This paper deals with the comparison of parameter estimation methods in a 3-parameter Kappa distribution which is sometimes used in flood frequency analysis. Method of moment estimation(MME), L-moment estimation(L-ME), and maximum likelihood estimation(MLE) are applied to estimate three parameters. The performance of these methods are compared by Monte-carlo simulations. Especially for computing MME and L-ME, three dimensional nonlinear equations are simplified to one dimensional equation which is calculated by the Newton-Raphson iteration under constraint. Based on the criterion of the mean squared error, L-ME (or MME) is recommended to use for small sample size( n$\le$100) while MLE is good for large sample size.

Software cost and schedule estimation is usually based on the estimated size of the software. Advanced estimation techniques also make use of the diverse factors viz, nature of the project, staff skills available, time constraints, performance constraints, technology required and so on. Usually, estimation is based on an estimation model prepared with the help of experienced project managers. Estimation of software cost is predominantly a crucial activity as it incurs huge economic and strategic investment. However accurate estimation still remains a challenge as the algorithmic models used for Software Project planning and Estimation doesn't address the true dynamic nature of Software Development. This paper presents an efficient approach using the contemporary Constructive Cost Model (COCOMO) augmented with the desirable feature of fuzzy logic to address the uncertainty and flexibility associated with the cost drivers (Effort Multiplier Factor). The approach has been validated and interpreted by project experts and shows convincing results as compared to simple algorithmic models.
Motion Estimation/compensation(ME/MC) is one of the efficient interframe ceding techniques for its ability to reduce the high redundancy between successive frames of an image sequence. Calculating the blocking matching takes most of the encoding time. In this paper a new fast block matching algorithm(BMA) is developed for motion estimation and for reduction of the computation time to search motion vectors. The feature of the new algorithm comes from the center-biased checking concept and the trend of pixel movements. At first, Motion Vector(MV) is searched in ${\pm}$1 of search area and then the motion estimation is exploited in the rest block. The ASP and MSE of the proposed search algorithm show good performance.

We consider quantization optimized for distributed estimation, where a set of sensors at different sites collect measurements on the parameter of interest, quantize them, and transmit the quantized data to a fusion node, which then estimates the parameter. Here, we propose an iterative quantizer design algorithm with a weighted distance rule that allows us to reduce a system-wide metric such as the estimation error by constructing quantization partitions with their optimal weights. We show that the search for the weights, the most expensive computational step in the algorithm, can be conducted in a sequential manner without deviating from convergence, leading to a significant reduction in design complexity. Our experments demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves improved performance over traditional quantizer designs. The benefit of the proposed technique is further illustrated by the experiments providing similar estimation performance with much lower complexity as compared to the recently published novel algorithms.

In this paper, a frequency domain Expectation-Maximization (EM)-based channel estimation algorithm for Space Time Block Coded-Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (STBC-OFDM) systems is investigated to support higher data rate applications in wireless communications. The computational complexity of the frequency domain EM-based channel estimation is increased when higher order constellations are used because of the ascending size of the search set space. Thus, a search set reduction algorithm is proposed to decrease the complexity without sacrificing the system performance. The performance results of the proposed algorithm is obtained in terms of Bit Error Rate (BER) and Mean Square Error (MSE) for 16QAM and 64QAM modulation schemes.

In the vector-controlled induction machine drive, mechanical sensors restrict the wide applications of high performance AC drives. So in resent years, many papers have been presented which doesn't need mechanical sensors, named by sensorless vector control. But sensorless control has a few serious problem, one of which Is poor speed estimation in case of incorrect rotor resistance (Rr) information. This paper describes the stator flux orientation speed control strategy with the speed estimation algorithm. and the method of adapting Rr change due to thermal heating. By proposed method. We can acquire precise speed estimation and higher performance.
In this paper we address the problem of detecting and estimating an unknown narrow band signal in a noise interference environment A new practical band estimation method, yielding good performance even in case of finite-length data, is presented. More specifically, wavelet packet transform is utilized to detect the more accurate time-variant band, then we estimate the power from wavelet filter-coefficients of the respective band. Also, third-order cumulants, and projection cross-correlation (PCC) criterion are utilized to achieve an effective SNR improvement for the time-variant band estimation. In case of time variant band estimation, the PCC method yields better performance than the correlation method.
This paper presents a design method of the continuous inertial binary observer which includes the rotor flux and speed estimations. The sliding observer based on the variable structure theory ensures the robustness of disturbance and is applied for the method to keep an insensitivity for the variations of parameter. Sliding observer, however, has a high-frequency chattering deteriorating the state estimation performance. To reduce the chattering on the sliding surface in sliding observer and improve the estimation performance, binary observer scheme which has main advantages such as the absence of high-frequency chattering and the finite gains is applied in this paper. Computer simulation results show the effectiveness of binary observer proposed here for the induction motor drives.

A driving load estimation method for intelligent cruise control(ICC) vehicles has been proposed in this paper. Vehicle driving load is one of the most important factors of perturbations in vehicle control and can affect the control performance critically. The effect of the control with driving load estimation on vehicle-to-vehicle distance control has been presented and investigated via computer simulations and vehicle tests. The results show that vehicle-driving-load-adaptive control can provide an ICC system with a good acceleration tracking performance. In addition, the results show that driving load estimation can compensate not only the variation of driving load but also the modeling errors.
In this study, we investigated alignment state estimation performances of the three methods i.e. merit function regression (MFR), differential wavefront sampling (DWS) and Multiple Design Configuration Optimization (MDCO). The three target optical systems are 1) a two-mirror Cassegrain system for deep space Earth observation, 2) intermediate size three-mirror anastigmat for Earth ocean monitoring, and 3) extremely large segmented optical system for astronomical observation. We ran alignment state estimation simulation for several alignment perturbation cases including 1mm to 10mm in decenter and from 0.1 to 1 degree in tilt perturbation error for the two-mirror Cassegrain system. In general, we note that MDCO shows more competitive estimation performance than MFR and DWS. The computational concept, case definition and the simulation results are discussed with implications to future works.
