  • Estimating the reference evapotranspiration is an important factor to consider in irrigation system design and agricultural water use. However, there is a limitation in using the FAO Penman-Monteith (FAO P-M) equation, which requires various meteorological data. The purpose of this study is to compare three reference evapotranspiration (ETo) equations in the case of meteorological data missing for 11 study weather stations. Firstly, the FAO P-M equation is used for reference potential evapotranspiration estimation with the actual solar radiation data $R_n$ and the actual vapor pressure $e_a$. Then, in the case of $R_n$, and $e_a$ are missed, the reference evapotranspirations applying FAO P-M, Priestley-Taylor (P-T), Hargreaves (HG) equation were calculated using other meteorological factors. Secondly, MAE, RMSE, $R^2$ were calculated to compare ETo relationship from the ETo equations. From the results, ETo with Hargreaves equation in coastal areas and the Priestley-Taylor equation in the inland areas showed relatively high correlation with FAO P-M when $e_a$ data is missed. In the case of $R_n$ data is missed or two weather data, $e_a$, and $R_n$ data are all missed, $R^2$ value in Priestley-Taylor equation was highest in coastal areas, and $R^2$ values in Hargreaves equation were the high values for 7 inland areas. The results of sensitivity analysis showed that net radiation was the most sensitive for P-T and HG equation, and for FAO P-M, the most sensitive factor was net radiation and relative humidity, air temperature and wind speed were follows. Therefore, in considering of the accessibility to the coast, the types of the missing wether data, and the correlation and the magnitude of error, the reference evapotranspiration equations would be selected in sense of different conditions.

  • In this paper, we propose the methodology of prediction of field strength for a digital television (DTV) receiver by virtue of Recommendation ITU-R P.1546. The curves shown in this recommendation represent the point-to area field strength for 1.0 kW effective radiated power in the 30 MHz ~ 3000 MHz. Based upon the procedures described in this Recommendation, computation results are presented here from the derived formulation of field strength for DTV receiver. To show the validity of this method, some results are compared with the analysis by Okumura-Hata model and it was shown that the error of field strength is in the range of 6.9 ~ 11.5 %. The presented method provides not only the predicted values of field strength for DTV receiving area to check the quality of transmitted signal, but also an appropriate site selection for obtaining good propagation environment. In addition, it can be directly used for analyzing the protection ratio or separated distance for frequency sharing in the same band.

  • Numerical simulations were carried out to investigate the impact of SST spatial distribution on the result of air quality modeling. Eulerian photochemical dispersion model CAMx (Comprehensive Air quality Model with eXtensions, version 4.50) was applied in this study and meteorological fields were prepared by RAMS (Regional Atmospheric Modeling System). Three different meteorological fields, due to different SST spatial distributions were used for air quality modeling to assess the sensitivity of CAMx modeling to the different meteorological input data. The horizontal distributions of surface ozone concentrations were analyzed and compared. In each case, the simulated ozone concentrations were different due to the discrepancies of horizontal SST distributions. The discrepancies of land-sea breeze velocity caused the difference of daytime and nighttime ozone concentrations. The result of statistic analysis also showed differences for each case. Case NG, which used meteorological fields with high resolution SST data was most successfully estimated correlation coefficient, root mean squared error and index of agreement value for ground level ozone concentration. The prediction accuracy was also improved clearly for case NG. In conclusion, the results suggest that SST spatial distribution plays an important role in the results of air quality modeling on high ozone episode at coastal region.

  • The HEC-HMS model was applied to identify the rainfall-runoff processes for the Anseongchun basin, where the lower part of the stream has been damaged severely by tropical storms in the past. Modeling processes include incorporating with the SCS-CN model for loss, Clark's UH model for transformation, exponential recession model for baseflow, and Muskingum model for channel routing. The parameters were calibrated through an optimization technique using a trial and error method. Sensitivity analysis after calibration was performed to understand the effects of parameters, such as the time of concentration, storage coefficient, and base flow related constants. Two storm water events were simulated by the model and compared with the corresponding observations. Good accuracy in predicting the runoff volume, peak flow, and the time to peak flow was achieved using the selected methods. The results of this study can be used as a useful tool for decision makers to determine a master plan for regional flood control management.

  • We propose an asymmetrical 2.5 Gbps / 622 Mbps bidirectional optical subscriber network with Manchester coded downstream and NRZ (Non-Return-to-Zero) upstream remodulation. The proposed system has important characteristics in the optical network unit (ONU): it does not require a light source or the usual control circuits such as wavelength control and output power control, and it is possible to use a synchronization scheme between upstream and downstream data. We theoretically analyze BER(Bit Error Rate) performance of upstream data remodulated with Manchester coded downstream according to the types of NRZ downstream data and perform simulations with MATLAB. The BER performance and the receiver sensitivity have been improved by 3 dB by adjusting threshold levels compared to the conventional receiver. The results have shown the remodulation scheme with Manchester coded downstream could be a useful technology for asynchronous and asymmetric optical subscriber networks with low cost and simple structures.

  • A SCARA type direct drive robot which can be used in the assembly operation was designed and manufactured. Graphite fiber epoxy composite material was used in the fabrication of the robot arm structure in order to improve the speed of the robot arm with a high damping effect. For model-based control and sensitivity analysis of system parameters, the dynamic model of robot arm and drive servo amplifier parameters such as equivalent gains of PWM driver and velocity gains of servo system were estimated from frequency response tests. The complete dynamic model for overall robot system was used in the simulation of the open-loop control. The simulation results agreed reasonably well to the experimental results. The feedforward control using the dynamic models improved the trajectory tracking performance, decreasing the tracking error by factor of three compared with PID control. This study found that the inverse dynamic model of the robot arm including the drive servo system showed better performances than the case of arm dynamic model only.

  • The UV radiometer payload was launched successfully from the west coastal area of Korea Peninsula aboard KSR-III on 28, Nov 2002. KSR-III was the Korean third generation sounding rocket and was developed as intermediate step to larger space launch vehicle with liquid propulsion engine system. UV radiometer onboard KSR-III consists of UV and visible band optical phototubes to measure the direct solar attenuation during rocket ascending phase. For UV detection, 4 channel of sensors were installed in electronics payload section and each channel has 255, 290, 310nm center wavelengths, respectively. 450nm channel was used as reference for correction of the rocket attitude during the flight. Transmission characteristics of all channels were calibrated precisely prior to the flight test at the Optical Lab. in KARI (Korea Aerospace Research Institute). During a total of 231s flight time, the onboard data telemetered to the ground station in real time. The ozone column density was calculated by this telemetry raw data. From the calculated column density, the vertical ozone profile over Korea Peninsula was obtained with sensor calibration data. Our results had reasonable agreements compared with various observations such as ground Umkhr measurement at Yonsei site, ozonesonde at Pohang site, and satellite measurements of HALOE and POAM. The sensitivity analysis of retrieval algorithm for parameters was performed and it was provided that significant error sources of the retrieval algorithm.

  • We studied the characteristics of spatial distribution of global wave height and carried out the modelsensitivity test by changing the input field, model resolution and physical factor (effective wind factor) since the spatial and temporal resolution in wind wave forecasting is one of most important factors. Comparisons among the different cases, and also between model, buoy and satellite data have been made. As a results of the wind-wave model run using the high resolution wind field, the bias of significant wave height showed the positive tendency and the Root-Mean Square Error(RMSE) was a bit decreased based on the comparison with buoy data. When the model resolution was changed to higher, the bias and RMSE was increased, and as the effective wind factor was smaller than default value(= 1.4) the bias and RMSE showed also decreasing pattern.

  • The basic oxygen furnace (BOF) steelmaking process in the steel industry is highly complicated, and subject to variations in raw material composition. During the BOF steelmaking process, it is essential to maintain the carbon content and the endpoint temperature at their set points in the liquid steel. This paper presents intelligent models used to estimate the endpoint temperature in the basic oxygen furnace (BOF) steelmaking process. An artificial neural network (ANN) model and a least-squares support vector machine (LSSVM) model are proposed and their estimation performance compared. The classical partial least-squares (PLS) method was also compared with the others. Results of the estimations using the ANN, LSSVM and PLS models were compared with the operation data, and the root-mean square error (RMSE) for each model was calculated to evaluate estimation performance. The RMSE of the LSSVM model 15.91, which turned out to be the best estimation. RMSE values for the ANN and PLS models were 17.24 and 21.31, respectively, indicating their relative estimation performance. The essential input parameters used in the models can be selected by sensitivity analysis. The RMSE for each model was calculated again after a sequential input selection process was used to remove insignificant input parameters. The RMSE of the LSSVM was then 13.21, which is better than the previous RMSE with all 16 parameters. The results show that LSSVM model using 13 input parameters can be utilized to calculate the required values for oxygen volume and coolant needed to optimally adjust the steel target temperature.

  • The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of a landfill project to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) from La Chureca Landfill in Managua, Nicaragua ("Project"). The feasibility study involved surveying the status and composition of waste on its way in to the landfill and projecting GHG emissions from the landfill. A projection of the GHG emissions with the IPCC model based on the survey results indicated the period 2006 to 2043 would see mean yearly GHG emissions of 290,147 ton-CO2/year with model certainty not considered, and 217,610 ton-CO2/year with model certainty considered. Thus, the result exceeded the corresponding median and mean values of other CDM projects implemented in Central America, even after model uncertainty was considered together with the conservative estimation of carbon capture efficiency. The similar result was produced even with an analysis of sensitivity to error factors. All the findings of the study are expected to be applicable as basic data for deciding about whether & how to proceed with the Project.
