In this study, cyclic tests of beam-column connections composed with members applicable to the domestic low-middle rise steel buildings were conducted to develop seismic connection details and its evaluation. Connection types and material properties of the steel were testing variables and the difference between the newly developed seismic rolled section (SHN490) and existing rolled section (SM490) was also investigated. Distributions of the yield strength and the ultimate strength of the SHN490 rolled section were relatively uniform comparing to those of the SM490 rolled section Brittle fracture in the weldments of the test specimens was not observed. Instead, fracture occurred at heat-affected zones or the stress-concentrated point near the weld access hole of the beam flanges. In the case of identical rolled-section specimens, the rotational capacity and dissipated energy of the WUF-W connection was larger than those of the WUF-B connection. In the case of identical connection types, the rotational capacity and dissipated energy of the SHN490 section connection was larger than those of the WUF-B section connection.

Recently, steel modular systems are developed and have been applied to the projects requiring fast construction such as military barracks and vertical expansion of school buildings. The existing modular system with standard module of ${6m\times3m}$ has a problem that many columns are duplicated in the module connection and the wall thickness increases. In this study, $12m{\times}3m$ module is proposed to solve this problem. Various types of beam-middle column connection which are essential for realizing the $12m{\times}3m$ module are proposed and their maximum load capacity and failure mode are analytically and experimentally evaluated. The comparison between analytical and experimental results shows that the maximum axial load and failure mode can be accurately estimated by finite element analysis. Some connection types which have higher failure load than the design load of the column, can be used as the beam-middle column connection detail of the $12m{\times}3m$ module.
The growing use of unprotected or partially protected steelwork in buildings has caused a lively debate regarding the safety of this form of construction. A good deal of recent research has indicated that steel members have a substantial inherent ability to resist fire so that additional fire protection can be either reduced or eliminated completely. A performance based philosophy also extends the study into the effect of structural continuity and the performance of the whole structural totality. As part of the structural system, thermal expansion during the heating phase or contraction during the cooling phase in most beams is likely to be restrained by adjacent parts of the whole system or sub-frame assembly due to compartmentation. This has not been properly addressed before. This paper describes an experimental programme in which unprotected steel beams were tested under load while it is restrained between two columns and additional horizontal restraints with particular concern on the effect of catenary action in the beams when subjected to large deflection at very high temperature. This paper also presents a three-dimensional mathematical modelling, based on the finite element method, of the series of fire tests on the part-frame. The complete analysis starts with an evaluation of temperature distribution in the structure at various time levels. It is followed by a detail 3-D finite element analysis on its structural response as a result of the changing temperature distribution. The principal part of the analysis makes use of an existing finite element package FEAST. The effect of columns being fire-protected and the beam being axially restrained has been modelled adequately in terms of their thermal and structural responses. The consequence of the beam being restrained is that the axial force in the restrained beam starts as a compression, which increases gradually up to a point when the material has deteriorated to such a level that the beam deflects excessively. The axial compression force drops rapidly and changes into a tension force leading to a catenary action, which slows down the beam deflection from running away. Design engineers will be benefited with the consideration of the catenary action.

The recent earthquake in Korea caused large and small damages to many school building. School building is an important building that is used as a shelter in the event of disaster. Among the seismic retrofit methods, the internal steel braced frame type method is used for its relatively easy construction and excellent performance. In this study, the maximum shear force and displacement were compared and examined by applying the brace frame to existing concrete school buildings. As a result, we verified the adequacy of the analytical model and compared and examined the effect of brace-height ratio on the span of the existing school buildings. The adequacy of the maximum shear force and displacement relationship can be confirmed in the model with a length of 0.3. In addition, seismic frame was applied to the actual non-seismic reinforced concrete school building, and the seismic performance was evaluated by nonlinear static analysis(Push-over analysis) according to the ratio of brace-height. As a result, the increase of the brace-height according to the brace-height ratio has the effect of increasing the maximum shear force and maximum load at the performance point. But the collapse of the braced frame due to the increase in the lateral stiffness occurred, indicating that seismic retrofit according to the proper brace-height is necessary. Therefore, in the seismic retrofit design of brace frame of existing school building, it is necessary to select the proper brace-height after retrofit analysis according to the brace-height ratio.

As online commerce increases, the construction of large logistics buildings worldwide is exploding. Most of these buildings have the characteristics of long span and heavy loaded and use precast concrete components, a pin joint structure, for rapid construction. However, due to construction safety and structural stability requirements, the pin joint structure has many limitations in terms of the erection of the PC member, which increases the time and cost. A structural frame connected with steel joints between precast concrete components, called a SMART frame, has been developed, which addresses these constraints and risks. However, the effect of the appllication of a SMART frame on the time aspect has not been analysed. The study is a time reduction effect analysis of a SMART frame for long span and heavy loaded logistics buildings. For this study, the authors select a case site erected using existing PC components, and compare the time reduction with the SMART frame erection simulations. Through this analysis, it was found that a time reduciton about 4 months, approximately 48% of the conventional PC installation period could be achieved. If the SMART frame is applied when carrying out future large-scale logistics building projects, it can be expected to have the effect of significantly shortening the construction period compared to the conventional method.
In designing a 300 meter high skyscraper expected to be the tallest building in Japan, an earthquake-ridden country, we launched on the full-scale performance based design to ensure redundancy and establish new specifications using below new techniques. The following new techniques are applied because the existing techniques/materials are not enough to meet the established design criteria for the large-scale, irregularly-shaped building, and earth-conscious material saving and construction streamlining for reconstructing a station building are also required: ${\bullet}$ High strength materials: Concrete filled steel tube ("CFT") columns made of high-strength concrete and steels; ${\bullet}$ New joint system: Combination of outer diaphragm and aluminium spray jointing; ${\bullet}$ Various dampers including corrugated steel-plate walls, rotational friction dampers, oil dampers, and inverted-pendulum adaptive tuned mass damper (ATMD): Installed as appropriate; and ${\bullet}$ Foundation system: Piled raft foundation, soil cement earth-retaining wall construction, and beer bottle shaped high-strength CFT piles.

This study aims at developing a new seismic resistant method by using precast concrete wall panels for existing low-rise, reinforced concrete beam-column buildings such as school buildings. Three quasi-static hysteresis loading tests were performed on one unreinforced beam-column specimen and two reinforced specimens with U-type precast wall panels. Top shear connection of the PC panel was required to show the composite strength of RC column and PC wall panel. However, the strength of the connection did not influence directly on the ultimate loading capacities of the specimens in the positive loading because the loaded RC column push the side of PC wall panel and it moved horizontally before the shear connector receive the concentrated shear force in the positive loading process. Under the positive loading sequence(push loading), the reinforced concrete column and PC panel showed flexural strength which is larger than 97% of the composite section because of the rigid binding at the top of precast panel. Similar load-deformation relationship and ultimated horizontal load capacities were shown in the test of PR1-LA and PR1-LP specimens because they have same section dimension and detail at the flexural critical section. An average of 4.7 times increase in the positive maximum loading(average 967kN) and 2.7 times increase in the negative maximum loading(average 592.5kN) had resulted from the test of seismic resistant specimens with anchored and welded steel plate connections than that of unreinforced beam-column specimen. The maximum drift ratios were also shown between 1.0% and 1.4%.

The bond between steel and concrete in reinforced concrete members is essential to resist external load, but the bond mechanism in reinforced concrete beams deteriorated by steel corrosion has not been clearly known yet. Most existing researches have dealt with the bond behavior of corroded steel under monotonic loading, but scarce are researches dealing with bond behavior of corroded steel under repeated loading. This study includes the experimental investigation on the bond behavior with respect to the various degrees of steel corrosion under repeated loading. According to the test results, the bond strength of corroded steel under monotonic loading increases as the rate of steel corrosion increases unless the splitting crack occurs. The slip versus number of load cycles relation was found to be approximately linear in double logarithmic scale, not only in specimens without steel corrosion but also in specimens with steel corrosion. The test results also show that the steel corrosion does not negatively affect the bond strength of corroded steel after repeated loading unless the splitting crack occurs. But the fatigue life decreases sharply after splitting crack occurs. This research will be helpful for the realistic durability design and condition assessment of reinforced concrete structures.

The vertical irregularities occurred in the structure may lessen the overall seismic capacity of the structure. Seismic capacity evaluation guidelines (e.g. FEMA 175, ATC-14) propose the criterion for the vertical irregularities of mass, stiffness and strength respectively. But, the criterion seems groundless and leads us to make a true/false decision only. This study is to draw a reasonable basis on which multi-level grading is possible based fur the evaluation of existing buildings. Time history analysis for 3-,5-, and 10-story steel frame structures has been performed using several earthquake data. ANN (Artificial Neural Network) is introduced to find the relative contribution factor of the irregularities along the irregular position. Also, the application system fur the seismic capacity evaluation can be established using the trained ANN.

This paper presents the results of experimental investigations on the response control performance of tuned liquid damper(TLD). Steel frame building model is used for the experiments. Shaking table is controled by velocity consol. Experimental variables are mass ratios(${\mu}=mass$ of TLD/mass of structure), shape ratio(depth of water/ length of TLD), number of nets(N) and tuned frequency ratio($f_l/f_s$). Results show that the greater the mass ratio is, the better the control performance is. So, it can be concluded that TLD is able to be used as a device of vibration control in the remodeling of existing buildings that are not designed to resist earthquake
