The physiologically relevant functional properties of various solvent extracts from Salicornia herbacea leaves were investigated by measuring lipid peroxidation, DPPH radical scavenging, nitrite scavenging, and xanthine oxidase inhibition. Ethyl ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate and n-butanol fractions obtained from the 80% aqueous ethanol extracts of Salicornia herbacea leaves showed strong antioxidative activities in linoleic acid methyl esters. Peroxide values (POV) were not significantly different among the samples treated with the different fractions; the incubation time required to reach a peroxide value of 80 meq/kg was about 40 hrs. However, control linoleic acid methyl esters had POV of more than 480 meq/kg after 40 hrs. The DPPH radical scavenging activity of the ethyl acetate fraction was much more effective than diethyl ether, n-butanol, chloroform and water fractions, with an $IC_{50}$/ of 279 $\mu\textrm{g}$/mL, but less effective than ascorbic acid ($IC_{50}$/ : 67 $\mu\textrm{g}$/mL). The nitrite scavenging activities of all fractions increased as pH decreased. Among the fractions, nitrite scavenging activities of diethyl ether and ethyl acetate fractions at pH 1.2 were highest at 59.0 and 56.2%, respectively. The diethyl ether fraction obtained from the 80% aqueous ethanol extract of Salicornia herbacea loaves was the most effective inhibitor of xanthine oxidase of all the solvent extracts at 84% inhibition for a 1 mg/mL concentration. These results suggest that Salicornia herbacea leaf extracts may be effective antioxidants, not only in food stability, but also in human health.
For the biological control of Phytophthora blight of red-pepper caused by Phytophthora capsici, an antibiotic-producing plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) Bacillus sp. KL 39 was selected from a local soil of Kyongbuk, Korea. The strain KL 39 was identified as Bacillus megaterium by various cultural, biochemical test and API and Microlog system. B. megaterium KL 39 could produce the highest antifungal antibiotic after 40 h of incubation under the optimal medium which was 0.4% fructose, 0.3% yeast extract, and 5 mM KCl at 30 C with initial pH 8.0. The antifungal antibiotic KL 39 was purified by Diaion HP-20 column, silica gel column, Sephadex LH-20 column, and HPLC. Its RF value was confirmed 0.32 by thin-layer chromatography with Ethanol:Ammonia:Water = 8:1:1. The crude antibiotic KL39 was active against a broad range of plant pathogenic fungi, Rhizoctonia solani, Pyricularia oryzae, Monilinia fructicola, Botrytis cinenea, Alteranria kikuchiana, Fusarium oxysporum and Fusarium solani. The purified antifungal antibiotic KL39 had a powerful biocontrol activity against red-pepper phytophthora blight disease with in vivo pot test as well as the strain B. megaterium KL 39.

Physiological activities of the 70% ethanol extract from boiled-water of Enteroctopus dofleini (BE) upon a gamma irradiation were determined to examine the possible use of the food processing by-product as a functional material for food or cosmetic composition. Electron donating ability and the content of total phenolic compounds increased from 65% to 72% and from 406 ppm to 476 ppm, respectively, by 10 kGy gamma irradiation. A Salmonella mutagenicity assay indicated that the gamma-irradiated BE did not show any mutagenicity. Tyrosinase inhibition activity of the irradiated BE also increased from 57% to 86% with irradiation doses. These results show that irradiation can be used to increase the physiological activities of BE for its potential use as food or cosmetic materials.
This study was carried out to identify bacterial strains adhered to domestic pet dog hair and to identify antibacterial extracts from natural compounds. A total of 76 strains were isolated from dog hair. The most common species isolated was Staphylococcus spp. (41 isolates), followed by Micrococcus spp. (21 isolates), Enterococcus spp. (8 isolates), Bacillus sup. (3 isolates), Exiguobacterium sup. (2 isolates), Shigella spp. (1 isolate) and Zoogloea spp. (1 isolate). These results suggested that dog hair could be a source of bacterial contamination to human. The susceptibility of isolates to antibiotics and antibacterial activities of the natural compounds were examined by disk diffusion method. Water and ethanol extract from Scutellaria baicalensis revealed high antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus, Micrococcus, Enterococcus and Shigella. Our results suggest that the extract of Scutellaria baicalensis can be used a antibacterial agent against the antibiotic-resistant microorganisms.

This study was indicated to enhance the anti-inflammation activities by the fermentation of the fruits of Aronia melanocarpa (Michx.) Elliott. The extracts by 70% ethanol (EE) showed better biological activities than those by hot water (WE) from campared result of the effect of extraction solvents. Then, the extract from 70% ethanol extraction was further fermented by lactic acid, denoted as FEE. For antioxidant activities, the FEE had showed the highest value as 0.832 of reducing powder, in comparison with those of EE and WE. Cytotoxicity of the water extraction (WE) was measured for 12.06% in addition of $1.0mg/m{\ell}$ of FEE. For anti-inflammation activities, NO production from the macrophage, RAW 264.7 was observed as $7.24{\mu}M$ and $8.52{\mu}M$ from FEE and EE, respectively. Prostaglandin $E_2$ ($PGE_2$) production from human fibroblast cell, CCD-986sk, was also estimated for $152pg/m{\ell}$ in addition of $1.0mg/m{\ell}$ of the FEE. The lowest production of both IL-6 and TNF-${\alpha}$ were $3.5pg/m{\ell}$ and $865.5pg/m{\ell}$, respectively in addition of $1.0mg/m{\ell}$ of the FEE, whereas $74.5pg/m{\ell}$ and $982.4pg/m{\ell}$ in treated with same concenrations of the EE. It was also found that the FEE was higher amounts than other extracts through HPLC analysis of the anthocyanins. These results strongly indicate that fermentation process of the lactic acid could enhance anti-inflammation activities of extracts by increasing the amounts of the anthocyanins, especially cyanidin-galactoside. Our results suggest that the application of the fermentation process for other medicinal herbs can be improved their biological activities.
Physiological functionalities in various extracts of Heugjinju rice bran were determined and its optimal extraction condition were also investigated Angiotensin-converting enzyme(ACE) inhibitory activity, fibrinolytic activity and tyrosinase inhibitory activity were higher in water extracts than those of 80% ethanol and methanol, hexane. Electron donating abilities were 97.8% in hexane extract and 83% in water extracts. ACE inhibitor was maximally extracted from Heugjinju rice bran when it was treated with 20 times of distilled water for 12 h at 20 $\^{C}$. Fibrinolytic compound was also maximally extracted by treatment of 10 times of distilled water for 18 h at 20 $\^{C}$. Electron donating compound and tyrosinase inhibitor were maximally extracted by treatment of 20 times of hexane and 10 times of distilled water at 20 $\^{C}$ for 18 h, respectively
Citron seed extracts (CSEs) were made using distilled water (CSEW), ethanol (CSEE), and n-hexane (CSEH), to measure the total polyphenol contents, DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities, and anti-complementary activity. The total polyphenol content was observed the highest in CSEE (188.71 ${\mu}g/mL$), and occurred in the following order: CSEE>CSEW (141.11 ${\mu}g/mL$)>CSEH (26.19 ${\mu}g/mL$) at 10 mg/mL. CSEE (63.56%) and CSEW (56.61%) showed significantly higher DPPH radical scavenging activities when compared with CSEH (28.57%). ABTS radical scavenging activities of CSEE (45.53%) and CSEW (40.02%) were also observed to be higher, whereas CSEH did not show ABTS radical scavenging activity. Anti-complementary activity of CSEE (26.85%) showed a greater activity than that of CSEW (7.84%) at 1,000 ${\mu}g/mL$. Limonin and nomilin contents had the highest values (1.882% and 2.089%) in CSEE, and with 0.327% and 0.139% in CSEW; however, CSEH showed relatively very low values at 0.061% and 0.026%, respectively. Among the CSEs tested, CSEE as a by-product from citron may provide an important source of dietary antioxidant compounds with rich polyphenol and limonoid contents, and immunopotentiating activity, including the complement activation factor.
The biological activities of Smilax china L. rhizome (SCR), hot water (SCRW) and 70% ethanol extract (SCRE) were analyzed. The total phenolic contents of SCRW and SCRE were 51.7 and 100.5 mg/g, respectively. The measured flavonoid content of SCRW ($67.7{\mu}g/g$) was almost double that of SCRE ($31.7{\mu}g/g$). SCRE ($IC_{50}=42.4{\mu}g/mL$) exhibited stronger antioxidant activity in the DPPH system than the positive control ${\alpha}$-tocopherol ($71.3{\mu}g/mL$) or butylated hydroxy anisole ($53.8{\mu}g/mL$) did. SCRE ($IC_{50}=50.3{\mu}g/mL$) also showed stronger ABTS radical scavenging activity, as did ${\alpha}$-tocopherol ($67.1{\mu}g/mL$). The SOD-like activity and Tyrosinase inhibition activity of SCRW and SCRE showed almost the same pattern. The best SOD-like activity and tyrosinase inhibition activity were measured as 24.9% and 20.3% in SCRW at $1,000{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. The cytotoxic effects of the SCR extracts were analyzed via MTT assay on human cancer and normal cells. SCRW and SCRE did not show cytotoxicity up to the concentration of $1,000{\mu}g/mL$ against the normal human cell line HEK293. Against human breast cancer cells (MCF-7), SCRW inhibited MCF-7 growth (by 27.6%) better than the anticancer drug cyclophosphamide (15.5%) at $1,000{\mu}g/mL$. SCRE ($1,000{\mu}g/mL$) inhibited the growth of human lung cancer cells A549 (37.6%) and human stomach cancer cells AGS (53.6%) more effective than did SCRW (21.0% and 35.4%) or CPA (22.2% and 31.7%). These results suggest the potential use of SCRE and SCRW as an excellent antioxidant and antiproliferative substance, respectively.
This study has attempted to examine the antioxidative effect of ethanol extracts, and the analysis of amino acid and sugar of hot water extracts from Artemisia princeps, Artemisia argyi and Artemisia iwayomogi. Total phenol contents were 10.2 mg/$m\ell$, 4.7 mg/$m\ell$, and 7.0 mg/$m\ell$ in A. princeps, A. argyi and A. iwayomogi, respectively. Also, flavonoid contents were 6.1 mg%, 3.6 mg%, and 1.8 mg% in A. princeps, A. argyi and A. iwayomogi, respectively. Hot water extract from A. argyi showed highest electron donating ability toward DPPH. The contents of total amino acid by HPLC analysis were in the increasing order of A. princeps, A. argyi and A. iwayomogi. Of amino acid compositions, proline was largest in examined Artemisia sp.. The contents of total sugar by HPLC analysis were largest in A. iwayomogi. Of the sugar compositions, the glucose content was largest in examined all Artemisia sp., and the fructose content was in the increasing order of A. iwayomogi, A. argyi and A. princeps.

This study was performed to investigate the functional properties and characteristics of Dolnamul (Sedum sarmentosum) as a cosmetic ingredient. Lyophilized sedum powder was extracted with ethanol and stored at $-20^{\circ}C$ for the following experiments. Total polyphenol compounds of the ethanol extract of sedum (SE) was $27.98{\pm}0.34g/kg$(dry weight): epicatechin ($162.14{\pm}5.07mg/kg$), epigallocatechin ($55.99{\pm}2.49mg/kg$), and kaempferol ($47.96{\pm}3.02mg/kg$) were contained in the SE. The SE had organic radical scavenging capacity ($78.43{\pm}1.08%$) and metal reducing power (FRAP value $2.54{\pm}0.12$). FTC and TBARS assays confirmed that the SE inhibited the early stage of lipid peroxidation ($62.03{\pm}0.38%$) as well as the final stage of lipid peroxidation ($55.36{\pm}2.05%$), respectively. The SE (5 mg/mL, dry weight) was proved to have antibacterial effect on the growth of Propionibacterium acnes. The inhibitory percentages of the SE on elastase and collagenase activities were $38.94{\pm}7.09%$ and $78.94{\pm}2.49%$, respectively. Compare to the control group, the SE treated group induced an increase of Col3A1 expression and collagen production ($58.11{\pm}1.07%$). The oil in water emulsion (0.5% SE adding group) showed pH 6.88 and 1.47 g/mL of density. The hardness changes of the SE adding emulsions were not detected during the stored periods at various temperatures ($-20-45^{\circ}C$) for four weeks. It is considered that the SE has antibacterial, antioxidant, and antiaging activities.
