The purpose of this study was to explore the use of music for alleviating PTSD symptoms among North Korean resettlers. Out of 80 initial responses from North Korean resettlers living in Seoul metropolitan area, 78 surveys were analyzed. The questionnaire focused on traumatic events encountered, PTSD symptoms experienced, and the use of music in relation to the symptoms. The analysis revealed that all participants had been exposed to traumatic events either directly or indirectly, and 32% of the responders have experienced at least one of the PTSD symptoms in the last one month. Most of the participants perceived music to be necessary in everyday life as well as for managing PTSD related symptoms. On the other hand, only 38% actually use music in everyday life whereas 75% use music for managing PTSD symptoms. They mainly listen to music but also engage in singing, utilize music from both North and South Korea, and they perceive the most important reason for using music to be for emotional comfort and transition. The analysis provides additional information that are valuable for the therapeutic use of music for North Korean resettlers living with PTSD symptoms.

Electrical energy is playing an increasingly vital role as the primary energy source in everyday life. With the increase in electric power consumption, power facilities are under an increasing stress and must operate at a high capacity. Consequently, the demand for electric power cables in power transmission and distribution lines is rapidly increasing. Underground distribution lines have been steadily replacing the aboveground lines owing to the increase in electric power demand and the need to increase the supply voltage. In addition to line damage, worker safety is of primary concern in this type of underground infrastructure. In this study, to improve the safety of workers dealing with underground transmission lines, we analyzed the electromagnetic field generated around the distribution line and determined the basic criteria for developing a device that can detect a live underground line.
Objectives: This study was performed to examine dietary habits, life stress, and nutrition knowledge among high school students in Gyeonggi area. Methods: A total of 431 high school students (210 males, 221 females) in Gyeonggi area participated in this study from November to December of 2011. The study was a questionnaire-based survey that included dietary habits, dietary attitudes, life stress, and nutrition knowledge. Results: Body weight, height, and body mass index were all higher in male students than in female students (P < 0.001, respectively). For dietary habits, the average score (P < 0.01) and scores for considering combination of food groups (P < 0.05), eating green and orange vegetables (P < 0.05), eating meat, fish, eggs, or beans everyday (P < 0.05), drinking milk (P < 0.001), and eating seaweed (P < 0.01) were higher in male students than in female students. For dietary attitudes, the average score (P < 0.05) and scores for the five items were significantly different between male and female students. Male students showed a significantly lower nutrition knowledge score than female students (P < 0.05). Life stress score of students largely was attributable to academic factors, and female students showed higher stress score for academic, personal, and surrounding environmental (P < 0.05, respectively) factors than male students. Dietary habit score (P < 0.01) and nutrition knowledge score (P < 0.05) in female students as well as dietary attitude score (P < 0.05) in male students were negatively correlated with life stress score. Dietary habit scores in male and female students were positively correlated with dietary attitude score (P < 0.01, respectively). Need for nutrition education was significantly higher in female students than in male students (P < 0.05). Conclusions: This study provides basic information on dietary habits, dietary attitudes, life stress, and nutrition knowledge according to sex and suggests gender-specific practical nutrition education programs to address undesirable dietary habits and attitudes in students with higher stress levels.
This study is aimed at figuring out the stress of workers in the field of railroad electricity and vehicles and its convergence factors. The workers were divided into the workers in the headquarters and in the field. A self-administered survey was conducted from February 9 to March 6 in 2015. 628 respondents' reply was analyzed by PASW Statistics Ver. 18.0. As the result, 94.7% of them belonged to the over weight group and frequently drank alcohol. The stress score was higher in the workers in the headquarters(3.00/5.00) than those in the field(2.85). For the workers in the headquarters, those who smoke everyday showed higher stress level than that of those who have never smoked while stress level decreased in those who are satisfied with their company life. For the workers in the field, stress increased in the higher age group than those in their the twenties and those who skip their breakfast. The more positive their subjective awareness toward their body shape and the more satisfied they were with their company life, the more their stress level decreased. Therefore, the study suggests that we have to focus on those who are vulnerable to stress using the factors.
The purpose of this study is to examine everyday emotional experience of urban elderly in Korea. Specifically, this study explores gender differences in the effect of place/location of activity and companionship on the daily emotional experience. Data were collected from 148 urban elderly (men=76, women=72) in Seoul, using Experience Sampling Method(ESM). The unit of analysis was the self-report and in total 5,530 self-reports were provided. The statistical methods used for the data analyses were descriptive statistics, t-test, χ2 verification, and ANOVA. The major findings are as follows. First, the elderly in Korea spend a quite substantial portion of their time at home, and they spend the largest share of their time in company with their spouse. Second, women report higher intensity of stress and irritation than men in terms of overall emotional experience. Third, the effect of activity location and companionship on emotional experience turned out to be different depending on gender. Emotional experience of daily lives and overall quality of life are shown to be inter-related. Based on these findings, this study provides a significant implication that situational contexts of experience should be considered in order to understand the daily emotional experience of the contemporary Korean elderly.
This study investigated the post-divorce adjustment level, by focusing on life satisfaction, health, stress and resource factors, for divorced men and women in their 20s and 30s. Also, it examined how these factors affect life satisfaction and health. For this empirical analysis, data were collected from 114 divorced men and 112 divorced women, living in the Seoul metropolitan area, from 23rd Sep. to 20th Oct., 2002. The questionnaire for the survey dealt with demographic information, life satisfaction, health, stress and resource factor scales. The major findings of the research project were as follows.: first, the life satisfaction and health levels of the divorced men and women were low. Especially, divorced women had more physical and psychological problems than men. Second, the divorced men's satisfaction was affected by pre-divorce life events and education level, whereas the divorced women's satisfaction was affected by subjective economic dissatisfaction, pre-divorce tfe events, everyday life level when they were divorced, and social support. Finally, the attitude toward divorce of significant others and pre-divorce life events were important variables for the divorced men's health, whereas attachment toward ex-spouse, pre-divorce life events, pre-divorce marital conflict and social support were affectable variables for the divorced women's health. The results of current research are expected to contribute to the divorce adjustment programs according to gender.
Background and objective: Various images from visual display terminals (VDTs) as well as living lighting are important parts of our daily life; thus, properly controlling the lighting environment - that is, illuminance, color temperature and good images from VDTs - can have a substantial effect on improving the mental health and work efficiency in everyday life. We examined electroencephalography (EEG) and heart rate variability (HRV) responses to various lighting conditions in 25 university students as they viewed images of a green landscape or traffic congestion. Methods: EEG was performed in darkness and when the room was illuminated with 10 different light-emitting diode (LED) color temperatures, while the EEG and HRV responses to green landscape or traffic congestion image stimuli were measured in darkness and during room illumination with three different LED color temperatures. Results: We found a significant difference between darkness and high LED illumination (400 lx) at 7 (CZ, F4, FZ, O1, O2, OZ, and T6) of 30 channels, while the alpha wave activity increased during darkness. In the second experiment, the green landscape image stimuli in the 30 lx-2600 K lighting condition elicited theta wave activity on the EEG, whereas the traffic congestion image stimuli under high LED illumination elicited high beta and gamma wave activities. Moreover, the subjects exhibited better stress coping ability and heart rate stability in response to green landscape image stimuli under illuminated conditions, according to their HRV. Conclusion: These results suggest that lower color temperatures and illumination levels alleviate tension, and that viewing green landscape image stimuli at low illumination, or in darkness, is effective for reducing stress. Conversely, high illumination levels and color temperatures are likely to increase tension and stress in response to traffic congestion image stimuli.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the preference of plant environmental images for flower plant consumption. This study came up with a total of four treatments including one image without plants and three images with flower plants (three roses, rose gift, rose garden). We conducted a survey on 104 men and women through the Google (online) survey and analyzed the data. The preference was higher with statistical significance for environmental images with plants than the image without plants. The preference for environmental images of roses was highest in the order of rose gift > rose garden > three roses. As a result of the cross-tabulation analysis, it was found that there was a significant difference in the preference for environmental images of roses according to general characteristics such as educational background and residence type. In terms of educational background, 2-year college graduates showed higher preference for the three environmental images of roses with statistical significance compared to high school graduates, university graduates and masters or higher. As a result of determining the difference in preference according to residential types, residents of multiplex houses showed higher preference for the "rose garden" environment image than residents of detached houses (p < .05). As a result of examining stress and depression in everyday life, 48.1% (the highest) of the respondents answered that they were "under daily stress" and 48.1% (the highest) of the respondents claimed not to be "under much depression". This study investigated the difference in preference according to demographic characteristics and existence of plants, preference in environmental images using roses, correlation with daily stress and depression, and utility of publicity using photographic images of plants.
This study was conducted to understand the emotional and situational context where non-suicidal self-injury occurs in everyday life. Sixty adults(age 19-35) completed daily surveys assessing positive and negative emotions, stressful events, self-injury thoughts, and behaviors for two weeks. Using a total of 663 collected entries, we analyzed specific personal emotions and stressful events related to non-suicidal self-injurious thoughts and behaviors. As a result, high negative emotions, low positive emotions, and total stress event scores were significantly related to self-injury thoughts and behaviors. In the model in which both emotion and stress were inserted as predictors, the low level of positive emotion showed a significant related to non-suicidal self-injurious behavior. These results suggest that negative emotion management and overall positive emotion reinforcement are important in emotion regulation intervention for non-suicidal self-injurious patients. The meaning of this study is that it searched for risk factors of non-suicidal injury in everyday life using a short-term longitudinal method.
This study tried to evaluate the difference of stress degree by Sasang constitution and lifestyle for workplace labors, and suggested the preventive oriental medicine approaches in occupational health area. 479 data for research were collected through the process of oriental health examination with questionnaire in workplace, and collected data were analyzed with frequency, crosstab, and Two-Way ANOVA. The results were as follows: 1) All subjects, total 479 were men, and constitutional distributions were 39.2% of Taeumin, 32.4% of Soumin, and 28.4% of Soyangin. The distributions of stress score were 13.2% of normal group, 13.4% of high risk group, and 73.5% of potential risk group. 2) There were no statistically significant differences for stress by constitution(p=0.085). By the results of optimal scaling and homogeneity analysis, Soyangin was close to potential risk group compared to other constitution, and Soumin and Taeumin were close to high risk and normal group, respectively. 3) For the difference of stress score by Sasang constitution and lifestyle, Soumin who exercised nearly everyday had the highest stress score with interaction in Factor 4 area(p<0.05), and there was no interaction in other area. 4) For the difference of PWI score by lifestyle, there were statistically significant differences for drinking(p<0.01), smoking(p<0.01), and obesity index(p<0.01)
