  • The A60 class deck penetration piece is a fire-resistance apparatus installed on the deck compartment to protect lives and to prevent flame diffusion in the case of a fire accident in a ship or offshore plant. In this study, the sensitivity of the fire-resistance performance and approximation characteristics for the A60 class penetration piece was evaluated by conducting a transient heat-transfer analysis and fire test. The transient heat-transfer analysis was conducted to evaluate the fire-resistance design of the A60 class deck penetration piece, and the analysis results were verified via the fire test. The penetration-piece length, diameter, material type, and insulation density were used as the design factors (DFs), and the output responses were the weight, temperature, cost, and productivity. The quantitative effects of each DF on the output responses were evaluated using the design-of-experiments method. Additionally, an optimum design case was identified to minimize the weight of the A60 class deck penetration piece while satisfying the allowable limits of the output responses. According to the design-of-experiments results, various approximate models, e.g., a Kriging model, the response surface method, and a radial basis function-based neural network (RBFN), were generated. The design-of-experiments results were verified by the approximation results. It was concluded that among the approximate models, the RBFN was able to explore the design space of the A60 class deck penetration piece with the highest accuracy.

  • The energy slab is a ground coupled heat exchanger equipped in building slab structures, which represents a layout similar to the horizontal ground heat exchanger (GHEX). The energy slab is installed as one component of the floor slab layers in order to utilize the underground structure as a hybrid energy structure. However, as the energy slab is horizontally arranged, its thermal performance is inevitably less than the conventional vertical GHEXs. Therefore, stainless steel (STS) pipes are alternatively considered as a heat exchanger instead of high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes in order to enhance thermal performance of GHEXs. Moreover, not only a floor slab but also a wall slab can be utilized as a heat-exchangeable energy slab in order to maximize the use of underground space effectively. In this paper, four field-scale energy slabs were constructed in a test bed, which consist of the STS and HDPE pipe, and a series of thermal response tests (TRTs) was conducted to evaluate relative heat exchange efficiency per unit pipe length according to the pipe material and the configuration of energy slabs. The energy slab equipped with the STS pipe shows higher thermal performance than the energy slab with the HDPE pipe. In addition, thermal performance of the wall-type energy slab is almost equivalent to the floor-type energy slab.

  • A lot of research is being done to develop a high-efficiency heat pump to save energy, and research to reduce or eliminate the phenomenon of frost occurring in the outdoor unit coil is also being conducted at the same time. A curved constant temperature chamber was constructed that can be tested under the same conditions as in the natural state so that the research can be conducted in which frost does not occur on the outdoor unit of the heat pump regardless of the season. Simulations were performed to verity whether such a curved constant temperature chamber has feasibility as an experimental device. For CFD conditions, the length of the straight duct in front of the outdoor unit located in the duct-type constant temperature chamber was 1, 5, 10 and 15 times the diameter of the duct. As a result, it was found that a straight space must be secured 10 times the diameter of the duct.

  • Many problems need to be solved before vision systems can actually be applied in industry, such as the precision of the kinematics model of the robot control algorithm based on visual information, active compensation of the camera's focal length and orientation during the movement of the robot, and understanding the mapping of the physical 3-D space into 2-D camera coordinates. An algorithm is proposed to enable robot to move actively even if the relative positions between the camera and the robot is unknown. To solve the correction problem, this study proposes vision system model with six camera parameters. To develop the robot vision control algorithm, the N-R and EKF methods are applied to the vision system model. Finally, the position accuracy and processing time of the two algorithms developed based based on the EKF and the N-R methods are compared experimentally by making the robot perform slender bar placement task.

  • Fracture toughness of rock is a constant that can indicate the initiation and propagation of cracks due to blasting, excavation, etc. Scaled model tests have been applied to the behavior of tunnels and the stability of limestone mines. Through the scaled model, damaged zone evaluation due to blasting is also carried out, and the scale factor is not applied to the failure-related factors. In this study, DCT (diametral compression test) and finite element method ATENA2D numerical analysis results were compared to determine whether the scale factor could be applied to the fracture toughness of rock. The theoretical values of the scale factor applied to the fracture toughness of the rock and the DCT test results and the numerical results are 0.21~0.46, 0.40, and 0.99MPa ${\sqrt{m}}$ respectively, so these three values should be considered when determining scale factor. It is necessary to derive a suitable scale factor in consideration of the length, time, and mass to which the scale factor is applied, as well as the values of the scale factor of major design factors such as uniaxial compressive strength and density.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop slacks pattern of elderly women aged over 60s by using the virtual twin and 3D virtual garment simulation system. The results were as follows; first, By using 3D Virtual Garment Simulation, new slacks pattern considered elderly women was development. The basic numerical formula were as follows, front waist girth W/4+2+1.5, back waist girth W/4+1.5+0.5, front hip girth H/4+0.75, back hip girth H/4+1.5, front crotch extension H/16-0.5, back crotch extension H/8-1.3, front dart amount 2 and back dart amount 1.5. Second, according to the results of the new slacks pattern's appearance evaluation, it estimated more highly than existing pattern in silhouette and ease amount, confirming that new slacks pattern is appropriate for the elderly women. Also, new slacks pattern was evaluated to allow proper space length of waist, abdomen and hip. Virtual models production through 3D body scan data, pattern draft and virtual garment digital program were applied to prototypic design method so as to enhance the fitness of ready-made garments. The use of the virtual twin made it impossible to comprehend the appearances and ease correspondent to motions. In order to evaluate wearing fitness, therefore, the system should be improved so as to change arm positions and perform various motions.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient continuous range query processing scheme using a modified grid based query indexing to reduce storage spaces and to accelerate processing time. The proposed method has two major features. First, each query has a bit identifier and each cell in a grid has a bit pattern that consists of the bit identifiers of the queries. The bit patterns present the relationship between cells and queries. Using the bit patterns, we can compute quickly what queries overlap a cell in a grid and reduce the number of unnecessary operations by comparing the bit patterns without comparing the query identifiers when we compute the relation between cells and queries. Second, the management of cells in the grid by groups prevents from wasting the storage space through the increase of the length of the bit pattern and increasing the comparison costs of bit patterns. We show through the performance evaluation that the proposed method outperforms the existing methods.

  • The safety of the disposal repository for high level radioactive waste should be guaranteed for a quite long period so that the precise evaluations are required. The site characteristics of the discontinuities are essential part of the safe repository design including engineered barrier and natural barrier systems. The discontinuities act like weak planes and at the same time, they act as flow paths so that their features should be investigated thoroughly. RQD (Rock Quality Designation) is one of the most widely applied characterizing methods due to its simplicity, however, modified designations have been proposed because RQD has some drawbacks, such as its directivity and dependence on the threshold length. This study aims to evaluate the applicability of the modified designations by applying them to the rock mass around KURT and to produce fundamental database that will be utilized in future studies.

  • "Summer Deadweight Tonnage(SDWT)" is used as the criteria of the berthing capacity when establishing port entry limits under current guideline. The important factors affecting to the maximum ship size of possible berthing are mass, length and breath of the ship rather than deadweight. Therefore this guideline should be modified to ensure safety and efficient operation of berth. This study aimed to propose a rational guideline to adjust the berthing capacity. In order to decide proper berthing capacity, three berths of Port of Ulsan were selected and systematic evaluations for the safety of passage transit, berthing maneuvers, ship motions at berth and stabilities of structures were conducted. Small changes of ship size had little effect on those characteristics and little significant differences were found according to the increase of ship size at the same displacement. The evaluation results of the increasement of 50% of berthing capacity at 20,000 DWT, 25% at 40,000 DWT and 13% at 150,000 DWT were within the design criteria in which the berths were built. Therefore, if the channel width, diameter of turning circle, berth length and mooring arrangements are satisfied with the criteria, the current berth limitations should be adjusted by the displacement. as substitute for the deadweight.

  • Mitochondria play key roles in the production of cell's energy. Their dominant function is the synthesis of adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) from adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and phosphate (Pi) through the oxidative phosphorylation. Evaluation of drug-induced mitochondrial toxicity has become increasingly important since mitochondrial dysfunction has recently been implicated in numerous diseases including cancer and diabetes mellitus. Mitochondrial functions have been monitored via oxygen consumption, mitochondrial membrane potential, and more importantly via ATP synthesis since ATP synthesis is the most essential function of mitochondria. Various analytical methods have been employed to investigate ATP synthesis in mitochondria, including high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), bioluminescence technique, and pH measurement. However, most of these methods are based on destructive analysis or indirect monitoring through the enzymatic reaction. Infrared absorption spectroscopy (IRAS) is one of the useful techniques for real-time, label-free, and direct monitoring of biological reactions [1,2]. However, the strong water absorption requires very short path length in the order of several micrometers. Transmission measurements with thin path length are not suitable for mitochondrial assays because solution handlings necessary for evaluating mitochondrial toxicity, such as rapid mixing of drugs and oxygen supply, are difficult in such a narrow space. On the other hand, IRAS in the multiple internal reflection (MIR) geometry provides an ideal optical configuration to combine solution handling and aqueous-phase measurement. We have recently reportedon a real-time monitoring of drug-induced necrotic and apoptotic cell death using MIR-IRAS [3,4]. Clear discrimination between viable and damaged cells has been demonstrated, showing a promise as a label-free and real-time detection for cell-based assays. In the present study, we have applied our MIR-IRAS system to mitochondria-based assays by monitoring ATP synthesis in isolated mitochondria from rat livers. Mitochondrial ATP synthesis and hydrolysis were in situ monitored with MIR-IRAS, while dissolved oxygen level and solution pH were simultaneously monitored with O2 and pH electrodes, respectively. It is demonstrated that ATP synthesis and hydrolysis can be monitored by the IR spectral changes in phosphate groups in adenine nucleotides and MIR-IRAS is useful for evaluating time-dependent drug effects of mitochondrial toxicants.
