alkali-silica Reaction (ASR) by ASTM C 1260 test. Recently, the failure case of cement concrete pavement by ASR was reported in Korea. Cement concrete structures are caused crack by ASR. The service life of cracked cement concrete structures by ASR will be shorted. In this study, crushed the slate rock producted Chungcheongnamdo Boryeong was caused 0.3% expansion at 14 days due to ASR by ASTM C 1260 test. The particular spectrum showed that the ASR gel was analyzed contents included Si, Na, K, and Ca by EDX (electron dispersive X-ray spectrometer). It was verified that the crushed aggregate was caused expansion by ASR in Korea.

Three full-scale instrumented test slabs were constructed and tested using a heavy vehicle simulator (HVS) to evaluate the structural behavior of internally cured concrete (ICC) for use in pavements under Florida condition. Three mix designs selected from a previous laboratory testing program include the standard mixture with 0.40 water-cement ratio, the ICC with 0.32 water-cement ratio, and the ICC mixture with 0.40 water-cement ratio. Concrete samples were prepared and laboratory tests were performed to measure strength, elastic modulus, coefficient of thermal expansion and shrinkage properties. The environmental responses were measured using strain gages, thermocouples, and linear variable differential transformers instrumented in full-scale concrete slabs. A 3-D finite element model was developed and calibrated using strain data measured from the full-scale tests using the HVS. The results indicate that the ICC slabs were less susceptible to the change of environmental conditions and appear to have better potential performance based on the critical stress analysis.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the alkali-silica reactivity for aggregates in Korea according to test methods: accelerated mortar bar test (AMBT) by ASTM C 1260; chemical test by KS F 2545 (ASTM C 289). The results are as follows: The AMBT (ASTM C 1260) results showed that two (2) igneous rocks (two mica granite and felsite), three (3) sedimentary rocks (arkose, red sandstone and shale), two (2) metamorphic rock (slate and vitric tuff), one (1) mineral (quartz) showed more expansion than 0.1% at 14 days. But, some sedimentary rocks and metamorphic rocks expanded more than 0.1% at 28 days even though they were less than 0.1% at 14 days. Therefore, it is necessary to extend the experimental dates more than 14 days to evaluate the possibility of alkali-aggregate reactivity. The chemical test (KS F 2545) results showed that five (5) igneous rocks (andesite, diabase, granite porphyry, muscovite granite and diorite) were indicative of potentially deleterious expansion, while two (2) igneous rocks (diorite porphyry and quartz porphyry) were possible indicative of expansion, and three (3) igneous rocks (biotite granite, two mica granite and felsite) were indicative of innocuous reactivity. The above results showed that the results from chemical method (KS F 2545) and AMBT (ASTM C 1260) had little relationship.

PURPOSES: The problem under this circumstance is that the erosion not only drops strength of the steel dowel bar but also comes with volume expansion of the steel dowel bar which can reduce load transferring efficiency of the steel dowel bar. To avoid this erosion problem, alternative dowers bars are developed. METHODS: In this study, the bearing stresses between the FRP tube dowel bar and concrete slab are calculated and compared with its allowable bearing stress to check its structural stability in the concrete pavement. These comparisons are conducted with several cross-sections of FRP tube dowel bars. Comprehensive laboratory tests including the shear load-deflection test on a full-scale specimen and the full-scale accelerated joint concrete pavement test are conducted and the results were compared with those from the steel dowel bar. RESULTS: In all cross-sections of FRP tube dowel bars, computed bearing stresses between the FRP tube dowel bar and concrete slab are less than their allowable stress levels. The pultrusion FRP-tube dowel bar show better performance on direct shear tests on full-scale specimen and static compression tests at full-scale concrete pavement joints than prepreg and filament-winding FRP-tube dowel bar. CONCLUSIONS: The FRP tube dowel bars as alternative dowel bar are invulnerable to erosion that may be caused by moisture from masonry joint or bottom of the pavement system. Also, the pultrusion FRP-tube dowel bar performed very well on the laboratory evaluation.
Torsional behavior of concrete pavement slabs due to temperature and moisture effects is constrained by self weight and friction etc, and causes stress as the result. The stress due to humidity variation in the slab is difficult to calculate while that due to temperature variation can easily be calculated by a commercial structural analysis program. Thus, the slab behavior can be predicted more accurately if the humidity effect is converted to equivalent temperature and is used as an input of structural analysis. In this study, a concrete pavement slab was constructed and strains of the slab due to environmental loadings were measured for long-term period. Thermal strains were subtracted from the measured strains by using thermal expansion coefficient of the concrete measured in a laboratory. Shrinkage strains, the remained strains, was supposed as additional thermal strains to calculate imaginary temperature with equivalent effect of the shrinkage by dividing the shrinkage with the thermal expansion coefficient. An existing shrinkage model was modified by considering the self weight and friction to be used in another model which can convert differential shrinkage between top and bottom of the slab to equivalent temperature difference. Addition research efforts on tensile stress reduction according to steady increase in the compressive strains are warranted for more accurate stress calculation.

The planar effects on the concrete pavements Is mainly due to the concrete shrinkage, subgrade friction, and thermal expansion or contraction. A complete understanding of analytical behavior of concrete pavement requires the development of computer model, stiffness matrix and equivalent nodal load matrices due to the effects mentioned above. A computer program, INPLANE II, has been written to evaluate the planar effects on concrete pavements. The planar effects determine to what degree the joint open and also help In determining factors which affect the joint stiffnesses and structural behavior of concrete Pavements.
Most of domestic expansion joint system was applied by exposed expansion joint system. There are cases where it is damaged by driving. As the result noise and impact happened, and the social cost due to frequent repair works is increasing. So based on the Asphalt Plug Joint(APJ) system that applied in the United States and Europe, new buried expansion joint system was lately developed a system of Buried Folding Lattice Joint(BFLJ) that changed substructure. In this research, we have tested for durability and flexibility performance of buried expansion joint system that based on the type of asphalt mixture. Also we have evaluated for durability of BFLJ system against vehicle load using accelerated pavement testing. As a result of the experiment, the developed BFLJ system gives high flexibility performance and resolves transformation concentration along the joint section more than APJ system. Also it could be seen that the BFLJ system could overcome the disadvantages of APJ and prevent early damage. Because surface deflection of BFLJ system against vehicle load was measured low, and sub system in the buried expansion joint system was not damaged against vehicle load.
