  • In this study, physical properties of poly(vinyl acetate-co-ethylene) (VAE) emulsion were investigated by adding different amounts of di-butyl phthalate (DBP) which is a common plasticizer of VAE. The glass transition temperature $(T_g)$ of the dried plasticized VAE emulsion film, which measured by Differential Scanning Calorimeter, was decreased with increasing the DBP contents while the viscosity of the plasticized VAE emulsion was increased with the DBP contents. These results suggest that the plasticizer in the dried VAE film can prevent the strong interaction between chains, resulted by the decrease of $T_g$. In the emulsion, however, the particle sizes were swelled by the penetration of plasticizers and then its viscosity increased with the DBP content. When the DBP was added, the mechanical properties of the plasticized VAE films, such as tensile strength, elongation and creep resistance, were decreased while the water resistance was increased.

  • To increase the properties of EVA foam such as tensile strength, rebound resilience, and compression set, ethylene-1-butene copolymer (EtBC) was blended with EVA. After that crosslink characteristics of the blends and cell structures and mechanical properties of the foam were studied. As the amount of EtBC increased in EVA/EtBC blends, torque values of oscillating disc rheometer(ODR) increased and the foaming ratio decreased because the viscosity and crosslink density of EVA/EtBC blends increased. Foaming ratio and cell size of the foam increased by increasing the amount of foaming agent. When compared the mechanical properties of the foam which have same densities, tensile strength, rebound resilience, and compression set properties of the foam were improved by increasing the amount of EtBC in the EVA/EtBC blends.

  • Vinyl acetate (VA) contents of poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (EVA) analyzed by infrared spectroscopy (IR), nuclear magnetic spectroscopy (NMR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were compared. Four grade EVAs supplied by Aldrich Co. and four grade EVAs manufactured by DuPont Co. were used. For IR analysis, VA contents were determined using calibration curve (absorbance ratio of $1739cm^{-1}/2922cm^{-1}$ or $609cm^{-1}/1464cm^{-1}$) of reference EVAs. Correlation coefficients of the calibration curves were not sufficiently high ($r^2{\leq}0.96$). For NMR analysis, VA contents were determined using peaks of $CH_3$, $CH_2$, and CH. VA contents determined by NMR analysis were less than those marked by suppliers more than 10%. For TGA, VA contents were determined using weight loss through deacetylation. VA contents determined by TGA were slightly different with those marked by suppliers. Difference in the VA contents determined by different analytical methods was discussed, and difference in the analytical results according to the EVA suppliers was also examined.

  • In this study, a V-grooved single-mode fiber along with optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) as a quasi-distributed temperature sensor was investigated. The external medium used to fill the V-groove affects the optical mode. The V-groove was filled with ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) because its transmittance was sensitive to temperature. The experimental results showed that the optical loss of the sensor varies with temperature, and the sensitivity depends on the depth of the V-groove.

  • Ethinylestradiol (EE)-containing matrix was fabricated with ethylene-vinyl acetate(EVA) copolymer to control the release of the drug, Effect of addition of PEG 400 as receptor solution, the stripping of skin and Azone pretreatment on skin on the permeation of EE through the excised mouse skin was also studied. The permeation rate of EE through the excised mouse skin was affected by the PEG 400 volume fraction. The Azone pretreatment on skin didn't affect on the steady state flux, however, the lag time was shortened. The permeation rate of EE through the stripped skin was much larger than that through the whole skin. It showed that the stratum corneum acts as a barrier of skin permeation. The fact that there is little difference in EE permeation between the intact skin and the stripped skin with EVA membrane shows the permeation of EE through the mouse skin is mainly controlled by the membrane.

  • The physical properties of functionalized graphene sheet (FGS)/poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (EVA) was examined with various kinds of EVA, having vinyl acetate (VA) contents in the range of 0 to 40 wt%. The compatibility between FGS and EVA was enhanced as the polar VA content of EVA increased. Thus, the dispersion of FGS in EVA became finer, and the decrease of surface resistivity and the increase of tensile modulus by the added FGS became more effective when the VA content of EVA was high. When the VA content was low, the elongation at break was reduced drastically by added FGS due to the poor adhesion of FGS/EVA interface. The crystallization of EVA was generally retarded by the interaction with dispersed FGS. However, when both the VA content of EVA and the added amount of FGS were low, the crystallization of EVA was enhanced, probably due to the predominant nucleating effect by FGS.

  • Polypropylene-ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer (PP-EVA) blends were prepared by mechanical blending using relatively semi-crystaline ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer and polypropylene. In order to obtain dyeable PP fiber, PP-EVA blends were prepared using below 10wt.% of EVA and formed a filament by the melt spinning method. The resultant fibers had tensile strengh of 2∼3g/d, elongation of 330∼600%, initial modulus of 22∼46g/d, and exhibited markedly improved dyeing property.

  • In case of oral application of quinupramine, antidepressants, it may cause adverse effects such as diarrhea, nausea due to transient high blood concentration. Ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) which is heat-processible, flexible, inexpensive material was used for transdermal drug delivery. The purpose of this study was to develop the new transdermal delivery system of quinupramine using EVA polymer matrix that can provide sustained release and avoid the side effects. The EVA matrix containing quinupramine was prepared by solvent-evaporation method. (omitted)

  • In this experiment, blends of ethylene vinyl acetate rubber (EVM) with a vinyl acetate (VA) content greater than 40 wt% and ethylene propylene rubber (EPM) were prepared by mechanical mixing; a number of parameters of the blends, including oil resistance, morphological and dynamic mechanical properties and flame retardancy, were subsequently measured. In the $100^{\circ}C$ oil resistance test, both the ammonium polyphosphate/dipentaerythritol/expandable graphite (APP/DPER/EG) and aluminum hydroxide (ATH) flame retardant systems showed an increase in volume change with increasing EPM content. For the ATH system, the dispersion shape was coarse and aggregation was observed. The results of a dynamic mechanical test showed slightly higher E' and E'' for the APP/DPER/EG flame retardant system when compared to the single ATH system. For both the APP/DPER/EG and ATH systems, the limited oxygen index (LOI) tests performed at increasing content of EPM showed a LOI value higher than 30, indicating excellent flame resistance.

  • Herein, three polymer compounds were manufactured using three polymer combination methods, ethylene-vinyl acetate/ethylene-propylene-diene-copolymer (EPDM), ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA)/polyethylene-A (PE-A; density: 0.870), and ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA)/polyethylene-B (PE-B; density: 0.885), for making cable sheath for use in the shipping industry. In this study, EVA, EPDM, PE-A, and PE-B were used as matrix polymers, and EVA-grafted maleic anhydride was used as a coupling agent for compounding with various compounds such as a fire retardant, cross-linking agent, filler, and other additives, besides the plasticizer. ${\Delta}T$, Mooney viscosity, and tensile strength increased in order of EPDM < PE-A < PE-B, the probable reason is due to the different crosslinking effect. The three compounds showed similar results for fire resistance and aging resistance after compounding process, but they showed excellent cold resistance owing to the non-polarity of the polymers and sufficient plasticizer content.
