  • An Ecocomplex is proposed for ecological design of the estuarine environment of Han River, which is designed upon an alternative mamagement concept of estuarine environment. The concept reveals interrelationships among estuary, delta region and urban inland with inputs/outputs and feedbacks among them. The Ecocomplex emphasizes an integration of wastewater treatment with aquaculture, agriculture and recreation, and carries out ecological treatment, recycling, and harvest processes. A module of wastewater treatment pond system is employed in the Ecocomplex, which treats a flow of 3,786 ㎥/day and is composed of a four-facultative-pond series. Treatment ponds stabilize wastewater discharged from the urban area, and concurrently produce algae for commercial or recreational fish farming. Effluent from treatment and fish ponds is reused for agricultural production. Through the waste-algae-fish-vegetable-recreation processes, wastewater from the urban settlement is recycled back to the urban ecosystem. This resource-conserving design approach can maintain a sustainable urban ecosystem, managing an estuarine environment more naturally, healthly, and economically.

  • Seasonal variation in species composition of fish in the Geum River estuary was determined using monthly samples collected with a bag net from February to December 2003. Of a total of seventy-three species collected, four groups of fishes were distinguished. Estuarine fishes such as Chelon haematocheilus and Synechogobius hasta were collected almost all the seasons and predominated in abundance during cold months. Coastal fish species such as Sardinella zunasi, Konosirus punctatus, Engraulis japonicus, Johnius grypotus and Thryssa kammalensis were dominated from late spring to autumn. Their adults entered into the estuary in spring and a large number of their juveniles were collected in summer and autumn till moving out to deeper waters for over-wintering. A few freshwater fishes were collected when the freshwater was discharged during the rainy season. Anguilla japonica elvers (diadromous fish) and Coilia nasus (amphidromous fish) were collected in spring during their upstream migration. The principal component analysis revealed that the seasonal variation in species composition of fishes was principally determined by water temperature and/or water temperature related factors.

  • Seasonal variation in species composition of fish in the estuary of Saemangeum water in the western coast of Korea was determined using seasonal samples collected by an otter trawl from April 2001 to February 2002. Species compositions did not differ significantly among the 4 stations (p>0.05, Wilcoxon signed-rank test). The cumulative number of species and species diversity (H') approached asymptote after four 30-min trawl hauls. Therefore 30-min trawl samples from each of the four stations were pooled to represent each season. A total of 45 species 2758 individuals and 30,346.8 g of fish were collected during the study period. Of the fish collected Leiognathus nuchalis, Synechogobius hasta, Neosalanx jordani, Konosirus punctatus and Chaeturichthys stigmatias predominated in abundance accounting for $68\%$ of the total number of individuals. Seasonal variation of fish abundance showed a similar trend to those of the other western coastal waters of Korea. The resident species were collected only in spring and autumn. Number of species and biomass were highest in summer due to the catch of many migrating species. In winter catch amount was low, and only 7 species were collected.. Brackish water fishes were more abundant in the study area, and Johnius grypotus and Cynoglossus joyneri were not premominated compared to the other coastal waters. This difference in species compositions may be related to the lower salinity in this estuarine habitat than in the other western coastal waters of Korea.

  • The source of human infection with intestinal flukes was surveyed in estuarine fishes, including the dotted gizzard shad, common sea bass, common blackish goby, redlip mullet, black sea bream, and oyster collected from Muan-gun, Jeollanam-do, Korea during August and September 2007. Collected fishes and oysters were artificially digested in pepsin-HCl solution and examined under a stereomicroscope. In 36 shads (Konosirus punctatus) and 20 basses (Lateolabrax japonicus) examined, Heterophyopsis continua metacercariae were found in 58.3% and 100%, and their average numbers were 12.0 and 6.3 per infected fish, respectively. In 34 gobies (Acanthogobius flavimanus) examined, metacercariae of H. continua were detected in 79.4%, Stictodora lari in 97.1%, and Acanthotrema felis in 92.1%, and their average numbers were 45.8, 189.3, and 235.3 per infected fish, respectively. In 37 redlip mullets (Chelon haematocheilus), Heterophyes nocens metacercariae were found in 56.8%, Pygidiopsis summa in 94.6%, and Stictodora fuscata in 45.9%, and the average metacercarial densities were 17.4, 31.3, and 35.1 per infected fish, respectively. In 30 black sea breams (Acanthopagrus schlegeli) and 45 oysters (Crassostrea gigas) examined, no metacercariae were detected. From the above results, it has been confirmed that the dotted gizzard shad, common sea bass, common blackish goby, and redlip mullet from Muan-gun, Jeollanam-do, Korea are infected with the metacercariae of heterophyid flukes.

  • With characteristics of river continuum, stream ecosystems have diverse components and environments from upstream channel to estuarine area. Therefore, the habitat requirements and composition of conservative object should be well understood before applying any improvement measure. In this paper, the causes of stream habitat changes were first illustrated with the categories and principles of habitat restoration methods. The structural restoration techniques of fish habitat improvement utilized by the authors or one three-year research project starting at 1990 were then presented. Through the introductions on the project background, planning guidelines, structure design, and ecological evaluation, this paper tried to provide some effective examples of stream restoration practices that ecological expert was invited for cooperation and advising.

  • Background: The flathead grey mullet Mugil cephalus has the widest distribution among mugilid species. Recent studies based on mitochondrial DNA sequences showed that the species comprises at least 14 different groups, three of which occur in the northwest Pacific. We analyzed the otolith microchemistry of M. cephalus at several locations in Korea to improve understanding of migration pattern and population origin. Results: We collected 123 sagittal otoliths from seven locations and determined their concentrations of eight elements (7Li, 24Mg, 55Mn, 57Fe, 60Ni, 63Cu, 88Sr, and 138Ba) using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Mean otolith elemental ratios differed significantly among the locations. The Sr:Ca, Fe:Ca, and Ba:Ca ratios were significantly higher than others, and useful chemical signatures for investigating the habitat use of M. cephalus populations. We identified five diverse and complicated migration patterns using the otolith data that we collected: estuarine resident (type I), freshwater migrant (type II), estuarine migrant (type III), seawater resident (type IV), and seawater migrant (type V). A canonical discriminant analysis plot revealed separation of two groups (type II in the Yellow Sea vs. other types in remaining locations). Two locations on Jeju Island, despite their close proximity, had fish with quite different migration patterns, corroborating previous molecular studies that distinguished two groups of fishes. Conclusion: We successfully showed that the migration patterns of the Korean mullet varied by location. Only fish from the western sector of Jeju had a unique migration pattern, which is likely confined population in this area. Among the eight otolith elements measured, the Sr:Ca ratio was found to be the best indicator of migration pattern and population origin.

  • To investigate the ichthyofauna and habitat type of the fish in Tamjin River system, Korea, fishes were collected with cast net ($5{\times}5\;mm$, $8{\times}8\;mm$) and dip net ($4{\times}4\;mm$) at eight stations seasonally during five years from 2000 to 2004. 56 species belonging to 18 families were collected and 15 Korean endemic species( 26.8%) were investigated. While Coreoperca kawamebari was occurred at every station, the number of individuals and composition were decreased. Anguilla marmorata was not collected and the exotic species didn't appeared. Dominant species were Zacco platypus(34.2%), Squalidus gracilis majimae (9.4%), Microphysogobio yaluensis(8.1%), Zacco temmincki(6.8%) and Acheilognathus lanceolatus(5.1%). The surveyed stations were clustered into 3 groups: up stream, main stream and estuary. With the cluster analysis using the relative abundance of major fishes at each habitat, fishes were separated into 5 habitat types: U (upstream type), UM (up and main stream type), M (main stream), ME (main stream and estuarine type), and E (estuarine type).
