  • This study is to find out the meaning of the death in Donne's "Holy Sonnets" and divine poems. Death issue is the important theme and is used frequently in his poems. He expresses an assertion of faith about the defeat of death and wishes to gain new birth and eternal life through death. Ironically death must be died for rebirth and an inevitable death. Death is another way to get new life and return to Christ. Many readers think that "Hymn to God my god, in my sickness" is Donne's most distinguished achievement in his divine poems. The poem shows that death must be accepted willingly because it is only through death that man can reach heavenly bliss and gain new life. He develops an antithetic parallel between two hills and two trees. Paradise and Adam's tree which brought death into the world are related analogically to Calvary and the Cross, which brought resurrection and eternal life. Death and resurrection are shown to be conjoined in the poem. To sum up, Donne tried to pursuit death for rebirth and modeled after Christ's death and Resurrection.

  • In archeological aspects the 4th-6th centuries of the Silla kingdom has been callded the era of wooden chamber tombs with pebble and earth mounds(jeokseokmokwakbun). Moreover, the era is also regarded the age of the traditional and 'primitive' Korean religion which originated from inside the Korean Peninsula or the kingdom. However, the tombs and their burial accessories reveal that it is Taoism, not shamanism, that prevailed throughout the silla kingdom and its people during the jeokseokmokwakbun period. Above all things, almost all of the tombs excavated up to date yield in great quantities cinnabar and mica, which have been considered the best elixir of life in the Taoist world. Moreover the instruments to make the medicine for the deceased has been founded inside a tomb. The jeokseokmokwakbun tombs are famous for their great amount of buried articles and their grand scale. The tombs also have a large amount of gold, silver and beads, which are all thought to be the other cure-alls in taoism. Then why the silla people made the tombs and buried those elixirs of life for the deceased? The best answer we can imagine is this : for eternal living! In other words, cinnabar and mica are for the everlasting life of the deceased, the tombs were desingned as the 'eternal house' where the dead are living a immortal life. Needless to say, immortal living, even after he or she dies, is the ultimate purpose of taoism.

  • In quantum mechanics, uncertainty refers to the uncertainty of a measurement physical quantity, because some mechanical quantity can only be in its eigenstate under certain conditions, and the values shown are discrete. The exact value can only be obtained by measuring it in the eigenstate of this mechanical quantity.Uncertainty is like a double-edged sword, which has both advantages and disadvantages in art itself and in the process of artistic creation. In this study, it is divided into three main parts. First, the existence of uncertainties in contemporary art is sorted out in two broad parts, the definition of the uncertainties in art and the specific expression in contemporary art, respectively, with examples from four aspects of psychological impact, accidental presentation effect, expression form and connection with the viewer. The purpose is to understand how uncertainties are expressed in the process of artistic creation. Second, the role of the uncertainties in artistic creation is analyzed through examples, and then it is proposed that artists should use uncertainties to serve art with a scientific and rational attitude. Thirdly, the application of uncertainties in my creative practice and their influences on my painting creation. In summary, every artistic creator should take art seriously and sincerely. The relationship among the creative subject, society and life is an eternal and continuous interaction, and art is a carrier of reflection. For the problems brought by uncertainties in artistic creation, from choosing new certainty by thinking to the emergence of uncertainties, such a cycle is the process of art sublimating from life and being closely related to life.

  • Keats is a poet who was in pursuit of 'the beautiful'. He tried to show various structures in his poetry to search for 'eternal pleasure'. These are explained in terms of 'metamorphosis', 'travel structure' and 'metamorphosis patterns', but put together, these can be expressed as simple terms of a dramatic structure. Especially We can assume this dramatic structure is the key to access his poetry on the basis of the fact that Keats always admired the world of drama and respected Shakespeare most. We can see Keats' dramatic structure in his poetry Ode to a Nightingale, Ode on a Grecian Urn. To Autumn and so on, and in these three poems, he was very successful in achieving unique poetic expression by inducing tension structure' through the dramatic structure of Introduction - development - crisis - climax - ending. In conclusion, his poetry achieved success in that he made clear his central theme, the pursuit of a beautiful and happy life through the application of a dramatic structure.

  • From the ancient times, incense was used for various usages including a means of beauty expression with flavor, a medicine for disease treatment and a device for religious event or ritual. The period of T'ang was the times when cultural and material exchanges with foreign countries were very actively made under the political openness of the Chinese nation. Here the exchanges were made mainly through inland trade, called Silk Road(絲綢之路) and marine trade routes, Incense Road(香料之路). This indicates that incense was one of the main items actively traded at that time. In addition, literatures of the T'ang period show that in the Chinese nation, a wide range of classes from the imperial family to the public used incense for many different purposes. This suggests that the culture of incense was deeply prevailed and very socially significant in T'ang. This study investigated social factors that promoted the incense culture of T'ang and the applications and types of incense widely used in the period of T'ang. First, influential religions and the openness of sex culture were main social factors that made incense culture flourish in the period of T'ang. Above all, two main religions of the Chinese nation, Buddhism and Taoism became secularized under political protection by the imperial family. As Buddhism was popularized, the Buddhist ritual of incense burning made a contribution to making public incense culture. Providing its doctrines of eternal youth and eternal life, Taoism necessarily used incense to form a Taoistic climate. The flourishment of the foresaid religion in T'ang added more fuel to that of incense culture in the Chinese nation. The openness of sex culture brought about the Inauguration of the empress, improvement in female position and free relationships between man and woman. It was accelerated by sexology as a method of eternal youth provided by Taoism. The opened culture also developed the culture of kibang where female entertainers called kinyeo consumed lots of incense for decoration and sexual desire stimulation. These open climates of T'ang society made a great contribution to making incense culture, especially for decoration, prevailed throughout the Chinese nation. Second, types of incense prevailed and widely used in the period of T'ang included olive incense, germander(廣藿香), olibnum(乳香), myrrh Resinoid(沒藥), jia Xiang(甲香), clove(丁香) and Shen xian(沈香), all of which were imported from foreign nations and had various applications. Specifically, olive incense, germander(廣藿香), olibnum(乳香) and myrrh Resinoid(沒藥) were used for religious purposes while, jia Xiang(甲香), clove(丁香) and Shen xian(沈香) for the purposes of religion and decoration. In conclusion, a number of social factors including political, religious and medical purposes and the openness of sex culture set fundamentals on which the culture of incense was extensively developed and established as a social trend in T'ang. In the Chinese nation, incense culture was not just an option for taste, but a part of life style social members needed to know. People of T'ang not only enjoyed incense mainly for purposes of religion, pleasure and make-up, but also had the wisdom to know various effects of incense, curiosity about such new things and the will to imitate and pursue alien culture, resultantly flourishing incense culture. Thus the culture of incense represented many social aspects of T'ang.
