In particle or short-fiber reinforced composites. cracking of the reinforcements is a significant damage mode because the broken reinforcements lose load carrying capacity. This paper deals with the load carrying capacity of intact and broken ellipsoidal inhomogeneities embedded in an infinite body and a damage theory of particle or short-fiber reinforce composites. The average stress in the inhomogeneity represents its load carrying capacity. and the difference between the average stresses of the intact t and broken inhomogeneities indicates the loss of load carrying capacity due to cracking damage. The composite in damage process contains intact and broken reinforcements in a matrix. An incremental constitutive relation of particle or short-fiber reinforced composites including the progressive cracking damage of the reinforcements have been developed based on the Eshelby's equivalent inclusion method and Mori and Tanaka's mean field concept. Influence of the cracking damage on the stress-strain response of the composites is demonstrated.

The compression or tension-controlled failure mode of concrete beams prestressed with unbonded FRP tendons is governed by the relative amount of prestressing tendon to the balanced one. Explicit assessment to determine the balanced reinforcement ratio of a beam with unbonded tendons (${\rho}^U_{pfb}$) is difficult because it requires a priori knowledge of the deformed beam geometry in order to evaluate the unbonded tendon strain. In this study, a theoretical evaluation of ${\rho}^U_{pfb}$ is presented based on a concept of three equivalent rectangular curvature blocks for simply supported concrete beams internally prestressed with unbonded carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) tendons. The equivalent curvature blocks were iteratively refined to closely simulate beam rotations at the supports, mid-span beam deflection, and member-dependent strain of the unbonded tendon at the ultimate state. The model was verified by comparing its predictions with the test results. Parametric studies were performed to examine the effects of various parameters on ${\rho}^U_{pfb}$.
This paper is about design for diaphragm of prestressed concrete box bridge using strut-tie model. In this paper, equivalent loads for the diaphragm are computed by considering loading conditions on continuous prestressed concrete box bridge and analyses for both longitudinal section and transverse section of the diaphragm an done by considering the equivalent loading and the prestressing. Based on principal stress trajectory obtained from the analyses, strut-tie model for each sections are constructed. By analyzing the constructed strut-tie model for each sections, the amounts and the locations of reinforcement for the diaphragm are obtained. The application of strut-tie model in this paper shows that the design by soul-tie model for the diaphragm of prestressed concrete box bridges can be rationally performed.

When wall-thinning occurs in nuclear Class 2 and 3 pipes, reinforcement is typically applied rather than replacement. To analyze the structural integrity of reinforced wall-thinned pipe, stress analysis results using full 3-D FE analysis are not compatible to the design code equation, ASME BPVC Sec. III NC/ND-3650. Therefore, the efficient stress evaluation method for the reinforced wall-thinned pipe, compatible to the design code equation, needs to be developed. In this paper, stress evaluation methods for the reinforced wall-thinned pipe are proposed using the equivalent straight pipe concept. Furthermore, for fatigue analysis of the reinforced wall-thinned pipe, the stress intensification factor of reinforced wall-thinned pipe is presented using the structural stress method given in ASME BPVC Sec. VIII Div.2.
A study of the structural strength evaluation on the doubler plate, considering various load cases that were subjected to in-plane and out of plane combined load, has been performed through the systematic evaluation process. In order to estimate the proper static strength of doubler plate for various load cases, elasto-plastic large deflection analysis is introduced, including the contact effect between main plate and doubler. The characteristics of stiffness and strength variation are discussed, based on the results. In order to compare the doubler structure with the original strength of main plate, without doubler, simple formulas for the evaluation of the equivalent flat plate thickness are derived for each load case, respectively, based on the additional series of analysis of flat plate structure. Using these derived equations, the thickness change of an equivalent flat plate is analyzed according to the variation of various design parameters of doubler platesome design guides are suggested in order to maintain the original strength of main plate without doubler reinforcement. Finally, correlation between derived equivalent flat plate formula and the developed buckling strength formulas are discovered, and these relations are formulated for the future development of simple strength evaluation formula of general doubler plate structure.

A study for the structural strength evaluation of doubler plates subjected to the in-plane combined load and lateral pressure load has been performed through a systematic evaluation process. In order to properly estimate the static strength of doubler plate, elasto-plastic large deflection analysis is introduced including the contact effect between main plate and doubler. The characteristics of stiffness and strength variation are discussed based on the analysis results. Also, in order to compare the doubler structure with the original strength of main plate without doubler, a simple formula for the evaluation of the equivalent flat plate thickness is derived based on the additional series analysis of fiat plate structure. Using this derived equation, the thickness change of a equivalent flat plate is analyzed according to the variation of various design parameters of doubler plate and some design guides are suggested In order to maintain the original strength of main plate without doubler reinforcement. Finally, correlation between derived equivalent plate thickness formula and the developed buckling strength formulas for intact plates by author et al. is discovered and these relations are formulated for the future development of simple strength evaluation formula of doubler plate structure.
This paper presents a theoretical model for the behavior of partially confined axi-symmetric reinforced concrete members subjected to axial load. The analysis uses the theories of elasticity and plasticity to cover the full range of the concrete behavior. Analysis of the elastic range of the problem involves boundary conditions that are defined along a relatively simple geometry. However, extending the analysis into the plastic range involves difficulties that arise from the irregular geometry of the boundary between the plastic zone and the elastic zone, a boundary which is also changing as the axial load increases. The solution is derived by replacing the discrete steel ties with an equivalent tube of thickness $t_{eq}$ and by analyzing the concrete cylinder, which is uniformly confined by the equivalent tube. The equivalency criterion initiates from a theoretical analysis of the problem in its elastic range where further finite element analysis shows that this criterion is valid also for the plastic range of the cylinder material. According to the proposed model, the efficiency of the lateral reinforcement can be evaluated by the equivalent thickness $t_{eq}$. Comparison with published test results of confined reinforced concrete stress-strain curves shows good agreement between the test and the analytical results.

Background: Steam explosions may occur in nuclear power plants by molten fuel-coolant interactions when the external reactor vessel cooling strategy fails. Since this phenomenon can threaten structural barriers as well as major components, extensive integrity assessment research is necessary to ensure their safety. Method: In this study, the influence of yield criteria was investigated to predict the failure of a reactor cavity under a typical postulated condition through detailed parametric finite element analyses. Further analyses using a geometrically simplified equivalent model with homogeneous concrete properties were also performed to examine its effectiveness as an alternative to the detailed reinforcement concrete model. Results: By comparing finite element analysis results such as cracking, crushing, stresses, and displacements, the Willam-Warnke model was derived for practical use, and failure criteria applicable to the reactor cavity under the severe accident condition were discussed. Conclusion: It was proved that the reactor cavity sustained its intended function as a barrier to avoid release of radioactive materials, irrespective of the different yield criteria that were adopted. In addition, from a conservative viewpoint, it seems possible to employ the simplified equivalent model to determine the damage extent and weakest points during the preliminary evaluation stage.

In modern buildings, glass is considered a structurally unsafe material due to its brittleness and unpredictable failure behavior. The possible use of structural glass elements (i.e., floors, beams and columns) is generally prevented by its poor tensile strength and a frequent occurrence of brittle failures. In this study an innovative modelling based on an equivalent thickness concept of laminated glass beam reinforced with FRP (Fiber Reinforced Polymer) composite material and of glass plates punched is presented. In particular, the novel numerical modelling applied to an embedding Carbon FRP-rod in the interlayer of a laminated structural glass beam is considered in order to increase both its failure strength, together with its post-failure strength and ductility. The proposed equivalent modelling of different specimens enables us to carefully evaluate the effects of this reinforcement. Both the responses of the reinforced beam and un-reinforced one are evaluated, and the corresponding results are compared and discussed. A novel equivalent modelling for reinforced glass beams using FRP composites is presented for FEM analyses in modern material components and proved estimations of the expected performance are provided. Moreover, the new suggested numerical analysis is also applied to laminated glass plates with wide holes at both ends for the technological reasons necessary to connect a glass beam to a structure. Obtained results are compared with an integer specimen. Experimental considerations are reported.
Since 1980's in U.S.A and Japan, the studies on increasing the bearing capacity of railway roadbed using geocell have been conducted for repair and reinforcement of railways constructed on soft soils. In this study, the railway roadbed system reinforced with geocells has been analyzed and investigated results of the previous studies were conducted in Korea and other nations, And the method for estimating the railway roadbed thickness was developed based on the equivalent method using the multi-layer theory and the deformation modulus Ev.
