  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the fundamental properties of polyurethan concrete. Polyurethane must be expanded by means of a blowing agent during polymerization. Chemical blowing is caused by the reaction water with isocyanate. Binder system for polyurethane concrete is based on polyol and isocyanate with catalyst, surfactant, and methyl chloride. Polyurethane concretes are prepared with various grading of aggregate, and tested for compressive, flexural strengths, flow test, foaming multiple proportion, working life, condition of surface, distirbution of aggregate. From the test results, the foaming of polyurethane concretes are affceted by amount and grading of aggregate. Workability increases with raising amount of methy chloride and working life reduced according to amount of catalyst. The mix proportion of B with methyl chloride of 1% and catalyst of 0.1g for polyurethane concrete is recommended in consideration of strengths, condition of surface and balance between cost and performance.

  • This paper illustrates an experimental study on a self compacting polymer concrete called isobeton made of polyurethane foam and expanded clay. Several experiments were conducted to characterize the physic-mechanical properties of the considered material. Application of the Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM) and determining the toughness of two isobetons based on Belgian and Italian clay, was conducted to determine the stress intensity factor $K_{IC}$ and the rate of releasing energy $G_{IC}$. The material considered was tested under static and dynamic loadings for two different samples with $10{\times}10{\times}40$ and $10{\times}15{\times}40cm$ dimensions. The result obtained by the application of the Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM) shows that is optimistic and fulfilled the physic-mechanical requirement of the study.

  • Spandex is a elastomeric fiber in which the-fiber-forming substance is a long chain polymer consisting of at least 85% segmented polyurethane. In the polyurethanes there are the additional oxygen atoms in the main chains of the molecule. The effect of these oxygen atoms is to make the molecule somewhat more flexible. From a physical point of view, elasicity and recovery from stretch are the most important properties of polyurethane, so its use has now expanded into many kitting industry. In this paper, I wish to Test the effect of dyeing condition on the quality of polyurethane.

  • We synthesized polyurethane adhesive having thermal characteristic could be debonded by heat treatment and made a dismantlable polyurethane adhesive including thermally expansive bead. We used dynamic mechanical thermal analyzer (DMA) to confirm thermal characteristic and investigated bond strength, dismantlement property of dismantlable polyurethane adhesive by content of thermally expansive bead, heating trigger and treatment conditions. The dismantlable polyurethane adhesive could be expanded by hot-air or microwave treatment and the dismantlement of the specimens became easier as the weight fraction of the thermally expansive bead increased. At the dismantlable polyurethane adhesive, the content of thermally expansive bead 40% was suitable for both bond strength and dismantlement, in case of using hot-air treatment as trigger for dismantlement, bonded joints were separated easily at $160^{\circ}C$ for 30 min and in case of using microwave as trigger, bonded joints were separated easily by irradiating microwave for 4 min.

  • A constitutive equation, which was suggested for describing the compressive deformation behaviour of the expanded polyurethane, was applied to the expanded polypropylene under dynamic loading. This equation consists of seven parameters, five of which are obtained by fitting the stress strain curve obtained from the quasi-static compression test at the lowest base strain rate. The remaining two parameters are able to be determined by fitting the curve from the compression test at different two stage strain rates. In order to check the eligibility of the equation at high strain rate, the impact test was performed and the results were compared to the analytical constitutive equation results for the expanded polypropylene with expansion ratios of 30 and 40 times, respectively.

  • Oil-absorptive expanded polyurethane (EPU) was prepared with a lypophilic polyol, polypropyleneglycol (PPG) as the soft segment, and toluenediisocyanate (TDI) and $H_2O$ as the hard segment. PPGs haying various average molecular weights ((equation omitted) : 1000, 2000, 3000) were employed to investigate that the soft segment content was consequent on the oil-absorptivity and the mechanical properties of the EPUs. As (equation omitted) of PPG was decreased from 3000 to 1000, the oil-absorptivity and the tensile strength of the EPUs increased from 1460 to 3010% and from 0.26 to 0.55 $kg_{f}$ /$cm^2$ respectively. As the hard segment content ratio, ${\gamma}$ ([NCO]/[OH]) was increased from 1.0 to 1.2, the tensile strength of the EPUs increased from 0.56 to 0.95 $kg_{f}$ /$cm^2$, due to the formation of allophanate and/or biuret bondings. However, as the surfactant (S-A) content was increased from 1.0 to 2.5 pbw, the oil-absorptivity was decreased from 3634 to 3312%, due to the formation of closed cell structures.

  • The impact absorption materials made of synthetic organic chemical product like Expanded Polystyrene(EPS), Expanded Polyethylene(EPE), Expanded Polyurethane(EPU), etc. have been used with general packaging material until the present. But nowadays, the use of these materials is intended to be decreased and to be recycled in connection with environmental pollution. In addition, it has been tried to substitute these materials with non-pollution materials(natural materials) like pulp mould, paper protectors, etc. At the same time, it is required to evaluate and analyze these cushioning materials for cushioning properties based on impact and vibration, in order to make an efficiency on the overall packaging system because they are generally being used by a random choice regardless of the properties of contents and cushioning materials. Therefore, this study provides analyzed data on cushioning properties of various cushioning materials against impact and vibration, and is intended to provide more efficient model for packaging system by minimizing their using amount through choosing an optimal cushioning material as well as intended to lead to the use of nonpollution materials in case these cushioning materials have same cushioning properties.

  • The performance and removal efficiencies of a pilot scale biofilter were estimated by using ammonia and hydrogen sulfide as the odorous gases. Expanded polyurethane foam coated with powdered activated carbon and zeolite was used as a biofilm supporting medium in the biofilter. Odorous gases from the sludge thickener of a municipal wastewater treatment plant were treated in the biofilter for 10 months and the inlet ammonia and hydrogen sulfide concentrations were 0.1-1.5 and 2-20 ppmv, respectively. The removal efficiencies reached about 100% at the empty bed retention time (EBRT) of 3.6-5 seconds except for the adaptation periods. The pressure drop of the biofilter caused by the gas flow was also low that the maximum attained was 31 mm $H_2O$ during the operation. Its stability was confirmed in the long term due to the fact that the biofilter and the polyurethane medium had a minimum plugging and compression. The microbial community on the medium is critical for the performance of the biofilter especially the distribution of ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and sulfur oxidizing bacteria (SOB). The distribution of Nitrosomonas sp. (AOB) and Thiobacillus ferroxidans (SOB) was confirmed by FISH (fluorescence in situ hybridization) analysis. The longer the operation time, the more microbial population observed. Also, the medium close to the gas inlet had more microbial population than the medium at the gas outlet of the biofilter.
