The objective of this study is to propose basic design guidelines for more effective air ventilation system in apartments. It is well known that ventilation depends on whether the room doors are open or closed as well as people's living patterns. This study considers 84 ㎡-sized apartment which has extended living room without balcony. Ventilation of bathroom and kitchen is not considered. The height of the building, external air pressure and air infiltration through the windows are also neglected. The regulation on indoor air quality made it mandatory that the air change per hour be more than 0.7. Four models are suggested to study the effect of open and closed doors. Models 1 and 3 are open door types and models 2 and 4 are closed door types. The open types have 50 mm hole near the top of the door to substitute exhaust outlet. The ventilation effectiveness was evaluated by 3-dimensional numerical simulation using finite volume method by a commercial software. This work compares air flow, temperature of air, age of air and the efficiency of ventilation of apartments with wooden doors of bedroom 1 and 2, which are open or closed.
The diagnosis studies of the process of chemical vapor deposition were carried out by using in-situ particle monitor (ISPM) and self-plasma optical emission spectroscopy (SPOES). We used the two kinds of equipments such as the silicon plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition system with silane gas and the borophosphosilicate glass depositon system for monitoring. Using two sensors, we tried to verify the diagnostic and in-situ sensing ability of by-product gases and contaminant particles at the deposition and cleaning steps. The processes were controlled as a function of precess temperature, operating pressure, plasma power, etc. and two sensors were installed at the exhaust line and contiguous with each other. the correlation of data (by-product species and particles) measured by sensors were also investigated.

Hydrogen is evaluated as one of new energy sources that can overcome the limitations and pollution problems of conventional fossil fuels. Although hydrogen is free from CO2, attention is required in NOx emission and flame stability in order to use hydrogen in existing gas fuel system. This study investigates the differences in operating characteristics and its problems to be modified when the hydrogen is used as fuel for existing domestic boilers and new heat recover boilers with water spray. When the hydrogen is used in domestic boilers, the efficiency is about 6-7% lower than methane due to higher partial vapor pressure in the exhaust gas at usual operating conditions above 60℃ in combustion chamber outlet temperature. On the other hand, the heat recovery boiler with water spray (HR-B/WS-X) is expected to achieve up to 95% efficiency, which is 12% more efficient than conventional boilers. It can also significantly reduce NOx emission by lowering the flame temperature.
This study presents both experimental and numerical investigation of ignition delay time of n-heptane and n-butanol binary fuel. The $O_2$ concentration in the mixture was set to 9-10% to make high exhaust gas recirculation( EGR) rate condition which leads low NOx and soot emission. Experiments were performed using a rapid compression machine(RCM) at compressed pressure 20bar, several compressed temperature and three equivalence ratios(0.4, 1.0, 1.5). In addition, a numerical study on the ignition delay time was performed using CHEMKIN codes to validate experimental results and predict chemical species in the combustion process. The results showed that the ignition delay time increased with increasing the n-butanol fraction due to a decrease of oxidation of n-heptane at the low temperature. Moreover, all of the binary fuel mixtures showed the combustion characteristics of n-heptane such as cool flame mode at low temperature and negative-temperature-coefficient(NTC) behavior. Due to the effect of high EGR rate condition, the operating region is reduced at lean condition and the ignition delay time sharply increased compared with no EGR condition.

Currently, due to the serious world-wide air pollution by substances emitted from vehicles, emission control is enforced more firmly and it is expected that the regulation requirements for emission will become more severe. A new concept combustion technology that can reduce the NOx and PM in relation to combustion is urgently required. Due to such social requirement, technologically advanced countries are making efforts to develop an environment-friendly vehicle engine at the nation-wide level in order to respond to the reinforced emission control. As a core combustion technology among new combustion technologies for the next generation engine, the homogenous charge compression ignition(HCCI) is expanding its application range by adopting multiple combustion mode, catalyst, direct fuel injection and partially premixed combustion. This study used a 2-staged injection method in order to apply the HCCI combustion method without significantly altering engine specifications in the aspect of multiple combustion mode and practicality by referring to the results of studies on the HCCI engine. In addition, this study confirmed the possibility of securing optimum fuel economy emission reduction in the IMEP 8bar range(which could not be achieved with existing partially premixed combustion) through forced charging, exhaust gas recirculation(EGR), compression ratio change and application of DOC catalyst.
This study was carried out to determine necessary conditions for optimal ventilation of small windowless piglet house (4.0 (W) $\times$ 11.0 (L) $\times$ 2.6(H) m) with corridor and attic for preheating using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulation. The experimental weaning piglet house was consisted of a corridor, an attic, 4 rooms (3.0 (W) $\times$ 2.75(L) m), 3 fences (0.7(H) m), 5 air inlets and 2 exhaust fans (0.4 (D) m) and simulated using CFD code, FLUENT. The simulation results for the experimental weaning piglet house showed that each room was uniformly ventilated under all the experimental conditions and air velocities at 0.1 m above floor are less than 0.15 m/s for 0.75 m/s and 1.0 m/s of air inlet velocity but 0.61 m/s for 1.25 m/s. The simulation results are similar to the measured results. Considering the air flow pattern, ventilating efficiency, air velocity at 0.1 m above floor and cold stress of weaning piglets and so on, the optimum velocity of air inlet might be 1.0 m/s.
This study assessed the performance of a compact heat exchanger with staggered tube banks for recuperation of high temperature exhaust thermal energy for SOFC fuel cell system. The compact heat exchanger in this study is two pass system which consists of $315{\times}202.5{\times}48.5mm^3$ and 132 tubes of $6.0mm{\Phi}$ for each heat exchanger. From experiments of the 2 pass heat exchanger system, air temperature was increased from $60{\sim}85^{\circ}C$ to $402{\sim}482^{\circ}C$ while gas temperature was decreased from $600^{\circ}C$ to $305{\sim}402^{\circ}C$ according to mass flow rates of 3.9~7.8 g/s. The experimental heat transfer rates of the heat exchanger were compared with CFD numerical solutions with the conventional ${\xi}-NTU$ method. From the comparisons, the following conclusions were obtained. For the heat exchanger system, the relative errors of heat transfer rate by CFD solution were from 7.1 to 27%, and those by ${\xi}-NTU$ method were from 0.6% to 21% compared with experimental data. From the comparisons, it can be said that both of CFD and ${\xi}-NTU$ method almost simulated to experimental data except specific conditions. Pressure drops through air tubes and gas passages were calculated with both of the CFD computation and head loss equations. The differences between them were from 14 to 22%.

It is essential to understand the characteristics of gas turbine components in order to carry out an off-design analysis of a gas turbine engine. In this study, a micro gas turbine engine test system was constructed to understand the performance characteristics of gas turbines. The temperature and pressure in the flow path of the micro gas turbine was collected by measuring the engine spool speed, and a compressor map was constructed by using the experimental data. The exhaust gas was collected at the turbine outlet and the combustion efficiency was calculated. An off-design performance analysis at ground static was performed using GasTurb software by applying the compressor map and combustion efficiency obtained from the experimental data. Futhermore, we compared and evaluated the analysis results with engine operating data.
Background: Meta-analyses have shown firefighters to be at an increased risk of several cancer types. Occupational carcinogen exposure may explain these increased risks. This study aims to describe Norwegian fire departments' work conditions from 1950 until today, focusing on factors relevant for potential occupational carcinogen exposure. Methods: With the help of a reference group, we developed a questionnaire on topics related to occupational exposure to carcinogens for the period 1950-2018. Selected Norwegian fire departments provided department-specific responses. Results: Sixteen departments, providing fire services for 48% of the Norwegian population as of 2019 and mainly consisting of professional firefighters, responded to our questionnaire. The introduction of synthetic firefighting foams, more regular live fire training, the introduction of chemical diving, and a higher number of diesel-driven fire service vehicles were identified as changes thought to increase exposure to occupational carcinogens. Changes thought to decrease exposure included the switch from negative to positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatuses, the use of self-contained breathing apparatuses during all phases of firefighting, the use of ventilating fans during firefighting, increased attention to flammable materials used during live fire training, increased attention to handling and cleaning of turnout gear and other equipment, and installment of exhaust removal systems in apparatus bays. Conclusion: Norwegian fire departments' work conditions have seen several changes since 1950, and this could influence firefighters' occupational carcinogen exposure. A peak of carcinogen exposure may have occurred in the 1970s and 1980s before recent changes have reduced exposure.

In this study, 5-axis machining was proposed as a method for manufacturing a nozzle with a curved shape, and flow analysis and structural analysis were used for structural validation of the manufactured geometry. The program used for CFD obtained the internal temperature and pressure distribution of the nozzle using STAR-CCM+ and used it as the boundary condition for structural analysis. For structural analysis, the commercial program NASTRAN was used, and stress was calculated using the von-mises technique. Based on the maximum stress value generated, the safety margin was 0.78 and the safety margin of the bearing stress was 46.8. In addition, the creep life was calculated as 9.97 x 1012 hours using the Larson-Miller parametric method and applying the maximum stress value of 187 MPa and the exhaust gas perfectly mixed temperature of 463 K.
