  • Due to a mistranslation of Sanskrit to Chinese, East Asian Buddhist community misunderstands the original meaning of the fundamental word, 'sachal(寺刹)'. Sanskrit chattra, a parasol on top of a venerated Indian stupa buried with Buddha's sarira, became the symbol of majesty. The Indian stupa was transformed into a pagoda in China, and the highlighted parasol on the summit was transliterated into chaldara(刹多羅), an abbreviation for chal (刹), and finally designated the whole pagoda(塔). Sachal consists with lying low monastery and high-rise pagoda. Tapsa(塔寺), an archaic word of temple, is exactly the same as sachal, because chal means tap, pagoda. However, during the 7th century a Buddhist monk erroneously double-transliterated the Sanskrit 'kshetra,' meaning of land, into the same word as chal, even despite phonetic disaccord. Thereafter, sutra translators followed and copied the error for long centuries. It was the Japanese pioneer scholars that worsen the situation 100 years ago, to publish Sanskrit dictionaries with the errors insisting on phonetic transliteration, though pronunciation of 'kshe-' which is quite different from 'cha-.' Thereafter, upcoming scholars followed their fallacy without any verification. Fallacy of chal, meaning of land, dominates Buddhist community broadly, falling into conviction of collective fixed dogma in East Asia up to now. In the Buddhist community, it is the most important matter to recognize that the same language has become to refer completely different objects due to translation errors. As a research method, searching for corresponding Sanskrit words in translated sutras and dictionaries of Buddhism is predominant. Then, after analyzing the authenticity, the fallacy toward the truth will be corrected.

  • Names attributed to villages varies from governmental administrative division to simple modest names called from the habitants. Actually, scarce names only called from the habitants remains today. While these names reflect abundant cultural, social and historical aspects we made this research based on those nominations related only to Korean traditional medicine(KTM). We could find that the most KTM related village name was famine relieve or/and medicinal plant designation like Puerariae village. Also there was names of doctors like Dasan. Another big portion was from the medicinal mineral waters like Yakbawegol which said has the properties for dermatologic desease. We suggest this study may use as a clue in the field of KTM history research.

  • Objective : To explore the meaning of Eumyangyeokchahunobok-byung (陰陽易差後勞復病) through two cases and finding the relationship with the DSM-5 sleep-wake disorder. Methods : Following a disease pattern identification diagnostic system based on Shanghanlun provisions (DPIDS), we analyzed cases with chronic fatigue and diplopia caused after sleep disorders. The patients were treated with the Soshiho-tang and Yijoong-tang. Results : The two herbal medicines showed remarkable improvement in the patients. The sleep disorders and the secondary pathologies were rapidly relieved within a month. Conclusions : The patterns of sleep disorders of the two patients were found to be very similar to the circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders, as described in DSM-5. Although the etymology of the Chinese characters has not been clearly known yet, it was possible to present the original hypotheses on 更and 了due to clinical inference.

  • Lived space, i.e. space as we experience it in our mundane life, does not exist independently of material objects: it is defined, delimited and made sensible by them. Concrete spaces so manifest are not sterile and neutral homogeneous voids. Not only do they interact with material objects but also influence our feelings and behaviour, constituting emotionally charged fields. This field dynamics of space is readily observed in the phenomenon of place as well as in the etymology and usage of the word 'place'. Each space is pervaded by a particular mood or atmosphere in accordance with its size and shape as well as with the perceptual properties of its constituent objects. Moreover, within each space the atmosphere also changes depending on the location. Space then can be thought of as a nonhomogeneous field of emotional energy. The fact that one is attracted to some places and repulsed by others may be described as one's being subject to invisible forces of pulls and pushes, attractions and repulsions. Out spatial environment is therefore a field of forces of varying directions and magnitudes.

  • Korean cephalopods only recorded with Korean name in the literature were reviewed to solve confusions in use of their Korean name for taxonomic studies of cephalopods in Korea, and to prepare a basic check list for standardizing total cephaolopods fauna of Korea in the future. A total 38 cephalopods species with Korean names were listed in this study; 14 species in order Sepioidea, 17 species in Teuthoidea, 7 species in Octopoda. The etymology and some problems of Korean names of cephalopods occurring in Korea, and the useable rules for naming cephalopods with Korean words are recommended and discussed.

  • This study reports the pagurid hermit crab Porcellanopagurus japonicus in Korean waters for the first time. This species has a right cheliped larger than the left one, reduced and globular abdomen, and symmetrical uropods. Porcellanopagurus japonicus is similar to P. nihonkaiensis, a previously reported congeneric species in Korea, but also has distinguished morphological and ecological characters. There are currently issues with the Korean scientific name for P. japonicus, we suggest a reasonable Korean scientific name of this organism with its etymology. In addition, this species inhabits bivalve shells, which is not a typical habitat for hermit crabs, and the unique habitats of this and several other Korean hermit crabs are reviewed.

Methods: We analyzed the meaning of three Chinese characters based on oracle bones and bronze inscriptions, and considered examples of their utilization in two books. Results:In 『Gangpyeong-Shanghanlun』, 巫appears once, 醫appears 28 times, and 工appears once. In 『Huangdi Neijing』, 巫appears twice, 醫appears 24 times, and 工appears 64 times. Conclusions: The authors of 『傷寒論』 recognized themselves as '醫', and they were doctors who mainly treated prescriptions in the liquid form represented by 湯(tang). The authors of 『黃帝內經』 recognized themselves as '工', and they were doctors who treated them with a tool represented by "acupuncture."
