  • This paper invetigates estimation methods of mapping parameters in object-oriented coding. In this paper, we propose a fast parameter estimation method with its performance similar to that of the conventional methods. We employ hierarchical structure in difference images to redcue the computational complexity and also combine conventional six- and eight-mapping parameter estimation methods to compensate for the performance degradation caused by employment of hierarchical structure. Computer simulation shows that the proposed mehtod gives results similar to conventional methods with greatly reduced computational complexity.

  • Damage estimation methods are classified into two groups according to the dependence on the FE model : signal-based and model-based methods. Signal-based damage estimation methods are generally appropriate for detection of damage location, whereas not effective for estimation of damage severities. Model-based damage estimation methods are difficult to apply directly to the structures with a large number of the probable damaged members. It is difficult to obtain the exact model representing the real bridge behavior due to the modeling errors. The modeling errors even may exceed the modal sensitivity on damage. In this study, Model-based damage detection method which can effectively consider the modeling errors is suggested. Two numerical example analyses on a simple beam and a multi-girder bridge are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the presented method.

  • Diffusion is a basic mathematical tool for modern financial engineering. The theory of the estimation methods for diffusion models is an important topic of the financial engineering. Many researches have been tried to apply the likelihood estimation method for estimating diffusion models. However, the likelihood estimation method for diffusion is complicated and needs much amount of computing. In this paper we develop the estimation methods which are simple enough to be compared to the Euler approximation method, and efficient enough statistically to be compared to the likelihood estimation method. We devise pseudo-likelihood and propose the maximum pseudo-likelihood estimation methods. The pseudo-likelihoods are obtained by approximating the transition density with normal distributions. The means and the variances of the distributions are obtained from the delta expansion suggested by Lee, Song and Lee (2012). We compare the newly suggested estimators with other existing estimators by simulation study. From the simulation study we find the maximum pseudo-likelihood estimator has very similar properties with the maximum likelihood estimator. Also the maximum pseudo-likelihood estimator is easy to apply to general diffusion models, and can be obtained by simple numerical steps.

  • Geomechanical parameters are important factors for engineering projects during design, construction and support stages of tunnel and dam projects. Geostatistical estimation methods are known as one of the most significant approach at estimation of Geomechanical parameters. In this study, Azad dam headrace tunnel is chosen to estimate Geomechanical parameters such as Rock Quality Designation (RQD) and uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) by ordinary kriging as a geostatistical method. Also Rock Mass Rating (RMR) distribution is presented along the tunnel. Main aim in employment of geostatistical methods is estimation of points that unsampled by sampled points. To estimation of parameters, initially data are transformed to Gaussian distribution, next structural data analysis is completed, and then ordinary kriging is applied. At end, specified distribution maps for each parameter are presented. Results from the geostatistical estimation method and actual data have been compared. Results show that, the estimated parameters with this method are very close to the actual parameters. Regarding to the reduction of costs and time consuming, this method can use to geomechanical estimation.

  • We compared two nondestructive methods for leaf area estimation using leaves of 16 common plant species classified into six types depending on leaf shape. Relatively good linear relationships between actual leaf area (LA) and leaf length (L), width (W), or the product of length and width (LW) were found for ordinary leaves with lanceolate, oblanceolate, linear and sagitttate shapes with entire margins, serrate margins, mixed margins with a entire form and shallow lobes, and ordinary incised margins. LA was better correlated with LW than L or W, with $R^2$ > 0.91. However, for deeply incised lobes, LA estimation using LW showed low correlation coefficient values, indicating low accuracy. On the other hand, a method using photographic paper showed a good correlation between estimates of area based on the mass of a cut-out leaf image on a photographic sheet (PW) and actual leaf area for all types of leaf shape. Thus, the PW method for LA estimation can be applied to all shapes of leaf with high accuracy. The PW method takes a little more time and has a higher cost than leaf estimation methods using LW based on leaf dimensions. These results indicate that researchers should choose their nondestructive LA estimation method according to their research goals.

  • This paper derives three estimation methods for the between group variance component for serially correlated random model. To compare their estimation capability, three designs having different degree of unbalancedness are considered. The so-called empirical quantile dispersion graphs(EQDGs) used to compare estimation methods as well as designs. The proposed conditional ANOVA estimation is robust for design unbalancedness, however, ML estimation is preferred to the conditional AOVA and REML estimation regardless of design unbalancedness and correlation coefficient.

  • In this paper, we present an effective single image fog removal by using the Joint Bright and Dark Channel (JBDC) and pixel-based transmission estimation to enhance the visibility of outdoor images susceptible to degradation due to weather and environmental conditions. The conventional methods include refinement process of coarse transmission with heavy computational complexity. The proposed transmission estimation reveals excellent edge-preserving performance and does not require the refinement process. We estimate the atmospheric light in pixel-based fashion, which can improve the transmission estimation performance and visual quality of the restored image. Moreover, we propose an adaptive transmission estimation to enhance the visual quality specifically in sky regions. Comprehensive experiments on various fog images show that the proposed method exhibits reduced computational complexity and excellent fog removal performance, compared with the existing methods; thus, it can be applied to various fields including real-time devices.

  • In this paper, we proposed a nonlinear hierarchical mtion estimation method. Generally, the conventional hierarchical motion estimation methods have been proposed for fast convergence and detection of large motions. But they have a common drawback that large error in motion estimation is propapated across motion discontinuities. This artifiact is due to the constriaint of motion continuity and the linear interpolation of motion vectors between hierarchical levels. In this paper, we propose an effective hierarchical motion estimation mechod that is robust to motion discontinuities. The proposed algorithm is based on the decomposition of the functional domain for optimizing the intra-level motion estimation functional. Also, we propose an inter-level nonlinear motion estimation equation rather than using the conventional linearprojection scheme of motion field. computer simulations with several test sequences show tht the proposed algorithm performs better than several conventional methods.

  • Objective: First-in-human dose estimation is an essential approach for successful clinical trials for drug development. In this study, we systematically compared first-in-human dose and human pharmacokinetic parameter estimation approaches. Methods: First-in-human dose estimation approaches divided into similar drug comparison approaches, regulatory guidance based approaches, and pharmacokinetic based approaches. Human clearance, volume of distribution and bioavailability were classified for human pharmacokinetic parameter estimation approaches. Results: Similar drug comparison approaches is simple and appropriate me-too drug. Regulatory guidance based approaches is recommended from US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and European Medicines Agency (EMA) regarding no-observed-adverse-effect level (NOAEL) or minimum anticipated biological effect level (MABEL). Pharmacokinetic based approaches are 8 approaches for human clearance estimation, 5 approaches for human volume of distribution, and 4 approaches for human bioavailability. Conclusion: This study introduced and compared all methods for first-in-human dose estimation. It would be useful practically to estimate first-in-human dose for drug development.

  • In Korea, cooling power load, which occupies about 20% of peak load in 2000 and fluctuates depending on the popular usage of air conditioning systems, has been recently the focus of the load management. The first work of KEPCO (Korea Electric Power Corporation) to regulate cooling load as low as possible was to estimate its approximate scale and to develop the indirect methods to estimate it from the available time series data for the average hourly loads. However, KEPCO would like to have their methods improved both theoretically and practically. In this paper, we analyze their current indirect methods and detect their faults to design better indirect estimation methods. Under one of the assumptions of "no cooling load in April or May", the linear relationship between basic loads and GDP's, and the normalized seasonal factors of the Winters' multiplicative seasonal model, we provide ten indirect estimation methods in total and suggest the estimated cooling load(1988-1999) based on our various indirect methods.
