턱 당김 운동이 무릎 굽힘폄의 근 수행력에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Muscle performance on knee flexion / extension by chin in exercise)

  • Background: The purpose of the present study is to report the effect of muscle performance on knee flexion and extension by chin in exercise. Methods: This study was Participated in 10 healthy subjects. For conducting the chin-in exercise, subjects are lay down with supine position. Using the rounded towel, subjects was performed contraction of longus colli and longus capatis muscle by push the towel. Chin-in exercise was conducted 3 times a day, 4 times a week for 4 weeks. By using the Biodex system4, We measured absolute muscle strength, relative muscle strength, total exercise quantity and average rate of production in knee flexion and extension. The data was analyzed by the repeated-measure ANOVA for comparing before, after exercise 2 weeks, after exercise 4 weeks changes of factors. Results: After chin-in exercise, there was significant difference of before, after 2 weeks and 4weeks results in absolute muscle strength, relative muscle strength, total exercise quantity, average rate of production, agonist/antagonist ratio(p<.05). Conclusion: As a results of this study, chin-in exercise may help to improve muscle ability of knee joint activation and knee joint action performance.

The Effects of Bridge Exercise with One Hip Joint Adduction on Trunk Muscle Thickness

  • Purpose: This study aimed to verify the effects of bridge exercise with resistance to one hip joint adductor muscle on the thickness of external and internal oblique abdominal muscles, transversus abdominis muscle, and erector spinae muscle. Methods: The subjects were divided into two exercise groups: 15 for Bridge Exercise Group (BEG) and 15 for One Hip joint Adduction Bridge Exercise Group (OHABEG). The study used an ultrasonic instrument to measure trunk muscle thickness. OHABEG performed a bridge exercise with one hip Joint adduction. BEG performed a bridge exercise without resistance. Results: The external oblique abdominal, internal oblique abdominal, and the transversus abdominis muscles showed a significant increase by period and time in intra-group interactions (p<0.05), while there was no significant difference in inter-group changes (p>0.05). The erector spinae muscle had a significant increase in each period (p<0.05) but no significant difference in time, intra-group interactions, and in inter-group changes (p>0.05). Conclusion: These results demonstrated that bridge exercise with one hip joint adduction had positive effects on trunk muscle thickness. These results confirm that a bridge exercise with one hip joint adduction has a positive effect on the muscle thickness of trunk, suggesting the possibility of using it as a rehabilitation treatment for a lumbar stabilization exercise and as a basic data.

세라밴드 운동이 여성노인의 유연성, 평형성, 근력에 미치는 효과 (The Effect of Thera Band Exercise on Muscle Flexibility, Balance Ability, Muscle Strength in Elderly Women)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of thera band exercise on muscle flexibility, balance ability, muscle strength and self-rated health in elderly women. Methods: The quasi-experimental research design (one-group pretest-post test) was employed. Participants were recruited in S-city and a total of 14 elderly women completed 15-week thera band exercise. Descriptive statistics, paired t-test and McNemar-test were used in data analysis by SPSS/WIN 12.0. Results: Compared with those before participation, the participants showed higher muscle flexibility, balance ability, and muscle strength after participation in thera band exercise. Conclusion: Findings of this study indicated that the 15-week thera band exercise program had a favorable effect on muscle flexibility, balance ability and muscle strength of elderly women. Future research needs to develop combined exercise programs with other types of exercise for the health of elderly women.

열린사슬운동 및 닫힌사슬운동에서 위팔굽힘 각도에 따른 앞톱니근의 근활성도 비교 (A Comparison of the Serratus Anterior Muscle Activity according to the Shoulder Flexion Angles in a Closed Kinetic Chain Exercise and an Open Kinetic Chain Exercise)

  • PURPOSE: The purpose of present study was to ascertain how the activity of the serratus anterior muscle, the upper trapezius muscle and the pectoral major muscle was affected while the upper arm was being flexed at 70, 90 and 110 degrees respectively in a closed kinetic chain exercise (wall push up plus) and an open kinetic chain exercise (static hug). METHODS: Sixteen healthy young men subjects participated in the study. Surface electromyography (EMG) data were collected from the dominant-side muscles during a closed kinetic chain exercise and an open kinetic chain exercise. The activity of each muscle was measured quantitatively, and by the use of the two-way repeated ANOVA, the data were compared with each other according to exercises and shoulder flexion angles. RESULTS: Results indicated that the closed kinetic chain exercise did not interact with the open kinetic chain exercise (p>.05). In both the closed kinetic chain exercise and the open kinetic chain exercise, the activity of the serratus anterior muscle became different significantly according to angles (p<.05). Its activity increased in order of 70, 90 and 110 degrees (p<.05). In both exercises and all angles, muscle activity was significantly higher in the serratus anterior muscle than in the upper trapezius muscle and the pectoral major muscle (p<.05). CONCLUSION: The above results show that there is a need to selectively control the exercise stress of the serratus anterior muscle in the case of the patients with the shoulder impingement syndrome characterized by the winged scapula, insufficient scapular protraction and upward rotation.

Clinical Availability of Unstable Support Surface During Bridge Exercise for Training Core muscles

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of change in the unstable support surface location during bridge exercise on the muscle activity of erector spinae and gluteus maximus. Research design, data and methodology: 12 healthy participants aged 23.32 ±1.02 were measured muscle activities of erector spinae and gluteus maximus during bridge exercise and compared between the exercise conditions; unstable support surface located on upper back and feet during bridge exercise. Paired t-test was performed to identify whether there was a significant difference in the muscle activities between the exercise conditions. Results: As a result, even though higher levels of the averaged muscle activities of both erector spinae and gluteus maximus during exercise in unstable support surface located on feet than upper back were observed, no significant differences were found. Conclusions: The change of unstable support surface location during bridge exercise for low back pain rehabilitation would be more appropriate to be used to increase levels of tension of muscle activities and train fine motor control rather than to strengthening muscle strength.

Effects of Heat Treatment and Rest-inserted Exercise on Muscle Activity

  • Prolonged immobilization leads to significant weakness and atrophy of the skeletal muscle and can also impair the recovery of muscle strength following injury. Therefore, it is important to minimize the period under immobilization and accelerate the return to normal activity. This study examined the effects of combined heat treatment and rest-inserted exercise on the muscle activity of the lower limb during knee flexion/extension. Twelve healthy subjects were assigned to 4 groups that included: (1) heat treatment + rest-inserted exercise; (2) heat treatment + continuous exercise; (3) no heat treatment + rest-inserted exercise; and (4) no heat treatment + continuous exercise. Heat treatment was applied for 15 mins prior to exercise. Continuous exercise groups performed knee flexion/extension at 0.5 Hz for 300 cycles without rest whereas rest-inserted exercise groups performed the same exercise but with 2 mins rest inserted every 60 cycles of continuous exercise. Changes in the rectus femoris and hamstring muscle activities were assessed at 0 and 2 weeks of treatment by measuring the electromyography signals of isokinetic maximum voluntary contraction. Significant increases in both the rectus femoris and hamstring muscles were observed after only 2 weeks of treatment when both heat treatment and rest-inserted exercise were performed. These results suggest that combination of various treatment techniques, such as heat treatment and rest-inserted exercise, may accelerate the recovery of muscle strength following injury or immobilization.

퇴행성슬관절염 여성노인의 운동과 테이핑이 근력과 골밀도, 혈중 IGF-1에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of Exercise with Taping on Muscle Strength and Bone Mineral Density, IGF-1 in Blood of Elderly Women)

  • Purpose : This study was to explore the effects of knee joint taping exercise on muscle strength, bone mineral density, pain and IGF-1 in blood of elderly women with knee Osteoarthritis. Methods : Thirty elderly women with knee osteoarthritis were divided into three groups: the taping with exercise group (n=10), the regular exercise group (n=10) and control group (n=10). Participants' muscle strength, bone mineral density, pain and IGF-1 in blood were measured three times : before exercise, after 6 weeks, and after 12 weeks. Results : Participants in both exercise (taping & non-taping) groups showed improvement in muscle strength, bone mineral density, pain and IGF-1 in blood after 6 and 12 weeks compared to before exercise. In particular, the taping exercise group had a greater effect on muscle strength than the regular exercise group. Conclusion : Both exercise programs considerably improved muscle strength, bone mineral density, reduced pain and IGF-1 in blood in elderly women with knee Osteoarthritis. The knee joint taping exercise is perhaps a better exercise to improve muscle strength than the regular exercise in treating elderly women with knee Osteoarthritis

Comparison of Muscle Activities of Trunk and Lower Limb during Bow and Squat Exercises

  • Purpose: The purposes of this study were to examine muscle activities of trunk and lower limb during squat and 108 bows exercises and to provide objective data for establishing a training method for improving muscle strength of trunk and lower limb. Methods: Twenty normal healthy subjects participated in this study. Each exercise was divided into five periods. Muscle activities of trunk and lower limb in each period of both 108 bows and squat exercises were measured and analyzed by independent t-test. Results: In starting, mid-flexion, mid-extension, and end period muscle activities obtained from 108 bows exercise were significantly higher than those from squat exercise. However, in the final flexion period, muscle activities of multifidus, elector spinae, rectus femoris, biceps femoris, and tibialis anterior from squat exercise were significantly higher than those from bow exercise. Conclusion: In this study, high muscle activities in most muscles of trunk and lower limb were observed from all periods of 108 bows exercise except the final flexion period. Therefore, it is likely that 108 bows exercise rather than squat exercise is more suitable for high strength exercise to improve muscle strength of trunk and lower limb and thus will be applicable for strengthening muscles of trunk and lower limb of patients.

호흡근훈련 유무에 따른 안정화 운동이 건강한 성인의 호흡 기능과 자세 동요에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Stabilization Exercise with and without Respiratory Muscle Training on Respiratory Function and Postural Sway in Healthy Adults)

  • Purpose : Stabilization exercise and respiratory muscle training are used to train trunk muscles that affect postural control and respiratory function. However, there have been no studies that combine stabilization exercise and respiratory muscle training. The purpose of this study is to investigate effects of stabilization exercise with and without respiratory muscle training on respiratory function and postural sway. Methods : Fifteen healthy adults were recruited for this experiment. All the subjects performed stabilization exercise with and without respiratory muscle training. For stabilization exercise with respiratory muscle training, the subjects sat on a gym ball wearing a stretch sensor. The subjects inspire maximally as long as possible during lifting one foot off the ground, alternately for 30 seconds. The stretch sensor was placed on both anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS), and the stretch sensor was used to monitor inspiration. For stabilization exercise without respiratory muscle training, the subjects sat on a gym ball and lifted one foot off the ground, without respiratory muscle training. Kinovea program used to investigate postural sway tracking during exercise. The maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP) and maximum expiratory pressure (MEP) were measured using a spirometer to investigate changes of respiratory muscle strength before and after exercise. A paired t-test was used to determine significant differences postural sway tracking, MIP, and MEP between stabilization exercise with and without respiratory muscle training. Results : There were significantly lower a distance of postural sway tracking during stabilization exercise with respiratory muscle training, compared with stabilization exercise without respiratory muscle training (p<.05). The MIP and MEP were significantly increased after stabilization exercise with respiratory muscle training compared with before stabilization exercise with respiratory muscle trianing (p<.05). Conclusion : The results of this study suggest that stabilization exercise with repiratory muscle training would be recommended to improve postural control and respiratory muscle strength.

Effect of ginger extract ingestion on skeletal muscle glycogen contents and endurance exercise in male rats

  • [Purpose] Skeletal muscle glycogen is a determinant of endurance capacity for some athletes. Ginger is well known to possess nutritional effects, such as anti-diabetic effects. We hypothesized that ginger extract (GE) ingestion increases skeletal muscle glycogen by enhancing fat oxidation. Thus, we investigated the effect of GE ingestion on exercise capacity, skeletal muscle glycogen, and certain blood metabolites in exercised rats. [Methods] First, we evaluated the influence of GE ingestion on body weight and elevation of exercise performance in rats fed with different volumes of GE. Next, we measured the skeletal muscle glycogen content and free fatty acid (FFA) levels in GE-fed rats. Finally, we demonstrated that GE ingestion contributes to endurance capacity during intermittent exercise to exhaustion. [Results] We confirmed that GE ingestion increased exercise performance (p<0.05) and elevated the skeletal muscle glycogen content compared to the nonGE-fed (CE, control exercise) group before exercise (Soleus: p<0.01, Plantaris: p<0.01, Gastrocnemius: p<0.05). Blood FFA levels in the GE group were significantly higher than those in the CE group after exercise (p<0.05). Moreover, we demonstrated that exercise capacity was maintained in the CE group during intermittent exercise (p<0.05). [Conclusion] These findings indicate that GE ingestion increases skeletal muscle glycogen content and exercise performance through the upregulation of fat oxidation.
