  • Simulators have been used to evaluate drivers'reactions to various transportation products. Most researches, however, have been concentrated on their technical performance, thus this paper considers drivers'senses of moving on a vehicle simulator through the analysis of human sensibility ergonomics. A sensibility ergonomic method is proposed in order to improve the faithfulness of vehicle simulators. A simulator of passenger vehicle consists of such three modules as vehicle dynamics, virtual environment, and motion representation modules. To evaluate drivers'feedback, human feelings are categorized into a set verbal expressions collected and investigated to find the most appropriate ones for translational and angular accelerations of the simulator The cutoff frequency of the washout alter ill the representation module is selected as one sensibility factor Sensibility experiments were carried out to find correlation between the expressions and the cut-off frequency of the filter. This study suggests a methodology to obtain an ergonomic database which can be applied to the sensibility evaluation of dynamic simulators.

  • A fault tolerant control system, in which a digital back-up controller system is added on the existing analog control system, is developed for enhancing reliability of boiler control system in power plant. The digital back-up controller system(DBCS) has a multi-processor structure with capabilities of fault diagnosis, back-up control, self test, and graphic monitoring. Specifically, switching mechanism composed of expandable modules is designed so that back-up controller takes over any faulty control loops and the number of back-up control loops is determined as that of simultaneous faults. A process simulator that simulates the boiler analog control system is developed for safety test and performance evaluation prior to real plant application. DBCS is installed at the Ulsan thermal power plant, and fault tolerant control performance is assured under the faults that some controller modules are pulled out.

  • The aim of this study is to characterize the optical properties of white light-emitting diodes lighting modules and then to evaluate the sensitivity of students and teachers in reacting to the optical properties of these modules. For the sake of this study, each of 5 lighting modules was introduced to the 5 test cabinets. The 5 test cabinets were evaluated and analyzed the student and teacher's sensitivity reaction. We have selected If questions on sensitivity of the lighting and evaluated these questions with semantic differential method. To verify the reliability and objectivity of the questions, the feasibility survey was carried out by a preliminary test. As a result of the test, the sensitivities on the test cabinets were classified the 4 factors, namely, activity as the first factor, stability as the second one , potency as the third one and sensitive image as the fourth one respectively. By the evaluation of student and teacher's sensitivity on the correlated color temperature, they preferred the cabinet with the higher color temperature in view of the activity and potency. And they preferred the cabinet with the lower color temperature in view of the stability factor. In the sensitive image, they preferred the 5800K, bluish white lighting regardless of the color temperature. By the evaluation on the color rendering index, they preferred the cabinet with the higher color rendering index in view of the activity, stability and sensitive image. In the potency factor, they preferred the white lighting with the middle color rendering index.

  • In this paper, we introduce the fast decoding method with the SIMD (Single Instruction Multiple Data) instructions for HEVC RExt (High Efficiency Video Coding Range Extensions). Several tools of HEVC RExt such as intra prediction, interpolation, inverse-quantization, inverse-transform, and clipping modules can be classified as the proper modules for applying the SIMD instructions. In consideration of bit-depth increasement of RExt, intra prediction, interpolation, inverse-quantization, inverse-transform, and clipping modules are accelerated by SSE (Streaming SIMD Extension) instructions. In addition, we propose effective implementations for interpolation filter, inverse-quantization, and clipping modules by utilizing a set of AVX2 (Advanced Vector eXtension 2) instructions that can use 256 bits register. The evaluation of the proposed methods were performed on the private HEVC RExt decoder developed based on HM 16.0. The experimental results show that the developed RExt decoder reduces 12% average decoding time, compared with the conventional sequential method.

  • Driven by the recent energy saving trend, conventional silicon based power conversion modules are being replaced by modules using silicon carbide. Previous papers have focused mainly on the electrical advantages of silicon carbide semiconductors that can be used to design switching devices with much lower losses than conventional silicon based devices. However, no systematic study of their thermomechanical reliability in power conversion modules using finite element method (FEM) simulation has been presented. In this paper, silicon and silicon carbide based power devices with three-phase switching were designed and compared from the viewpoint of thermomechanical reliability. The switching loss of power conversion module was measured by the switching loss evaluation system and measured switching loss data was used for the thermal FEM simulation. Temperature and stress/strain distributions were analyzed. Finally, a thermal fatigue simulation was conducted to analyze the creep phenomenon of the joining materials. It was shown that at the working frequency of 20 kHz, the maximum temperature and stress of the power conversion module with SiC chips were reduced by 56% and 47%, respectively, compared with Si chips. In addition, the creep equivalent strain of joining material in SiC chip was reduced by 53% after thermal cycle, compared with the joining material in Si chip.

  • Recently, the flat display modules such as plasma or TFT-LCD employ thin crystallized panels which are normally weak to high level transient mechanical energy inputs. As a result, anti-shock performance is one of the most important design specifications for TFT-LCD modules. However, most of large display module designs are generated based on engineers own experiences. Also, a large-scale analysis to evaluate complex material and structural behaviors is one of interesting topic in diverse engineering and scientific fields. The utilization of massively parallel processors has also been a recent trend of high performance computing. The objective of this paper is to introduce a parallel process system which consists of general purpose finite element analysis solver as well as parallelized PC cluster. The parallel processing system is constructed using thirty-two processing elements and the finite element program is developed by adopting hierarchical domain decomposition method. In order to verify the efficiency of the established system, an impact analysis on thin and complex sub-parts of flat display modules is performed. The evaluation results showed a good agreement with the corresponding reference solutions, and thus, the parallel process system seems to be a useful tool fur the complex structural analysis such as IT related products.
