  • Aminated poly(ether sulfone)(APES) was prepared by amination of nitrated poly(ether sulfone)(NPES) after poly(ether sulfone)(PES) was nitrated with mixed acid of nitric acid and sulfuric acid(sulfuric acid is a catalyst). As a results of the FT-IR spectrum analysis, the nitration of PES was confirmed by the bands of asymmetric stretching and symmetric stretching of $NO_2$ group at 1537 and $1351cm^{-1}$, respectively. Also when the NPES was aminated, it was disappeared to absorbance peaks of $NO_2$ group. And It was confirmed by the bands of asymmetric stretching and symmetric stretching of $NH_2$ group at 3470 and $3374cm^{-1}$, respectively. The optimum condition of the nitration on PES(5 g; 21.55 mmol.) was 12 hr of reaction time, $120^{\circ}C$ of reaction temperature, nitric acid of 28.00 mmol. and sulfuric acid of 52.00 mmol. As a result of the elemental analysis of APES, reapeating unit per amine groups were induced to 0.89. The adsorption rate of NO gas was lower than that of silica gel and active carbon. But the adsorption capacity of NO gas was higher than that of these. When the APES was absorbed to NO gas, the chemical adsorption rate was lower than the physical adsorption rate. But the chemical adsorption capacity of it was higher than physical adsorption capacity.

  • The immunopotenciating effects of petroleum ether extract, ethanol extract and butanol fraction of panax ginseng on the immunotoxicity of Cimetidine were investigated in ICR mice. Immune responses were evaluated by antibody production, Arthus reaction, delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH), and rosette forming cell (RFC) in mice, sensitized and challenged with sheep red blood cells. To investigate the change of the non-specific immune responses, phagocyte activity and number of leukocytes in peripheral blood were measured also. The results of this study are summarized as followings; 1. Cimetidine treated group as compared with normal group generally decreased HA, 2-MER, RFC, number of circulating leukocytes and phagocyte activity whereas in-creased Arthus reaction and DTH. 2. The panax ginseng petroleum ether extract combined administration group as compared with the control group remarkably increased HA, 2-MER, number of circulating leukocytes and phagocyte activity. 3. The panax ginseng ethanol extract combined administration group as compared with the control group remarkably increased Arthus reaction, DTH, HA, RFC, number of circulating leukocytes and phagocyte activity. 4. The panax ginseng butanol fraction combined administration group as compared with the control group remarkably increased Arthus reaction, HA, 2-MER, RFC, number of circulating leukocytes and phagocyte activity.

  • To synthesize cation exchange resin which has thermal stability, the sulfonated poly(ether ether sulfone) (SPEES) was obtained by sulfonation after synthesis of poly(ether ether sulfone) (PEES). It was prepared from hydroquinone and dichlorophenyl sulfone. From FT-IR results, the sulfonation was confirmed by the bands of asymmetric O=S=O stretching of $SO_3Na$ Na group at $1140cm^{-1}$ and S-C stretching at $621cm^{-1}$. The optimum condition of the sulfonation of PEES, based on IR absorbance, was 3 hr of reaction time, $30^{\circ}C$ of reaction temperature, and chlorosulfonic acid of 150 mol%. Ion exchange capacities calculated by the IR absorbance of PEES sulfonated in optimum condition was 6.2 meq/g, which was nearly similar to the ion exchange capacity calculated by titration. When the metal ion was adsorved, small brain, lump, hulled millet shape and compact surface, were observed in the morphology of SPEES.

  • Photoreactions of pseudosaccharin ethers have been investigated. Pseudosaccharin 3-allyl ether undergoes a facile photoreaction via reaction pathways involving homolysis of bond between pseudosaccharyl oxygen and 3-allyl carbon, and excited nucleophilic substitution of allyloxy group by solvent which are not quenched by oxygen present in the reaction. Product yield demonstrates that the homolysis pathway predominates over the nucleophilic substitution in ca. 7:1 ratio. In contrast, pseudosaccharin alkyl ethers follow different reaction routes to produce two products, solvent-substituted pseudosaccharin alkyl ethers and reduction products, 3-alkoxy-1, 2-benzisothiazoles. The formations of reduction products, 3-alkoxy-1, 2-benzisothiazoles are completely quenched by oxygen.

  • In the present study, the experiment was made to observe the change of the blood sugar levels in the process of general anesthesia, subjecting the rabbits to the light or deep inhalation anesthesia with ether or methoxyflurane by the non-rebreathing system. The blood sugar level was measured by the method of Somogyi and Nelson. The results are summarized as follows; 1. The blood sugar level of the normal rabbit was $112.\;04{\pm}9.88\;mg%$. 2. The blood sugar level in the initial stage of the light ether anesthesia was significantly increased, and slight decrease was observed in the beginning of the deep anesthesia. 3. In the ether anesthesia group, the sugar level increased gradually when deep anesthesia was induced. 4. Anesthesia with methoxyflurane produced a similar pattern of the blood sugar as in the ether group, with no significant difference between ether and methoxyflurane anesthesia.

  • Crown ether-based HPLC chiral stationary phases (CSPs) have been successfully utilized in the resolution of various racemic compounds containing a primary amino group. Especially, CSPs based on chiral crown ethers incorporating chiral binaphthyl unit or tartaric acid unit and based on phenolic pseudo chiral crown ethers have shown high chiral recognition efficiency. In this account paper, a review on the development of crown etherbased HPLC CSPs, their structural characteristics and applications to the resolution of racemic compounds including chiral drugs containing a primary or secondary amino group with the variation of the type and the content of mobile phase components and with the variation of the column temperature is presented.

  • Rats (Sprague Dawley, male, 200 g) were fed with 15% corn oil containing a large quantity of 18 2 (linoleic acid) for 3 weeks, and were followed by feeding the petroleum ether extracts from Korean red ginseng for 3 weeks. cGMP was produced more in platelets prepared from both 15% corn oil and petroleum ether extracts-fed group than in platelets only 15% corn oil-fed group, indicating that the production of cGMP is increased by feeding the petroleum ether extracts. When this platelet was stimulated by phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate (PMA), the level of cGMP was decreased. However, the platelets in medium containing protein fraction (200 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml) was stimulated by PMA, the production of cGMP inhibited by PMA was increased by 3 times or more. These results suggest that both the protein fraction and the petroleum ether extracts from Korean red ginseng are synergistic in the productiorl of cGMP, and they may have the antiplatelet effects.

  • Immobilization method of lariat azacrown ethers, containing hydroxyl group in the side arm of crown ring, on the polymer matrix and the phase-transfer catalytic activity of thus obtained immobilized lariat azacrown ethers were studied. Polystyrene resins with crown ether structures and hydroxyl groups adjacent to the macrorings were prepared by the reaction of crosslinked polystyrene resins containing epoxy groups with monoaza-15-crown-5 or monoaza-18-crown-6. Microporous crosslinked polystyrene resins containing epoxy group for the syntheses of these immobilized lariat crown catalysts were prepared by suspension polymerization of styrene, divinylbenzene (DVB 2%) and vinylbenzylglycidyl ether. The immobilized lariat catalysts with 10-20% ring substitution exhibited maximal activity for the halogen exchange reactions of 1-bromooctane with aqueous KI or NaI under triphase heterogeneous conditions. Immobilized catalyst exhibited higher activity than corresponding catalyst without the hydroxyl group and this result was suggested that the active site have a structure in which the $K^+$ ion was bound by the cooperative coordination of the crown ring donors and the hydroxyl group in the side arm.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the antioxidant activities of clove extracts in water, methanol and ether. The clove extracts, BHA and ${\alpha}$-tocopherol were added to each oil at a level of 200 ppm. The activities of the substrate oils and controls were tested under autoxidation and thermal oxidation conditions. The degree of the effects of the antioxidant activities under autoxidation condition were in the following order; ether extract 〉 methanol extract 〉BHA 〉 ${\alpha}$-tocopherol 〉 water extract = control group. The induction periods of the control, water, methanol and ether extracts, and BHA and ${\alpha}$-tocopherol were 9.5, 9.6, 10.7 11.8, 10.4 and 9.7 days, respectively. Under thermal oxidation condition, the methanol extract showed stronger antioxidant activity than those of the water and ether extracts. The antioxidant activity of the methanol extract was attributed to ${\alpha}$-tocopherol and BHA.
