  • We study low type submanifolds in pseudo-Euclidean space which is especially of 2-type pseudo-umbilical. We also determine full null 2-type surfaces with parallel mean curvature vector in 4-dimensional Minkowski space-time.

  • We show how some of well-known recurrent operators such as recurrent curvature operator, recurrent Ricci operator, recurrent Jacobi operator, recurrent shape and Weyl operators have the significant role for biharmonic hypersurfaces to be minimal in the Euclidean space.

  • In this paper, A pipeline structured-degree computationless modified Euclidean (PS-DCME) algorithm is proposed, which can be used for a RS(23,17) decoder for MB-OFDM system. PS-DCME algorithm requires a state machine instead of the degree computation and comparison circuits, so that the hardware complexity of the decoder can be reduced and high-speed decoder can be implemented. We have implemented a RS(23,17) decoder with PS-DCME using Verilog HDL and synthesized with Samsung 65nm library. From synthesis results, it can operate at clock frequency of 250MHz, and gate count is 19,827.

  • Recently, one interesting possibility is proposed that a magnetar can be a progenitor of short and hard gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). If this is true, one may expect that the short and hard GRBs, at least some of GRBs in this class, are distributed in the Euclidean space and that the angular position of these GRBs is correlated with galaxy clusters. Even though it is reported that the correlation is statistically marginal, the observed value of < $V/V_{max}$ > deviates from the Euclidean value. The latter fact is often used as evidence against a local extragalactic origin for short GRB class. We demonstrate that GRB sample of which the value of < $V/V_{max}$ > deviates from the Euclidean value can be spatially confined within the low value of z. We select very short bursts (TgO < 0.3 sec) from the BATSE 4B catalog. The value of < $V/V_{max}$ > of the short bursts is 0.4459. Considering a conic-beam and a cylindrical beam for the luminosity function, we deduce the corresponding spatial distribution of the GRB sources. We also calculate the fraction of bursts whose redshifts are larger than a certain redshift z', i.e. f>z'. We find that GRBs may be distributed near to us, despite the non-Euclidean value of < $V/V_{max}$ >. A broad and uniform beam pattern seems compatible with the magnetar model in that the magnetar model requires a small $z_{max}$.

  • In this paper, an estimation technique of initial rotor position at standstill in Switched Reluctance Motor(SRM) is proposed. In case search coils are used as a position sensor, it has many advantages like low cost, decrease in the volume, high robust characteristics and wide applications. However, the initial rotor position detection is very difficult because the search coil's EMF is not exist at a standstill. In this paper, a near estimation method of initial rotor position is suggested using squared Euclidean distance. The simulation and experiment for the proposed method are achieved. The validity of the proposed method is verified by experimental results.

  • This study is a follow-up study of Han and Kang (2013) and Kang and Han (2013) which examined cross-generational changes in the Korean vowels /o/ and /u/ using acoustic analyses of the vowel formants of these two vowels, their Euclidean distances and the overlap fraction values generated in SOAM 2D (Wassink, 2006). Their results showed an on-going approximation of /o/ and /u/, more evident in female speakers and non-initial vowels. However, these studies employed non-words in a frame sentence. To see the extent to which these two vowels are merged in real words in spontaneous speech, we conducted an acoustic analysis of the formants of /o/ and /u/ produced by two age groups of female speakers while reading a letter sample. The results demonstrate that 1) the younger speakers employed mostly F2 but not F1 differences in the production of /o/ and /u/; 2) the Euclidean distance of these two vowels was shorter in non-initial than initial position, but there was no difference in Euclidean distance between the two age groups (20's vs. 40-50's); 3) overall, /o/ and /u/ were more overlapped in non-initial than initial position, but in non-initial position, younger speakers showed more congested distribution of the vowels than in older speakers.

  • Objectives : This study aims to analyze the co-occurrence of pathological symptoms and corresponding acupoints as documented by the comprehensive acupuncture and moxibustion records in the classical texts of Far East traditional medicine as an aid to a more efficient understanding of the tacit treatment principles of ancient physicians. Methods : The Classic of Nourishing Life with Acupuncture and Moxibustion(Zhenjiu Zisheng Jing; hereinafter ZZJ) was selected as the primary reference book for the analysis. The pathology-acupoint co-occurrence analysis was performed by applying 4 values of vector space measures(weighted Euclidean distance, Euclidean distance, $Cram\acute{e}r^{\prime}s$ V and Canberra distance), which measure the distance between the observed and expected co-occurrence counts, and 3 values of probabilistic measures(association strength, Fisher's exact test and Jaccard similarity), which measure the probability of observed co-occurrences. Results : The treatment records contained in ZZJ were preprocessed, which yielded 4162 pathology-acupoint sets. Co-occurrence was performed applying 7 different analysis variables, followed by a prediction simulation. The prediction simulation results revealed the Weighted Euclidean distance had the highest prediction rate with 24.32%, followed by Canberra distance(23.14%) and association strength(21.29%). Conclusions : The weighted Euclidean distance among the vector space measures and the association strength among the probabilistic measures were verified to be the most efficient analysis methods in analyzing the correlation between acupoints and pathologies found in the classical medical texts.

  • This paper is to propose image segmentation method based on chamfer algorithm. First, we get original image from CCD camera and transform it into gray image. Second, we extract maximum gray value of background and reconstruct and eliminate the background using surface fitting method and bilinear interpolation. Third, we subtract the reconstructed background from gray image to remove noises in gray image. Fourth, we transform the subtracted image into binary image using Otsu's optimal thresholding method. Fifth, we use morphological filters such as areaopen, opening, filling filter etc. to remove noises and isolated points. Sixth, we use chamfer distance or Euclidean distance to this filtered image. Finally, we use watershed algorithm and count microorganisms in image by labeling. To prove the effectiveness, we apply the proposed algorithm to one of Ammonia-oxidizing bacteria, Acinetobacter sp. It is shown that both Euclidean algorithm and chamfer algorithm show over-segmentation. But Chamfer algorithm shows less over-segmentation than Euclidean algorithm.
