In this paper, we propose a new excitation enhancement technique to improve the speech quality of low bit-rate code-excited linear prediction (CELP) coders. The proposed technique is based on a harmonic model and it is employed only in the decoding process of speech coders without any additional bits. We develop the procedure of harmonic model parameter estimation and harmonic generation, and apply this technique to a current state-of-the-art low bit rate speech coder, ITU-T G.729 Annex D. Also, its performance is measured by using the ITU-T P.862 PESQ score and compared to those of the phase dispersion filter and the long-term postfilter applied to the decoded excitation. It is shown that the proposed excitation enhancement technique can improve the quality of decoded speech and provide better quality for male speech than other techniques.
An experimental investigation has been made with the objective of studying the limits of equivalence ratio on mixing enhancement in a tone excited jet flame. The jet is pulsed by means of a loudspeaker-driven cavity and rich flames(${\phi}>1.5$) are used. The excitation frequency is chosen for the resonant frequency identified as a pipe resonance due to acoustic excitation. Methane, propane and butane are used to examine the effect of mixture property on the limit of equivalence ratio. Mixing is always enhanced in a methane/air flame as the excitation intensity increases. Constant lower limits of equivalence ratio for mixing enhancement are present in cases of propane/air and butane/air flames irrespective of mean mixture velocities. The equivalence ratio limits are also found to be related to the flame instability ; the lower Le, the higher the limit of equivalence ratio. Under the equivalence ratio limits, cellular flames are generated as the excitation intensity increases. The amplitude of oscillating velocity for generating a cellular flame in the equivalence ratio limit is proportional to a mean mixture velocity irrespective of fuels.
In this paper, we propose a new excitation enhancement technique to improve the speech quality of low bit rate speech coders. The proposed technique is based on a harmonic model and it is employed only in the decoding process of speech coders without any additional bits. We develop the procedure of harmonic model parameters estimation and harmonic generation. and apply the technique to a current state of the art low bit rate speech coder, ITU-T G.729 Annex D. Also its performance is measured by using the ITU-T P.862 PESQ score and compared to those of the phase dispersion filter and the long-term postfilter applied to the decoded excitation. It is shown that the proposed excitation enhancement technique can improve the quality of decoded speech and provide better quality for male speech than other techniques.
This study is aimed to the numerical modeling of the surface plasmon-polariton excitation by a layer of active (electrically pumped) quantum dots embedded in a semiconductor, covered with a metal. It is shown that this excitation becomes much more efficient if the metal has a form of a thin (with thickness of several nanometers) film. The cause of this enhancement in comparison with a thick covering metal film is the partial surface plasmon-polariton localized at the metal-semiconductor interface penetration into air. In result the real part of the metal+air half-space effective dielectric function becomes closer (in absolute value) to the real part of the semiconductor dielectric function than in the case of a thick covering metal film. This leads to approaching the point of the surface plasmon-polariton resonance (where absolute values of these parts coincide) and, therefore, the enhancement of the surface plasmon-polariton excitation. The calculations were made for a particular example of InAs quantum dot layer embedded in GaAs matrix covered with an Au film. Its results indicate that for the 10 nm Au film the rate of this excitation becomes by 2.5 times, and for the 5 nm Au film - by 6-7 times larger than in the case of a thick (40 nm or more) Au film.
The effects of acoustic excitation of coaxial air on mixing enhancement and reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx) emission were investigated. A compression driver was attached to the coaxial air supply tube to impose excitation. Measurements of NOx emission with frequency sweeping were performed to observe the trend of NOx emission according to the fuel and air flow conditions and to inquire about the effective excitation frequency for reducing NOx. Then, Schlieren photographs were taken to visualize the flow field and to study the effect of excitation. In addition, phase-locked particle image velocimetry (PIV) was performed to acquire velocity field for each case and to investigate the effect of vortices more clearly. Direct photographs and OH chemiluminescence photographs were taken to study the variation of flame length and reaction zone. It was found that acoustic forcing frequencies close to the resonance frequencies of coaxial air supply tube could reduce NOx emission. This NOx reduction was influenced by mixing enhancement due to large-scale vortices formed by fluctuation of coaxial air jet velocity.

The purpose of this investigation is to explore the possibility of using artificial mechanical means for excitation of shear layers with application in swirling jet mixing enhancement. For this purpose, a mechanical excitation device was designed and fabricated. The major system components consist of two subsonic nozzles, one swirl generator, and the excitation device. The experiments were carried out at various helical excitation modes; i.e., m=+0, m=$\pm$1, m=$\pm$2, m=$\pm$3, and m=$\pm$4. Axial mean velocity measurements were made with plane and helical wave excitation using a hot-wire anemometer. The results are compared with the baseline (plane-wave excitation) at various helical modes. The acquired data is presented in 3-D mesh plots and 2-D contour plots. It was observed that new device was effective in excitation of the helical instability waves and resulting in mixing enhancement of the swirling jet.

The effect the diameter of silver nanorod arrays whose distance between the nanorods was uniform at 65 nm have on Surface-enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) has been studied by varying the diameter from 28 to 51 nm. Nanorod length was fixed at approximately 62 nm, which is the optimum length for SERS by excitation with a 632.8 nm laser line. The transverse and longitudinal modes of the surface plasmon of these silver nanorods were near 400 and 630 nm, respectively. The extinction of the longitudinal mode increased with increasing nanorod diameter, while the transverse mode did not change significantly. High-quality SERS spectra of p-aminothiophenol and benzenethiol adsorbed on the tips of the silver nanorods were observed by excitation with a 632.8 nm laser line. The SERS enhancement increased with increasing nanorod diameter. We concluded that the SERS enhancement increases when the diameter of silver nanorods is increased mainly by increasing the excitation efficiency of the longitudinal mode. The enhancement factor for the silver nanorods with a 51 nm diameter was approximately $2{\times}10^7$.

Raman spectra of a single layer graphene sheet placed in different gold substrates were obtained and are discussed in the context of surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The gold substrates were composed of a combination of a thermally deposited gold film and a close-packed gold nanosphere layer. The SERS effects were negligible when the excitation wavelength was 514 nm, while the Raman signals were enhanced 3-to 50-fold when the excitation wavelength was 633 nm. The large SERS enhancement accompanied a spectral distortion with appearance of several unidentifiable peaks, as well as enhancement of a broadened D peak. These phenomena are interpreted as the local field enhancement in the nanostructure of the gold substrates. The difference in the enhancement factors among the various gold substrates is explained with a model in which the spatial distribution and polarization of the local field and the orientation of the inserted graphene sheet are considered important.
Measurements of flame length, width and NOx emissions have been conducted to investigate the effect of an acoustic excitation on flame structure in turbulent hydrogen diffusion flames with coaxial air. The resonance frequency of oscillations was varied between 259 ,514 and 728 Hz with power rate of 0.405 and 2.88w. When these frequencies imposed to hydrogen flames, dramatic reduction of flame length and NOx emission was achieved. And acetone planar laser-induced fluorescence technique was used to measure a concentration of the near field of driven axisymmetric jet. The air-fuel stoichiometric line was plotted to investigate the mixing layer and development of air entrainment to fuel jet. Consequently, acoustic excitation on flame could enhance the air-fuel mixing resulting in abatement of NOx emission quantitatively.

This paper presents a new approach to Thyristor Controlled Phase Shifter (TCPS) control. In this paper we have proposed a nonlinear coordinated generator excitation and TCPS controller to enhance the transient stability of a power system. The proposed controller is able to control three main parameters affecting a.c. power transmission: namely excitation voltage, phase angle and reactance in a coordinated manner. The TCPS is located at the midpoint of the transmission line. A nonlinear feedback control law is proposed to linearize and decouple the power system. The design of the proposed controller is based on the local measurements only. Simulation results have been shown to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller for the enhancement of transient stability of the power system under a large sudden fault.
