Objectives : This study was performed to find best extraction solvent for application of Ulmi cortex to food or herbal medicine as an antioxidant only using water, ethanol and their mixtures. Methods : The Ulmi cortex extracts were prepared using water and 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, 90% and 100% (v/v) ethanol, and were evaluated yields, total polyphenol contents, DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities, lipid peroxidation activities, and catechin and epicatechin contents. Results : Among the Ulmi cortex extracts, the yield was highest in water extract (8.9%) and lowest in ethanol extract (3.8%). The yield of 30% ethanol extract (8.5%) also was very high to similar with water extract. The total polyphenol content was highest in the 30% ethanol extract ($253.6{\mu}g/mg$ extract) and lowest in water extract ($109.0{\mu}g/mg$ extract). The DPPH radical scavenging activity was highest in ethanol extract (IC50, $8.53{\mu}g/ml$), ABTS radical scavenging activity was highest in 60% ethanol extract (IC50, $3.08{\mu}g/ml$), and the inhibition of lipid peroxidation was highest in 70% ethanol extract (IC50, $7.96{\mu}g/ml$). As ethanol content of extraction solvent increased from 0% to 30%, the antioxidant activities were remarkably increased whereas from 30% to 100%, the antioxidant activities were increased or decreased a little. Conclusions : The findings of the present study suggest that 30% ethanol is best solvent for extraction of Ulmi cortex, considering yield, polyphenol content, and antioxidant activities with extraction cost.

Aster koraiensis Nakai (A. koraiensis) which has been used as a food and medicinal plant in the past, is valuable as functional food material. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the antioxidant properties and major phenolics of A. koraiensis extracts with different ethanol concentrations (0, 50, 70, and 100% aqueous ethanol solution). When ethanol concentration in the extraction solvent was increased, extraction yield decreased; 34.2, 23.2, 21.0, and 5.5% in 0, 50, 70, and 100% ethanolic extracts, respectively. Total phenolics content and antioxidant activities of extracts were increased in an ethanol concentration-dependant manner. The major phenolics in the extracts were chlorogenic acid (21.264~58.666 mg/g), isochlorogenic acid A (10.432~145.353 mg/g), and isochlorogenic acid C(0.239~13.148 mg/g), and these phenolic contents were higher in 70 and 100% ethanolic extracts than other extracts. Significant correlations were observed between ethanol concentration of extraction solvent, antioxidant properties, and major phenolics. These results indicated that the optimal ethanol concentration for extraction was 70%.

This study was carried out to determine the simultaneous extraction conditions of functional components (lutein, ${\beta}$-carotene, total polyphenol, flavonoids, and phenolic compounds) from sweet potato leaves and to evaluate the antioxidant activities. Extraction conditions included different ethanol concentrations (1st extraction: 99.9% ethanol; 2nd extraction: 50~90% ethanol) and times (30, 60, and 90 min). The highest values of lutein and ${\beta}$-carotene content were obtained by the 2nd extraction at an ethanol concentration of 90%. The extraction yields of lutein and ${\beta}$-carotene decreased with increasing extraction time. The maximum polyphenol, flavonoid, and total phenolic acid contents and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activities were 32.3 mg gallic acid equivalent/g, 17.0 mg catechin equivalent/g, 2,842.6 mg/100 g, 17.0 mg ascorbic acid equivalent/g, and 1.94 mg/mL ($IC_{50}$) at the 2nd extraction with an ethanol concentration of 60%. The optimum extraction conditions were as follows; ethanol concentrations of the extraction solvent were 99.9% (1st extraction) and 60% (2nd extraction), and extraction time was 30 min.
This study was carried out to extract ginsenosides in by-products from honeyed red ginseng. Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimize the extraction conditions. Based on D-optimal design, independent variables were ethanol (extraction solvent) concentration (30-90%, v/v), extraction temperature ($25-70^{\circ}C$), and extraction time (5-11 h). Extraction yield (Y1) and total ginsenosides (Y2) in the extract were analyzed as dependent variables. Results found that extraction yield increased with increasing extraction temperature and time, whereas it was decreased with increasing ethanol concentration. Similar trends were found for the content of ginsenosides in the extracts, except for ethanol concentration, which was increased with increasing ethanol concentration. Regression equations derived from RSM were suggested to coincide well with the results from the experiments. The optimal extraction conditions for extraction yield and total ginsenosides were an extraction temperature of $56.94^{\circ}C$, ethanol concentration of 57.90%, and extraction time of 11 h. Under these conditions, extraction yield and total ginsenoside contents were predicted to be 84.52% and 9.54 mg/g, respectively.
The solvent extraction of polyethylene glycol (PEG) by ethanol has been studied for the powder injection molded compacts of Sr-ferrite/PEG/carnauba wax/HDPE. The extraction rate of PEG is sensitively proportional to the solvent temperature whereas it is inversely proportional to the contents of PEG, the molecular weight of PEG. and the specimen thickness. The high extraction rate of PEG is achieved under the following conditions: solvent temperature of $70^{\circ}C$, PEG contents of 30%, and PEG molecular weight of 400 g/mol. In the early stage of solvent extraction, the non-linear relationship between the extraction rate and the square root of the extraction time indicates that the extraction of PEG does not follow the Fickian behavior. At extraction times longer than 180 min. however, the extraction of PEG follows the Fickian behavior. The extraction fate of PEG by ethanol is about$1.0{ imes}10^{-6}g/cm^2sec$ enough for common applications.

Response surface methodology was used to monitor the characteristics of Corni fructus. A maximum electron donating ability of 81.27% was obtained at 119.71 W of microwave power, 7.71% of ethanol concentration, and 4.21 min of extraction time. The maximum inhibitory effect on tyrosinase was 105.92% at 143.36 W of microwave power, 58.19% ethanol concentration, and 6.71 min of extraction time. The maximum superoxide dismutase like activity was 87.08% under the extraction conditions of 107.33 W of microwave power, 96.14% ethanol concentration, and 31.49 min of extraction time. The total polyphenol content showed a maximum of 475.86 mg% at 140.29 W of microwave power, 27.44% ethanol concentration, and 58.69 min of extraction time. Based on the superimposition of four-dimensional RSM data regarding the electron-donating ability, inhibitory effect on tyrosinase, superoxide dismutase like activity, and total polyphenol content, the optimum ranges of extraction conditions were found to be at 78~98 W of microwave power, 3~33% ethanol concentration, and 3.6~9 min of extraction time.

Microwave assisted extraction(MAE) is known as a more environmental friendly process with economic advantages in terms of less time, less solvent, less energy and less wastes than the current time consuming reflux method. It was applied to develop a rapid extraction method for soluble ginseng components that are major materials used for the processing of ginseng products. In a comparative study between pre established MAE(ethanol 60%, power 80 W, process time 4 min$\times$5) and current extraction method(ethanol 80%, temp. 85oC, time 8 hr$\times$5), MAE was more efficient than the current method to obtain an extract yield(soluble solid), but it was insufficient to extract individual ginsenosides, total phenols, reducing components and acidic polysaccharides. MAE with 80% ethanol by 5 times showed, however, that its extraction efficiency on soluble solid, crude saponin, major ginsenosides, and the other components was equal or superior to that of the current method, indicating that ethanol concentration is one of the critical parameters influencing the MAE process. The quality of ginseng extracts from MAE was assured by evaluating the corresponding standards and by comparing TLC and HPLC patterns with the control.
Background: In this study, microwave extraction was used, which is an effective method to extract useful bioactive substances as it requires low quantities of solvent and short time periods. The aim of this study was to determine the optimal extraction conditions for Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb. Methods and Results: The independent variables were ethanol concentration, microwave power, and extraction time, each of which had five levels. The dependent variables were total polyphenol and total flavonoid content, and DPPH radical scavenging activity. To determine the optimal extraction conditions for bioactive compounds, a response surface methodology was employed. Contour maps were generated from polynomial equations. The optimal conditions were then assumed by superimposing these contour maps. Based on the resulting graph, the optimal microwave extraction conditions for Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb were determined as 42 - 48% ethanol concentration, 240 - 280W microwave power, and 13 - 20 min of extraction time. Conclusions: Ethanol concentration had a significant effect on microwave extraction, in terms of total polyphenol and total flavonoid content, as well as DPPH radical scavenging activity. Microwave power and extraction time influenced the total polyphenol content, but not the total flavonoid content or the DPPH radical scavenging activity.
This study was undertaken in order to compare reflux extraction(RE) and microwave-assisted extraction(MAE) in extraction efficiency and establish optimum microwave extraction conditions in obtaining Ligularia fischeri extracts. A considerable reduction in extraction time was accomplished by MAE. When 70% methanol 50% methanol 70% ethanol, or 50% ethanol was used, MAE extract contained equal levels of soluble solid and total polyphenol as obtained by RE. The optimum microwave-assisted extraction conditions for Ligularia fischeri were achieved by 120∼150 watts of microwave energy and 4∼8 minutes of extraction time. No significant changes were found in antioxidant activity with DPPH scavenging method over the variation of microwave energy or extraction time. The use of diluted methanol or ethanol improved soluble solid content(30%), total polyphenol content(2.7%) and antioxidant activity(68%).
This study was conducted in order to compare reflux extraction(RE) and microwave-assisted extraction(MAE) in extraction efficiency and establish optimum microwave extraction conditions in obtaining Aster scaber Thunb extracts. Extraction time was reduced considerably in MAE. When 70% methanol, 50% methanol, 70% ethanol, or 50% ethanol was used, no difference was found in the amount of soluble solid and total phenol between MAE and RE. The optimum microwave-assisted extraction conditions for Aster scaber Thunb were achieved by 120-150 watts of microwave energy and 4∼8 minutes of extraction time. No significant changes were found in antioxidant activity using DPPH scavenging method over the variation of microwave power or extraction time. The use of diluted methanol or ethanol improved soluble solid content(30.8%), total polyphenol content(2.9%) and antioxidant activity(69% ).
