  • The exhaust system could be a dominant acoustical source in the passengers vehicle. It would be very important to obtain the acoustically good exhaust system, in order to control the cabin interior sound in automotive. In order to obtain the acoustically good exhaust system in automotive, many kinds of exhaust system should be measured, and simultaneously those results should be compared by the sound quality parameters. In this paper, in order to develop the methodology determining sound quality parameters, acoustic simulator is introduced, combining the time domain analysis and convolution analysis. As an example to verify the reliability of this method, several kinds of measurements are carried out, and the acoustically good exhaust system is selected, based on this proposed method.

  • Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis was carried out to investigate exhaust gas flow and acoustic characteristics in the exhaust system of a passenger car. Transient 3-dimensional flow field in the front and rear mufflers was simulated by CFD and far-field sound pressure was modeled by a simple monopole source method. Engine performance simulation was also performed to obtain the boundary condition of instantaneous fluid flow variation at the inlet of the exhaust system. Detailed exhaust gas flow characteristics such as velocity and pressure distribution inside the mufflers were presented and the pulsating pressure amplitude was compared at several positions in the exhaust system to deduce sound pressure level. The present method of the acoustic analysis coupled with CFD techniques would be very effective for the prediction of sound noise from vehicle exhaust systems although the effects of the inlet boundary condition and heat transfer on the accuracy of the prediction have to be validated through further studies.

  • Recently, creating a signature sound for a brand has become more important in the automotive industry. It is important to remember that the people inside a vehicle are not the only one, who assess the signature sound, exhaust sound has become a more important factor. Most research has used psycho-acoustic parameter to objectively measure the aesthetic qualities of exhaust sound. However, these results do not parallel the results from subjective analysis. Therefore, this research focused on developing a method for objective quantification to assess the aesthetic qualities of exhaust sound in order to help develop a more appealing signature sound. To do so, the actual exhaust sound was synthesized and subjectively assessed at varied frequencies samples of 30 individuals employed at sejong R&D center. The results were analyzed using the science of harmony scale.

  • In vehicle exhaust systems the sound attenuation and the reduction of flow losses are often two competing demands. The present study considers a fully vehicle exhaust system and investigates experimentally both the sound attenuation and the flow performance of production configurations including the catalyst, the resonator, and the muffler. Dynamometer experiments have been This study is on the development of a new muffler composed of a valve system using an elasticity of spring. The valve system conducted with the daewoo 1500cc Lanos engine with speeds ranging from 1000 to 5000 rpm. Measurements include the flow rates, the temperatures and the absolute dynamic pressures of the hot exhaust gases at point locations. The present study describes the experimental aspects of an ongoing effort to validate and use the nonlinear fluid dynamic models in the time-domain for the prediction of the acoustic and power performance of firing internal combustion engines with full production exhaust systems.

  • It is necessary to consider the stability, economic environmental-friendly problems by the development of the road, supply of the automobile, environmental problem as designing the exhaust system. To reduce the noise and the vibration of the automobile, it is needed to consider the pulsation noise, air current noise, vibration of air pipe which generate the intake and exhaust noise of the automobile. Moreover, the discharge sounds, intake sound, radiation sound, transmitted sound are occurred. To reduce this influence, the variable valve is needed and to control these factors, path transformation muffler and active type muffler are needed. While engine efficiency could be reduced with this transformationand resistance by the pressure, thermal property. In this study, how to design exhaust systems yielding higher condversion efficiency, lower backpressure and optimize the performance. this study is recommended for exhaust system and designers and engineers involved in SI engine exhaust system and it will furnish information for you to design more efficient.

  • In this paper, a sound quality indices for the evaluation of vehicle intake and exhaust noise were developed through a correlation analysis of objective measurement data and subjective evaluation data. At first, intake and exhaust orifice noise were measured at the wide-open throttle sweep condition. And then, acoustic transfer function between intake orifice noise and interior noise at the steady state condition was measured. Also, acoustic transfer function for exhaust system was measured as the same method. Simultaneously, subjective evaluation was carried out by the paired comparison and semantic differential method by 27 engineers. Next, the correlation analysis between the psycho-acoustic parameters derived from the measured data and the subjective evaluation was performed. The most critical factor was determined and the corresponding sound quality index for the intake and exhaust noise was obtained from the multiple factor regression method. At last, the effectiveness of the proposed index was investigated.

  • This study search for absorbing sound and exhaust-gas which aims to manufacture continuous void by using clay and foam, the surface of materials is covered with $TiO_{2}$ powder as heat treatment. According to the results of the experiment, the increase of thickness of manufactured sound absorbing materials caused the increase of absorption rate in the range of low and middle sound and thus it can be an important factor of improving absorption rate. Sound absorbing materials could satisfy 70% of the average of sound absorption ratio in 7cm thickness. Also, the manufactured sound absorbing materials is covered with $TiO_{2}$ showed an excellency in the clarification of exhaust-gas under ultraviolet rays treatment when 70% of removal rate and about 10% of generation rate of $NO_{2}$ is settled by the flow of 2 $\ell$/min NO gas. Especially, manufactured sound absorbing materials could improve compressive strength of continuos porous concrete. in the case of 7% bubble addition, when the substitution rate of coagulator was 30% and 20%, compressive strength was 45kgf/$cm^{2}$ and 65kgf/$cm^{2}$ respectively. As the substitution rate of coagulator reducing, compressive strength increased after preforming burnt clay.

  • It is often occurred that exhaust pipe of an internal combustion engine should be bent due to some geometrical constraints. Especially for automobiles most of exhaust pipes of engines have curvature to avoid rear axles. In this paper effects of pipe curvature on the exhaust noise of a diesel engine have been studied experimentally. Experiments were carried out on a 4-cycle, 2164cc diesel engine. Two types of curvature, circular arc and retangle, were tested. Sound pressure level (SPL) and power spectrum of the exhaust noise were measured by inserting bent pipes of different curvature dimensions into the exhaust pipe at various engine operating conditions. The following results were obtained from this study. Among the engine operating conditions the exhaust noise was affected mainly by engine revolution speed. The noise was reduced by the circular arc bent pipe. The effectiveness of an arc bent pipe on the noise reduction was dominated by its arc angle and the maximum noise reduction was obtained by the angle of 180.deg.. But the noise reduction could not be obtained by the rectangular bent pipe, and at high engine speed the noise was rather increased due to turbulence of exhaust gas.

  • In recent years, the driving performance and exhaust sound quality in automobiles have been recognized as important factors, as they maximize the driving fun to fulfil the demands of customers. Therefore, many automobile manufacturers are studying various exhaust pipe shapes to improve sound quality and optimize exhaust pressure. The objective of the exhaust pipe design is to maximize the engine efficiency using optimal exhaust pressure settings. In this study, an exhaust system was fabricated with different junction shapes, and the results were analyzed through various experiments. The exhaust gas pressure acting inside the exhaust pipe was measured using a pressure transducer. Meanwhile, the vibration generated in the vehicle was measured in three axial directions and analyzed. The ground noise generated in the indoor and outdoor of the vehicle was measured, and the noise generated at the maximum output was measured and analyzed.
