A simple and straightforward method is introduced for developing continuum beam-rod model of a box-beam typed aircraft wing with composite layered skin based on "energy equivalence." The equivalent continuum structral properties are obtained from the direct comparison of the reduced stiffness and mass matrices for box-beam typed wing with those for continuum beam-rod model. The stiffness and mass matrices are all represented in terms of the continuum degrees-of freedom defined in this paper. The finite-element method. The advantage of the present continuum method is to give every continuum structural properties including all possible coupling terms which represent the couplings between different deformations. To evaluate the continuum method developed in this paper, free vibration analyses for both continuum beam-rod and box-beam are conducted. Numerical tests show that the present continuum method gives very reliable structural and dynamic properties compared to the results by the conventional finite-element analysis. analysis.

This paper presents the result of an international cooperative research on the post-correlation analysis of forced vibration tests and the prediction of earthquake responses of a large-scale seismic test structure. Through the post-correlation analysis, the properties of the soil layers are revised so that the best correlation in the responses may be obtained compared with the measured force vibration test data. Utilizing the revised soil properties as the initial linear values, the seismic responses are predicted for an earthquake using the equivalent linearlization technique based on the specified strain dependent characteristics of the shear moduli and damping ratios. It has been found that the predicted responses by the equivalent nonlinear procedure are in excellent agreement with the observed responses, which those using the initial properties are fairly off from the measured results.

The properties such as capacitance and resonant frequency are important in embedded capacitors. Accurate equivalent model is required to find these properties of embedded capacitor. In this paper, we investigate to analyze the properties of high-K embedded capacitor which was fabricated by Low Temperature Co-fired Ceramic (LTCC). Modeling based on partial element equivalent circuit (PEEC) method is performed using HSPICE circuit simulation. This modeling methodology can provide the good inspection of embedded capacitor to device engineer.
In this paper, the equivalent material properties of cellular metamaterials with different types of perforations have been presented using finite element (FE) simulation of tensile test in Abaqus commercial software. To this end, a Representative Volume Element (RVE) has been considered for each type of cellular metamaterial with regular array of circular, square, oval and rectangular perforations. Furthermore, both straight and perpendicular patterns of oval and rectangular perforations have been studied. By applying Periodic Boundary conditions (PBC) on the RVE, the actual behavior of cellular material under uniaxial tension has been simulated. Finally, the effective Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio and mass density of various metamaterials have been presented as functions of relative density of the RVE
This paper compares the two- and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) approaches for the numerical determination of the equivalent mechanical properties of fractured rock masses. Both orthogonally-fractured model and discrete fracture networks (DFN) were used for the geometry and 2D models were cut in various directions from 3D model to compare their mechanical properties. Geological data were loosely based on the data available from Sellafield, UK. Analytical method based on compliance tensor transformation was used for investigation in orthogonally fractured rock and numerical experiments were conducted on fractured rock mass with DFN geometry. It is shown that 2D approach always overestimates the elastic modulus of fractured rock masses by a factor of up to around two because fractures are assumed to be perpendicular to the model plane in 2D problems. Poisson ratios tend to have larger values in 2D analysis while there is opposite trend in some sections. The study quantitatively demonstrates the limitation of the 2D approach that uses the simplified model from true 3D geometry.
There is increasing need for high-strength steel especially for the high-rise steel building structure. High- strength steels, however, may have mechanical properties that are significantly different from those of the conventional steels. The application of high-strength steels to building structures should be reviewed as to whether inelastic behavior equivalent to that of conventional steels can be attained or not. In this study, SM570TMC steel, which was developed recently in Korea, was tested to evaluate mechanical properties and welding characteristics for use as a structural steel. Yield phenomenon of SM570TMC steel, which is continuous yielding, is quite different from that of conventional steel. The distributions of yield strength of SM570TMC steel were uniform regardless of thickness, while the minimum yield strength was 440MPa. Also, the flat distributions of hardness in z-direction were found to comprise one of the important properties. Results of the charpy impact tests at -5oC revealed toughness values of SM570TMC steel, which were higher than those of equivalent as rolled steel. Carbon equivalent(Ceq) values of SM570TMC steel, which were related to welding performance, were lower than those of equivalent as rolled steel.
To investigate the effect of spatial variability on hydraulic properties of unsaturated soils, a numerical model is set up which can simulate seepage process in an unsaturated heterogeneous soil. The unsaturated heterogeneous soil is composed of matrix sand embedded with a small proportion of clay for simulating the heterogeneity. Soil-water characteristic curve and unsaturated hydraulic conductivity curve of the unsaturated soil are expressed by Van Genuchten model. Hydraulic parameters of the matrix sand are considered as random fields. Different autocorrelation lengths (ACLs) of hydraulic parameter of the matrix sand and different proportions of clay are assumed to investigate the influence of spatial variability on the equivalent hydraulic properties of the heterogeneous soil. Four model sizes are used in the numerical experiments to investigate the influence of scale effects and to determine the sizes of representative volume element (RVE) in the numerical simulations. Through a number of Monte Carlo simulations of unsaturated seepage analysis, the means and the coefficients of variations (COVs) of the equivalent hydraulic parameters of the heterogeneous soil are calculated. Simulations show that the ACL and model size has little influence on the means of the equivalent hydraulic parameters, but they have a large influence on the COVs of the equivalent hydraulic parameters. The size of an RVE is mainly affected by the ACL and the proportion of heterogeneity. The influence of spatial variability on the hydraulic parameters of the heterogeneous unsaturated soil can be used as a guidance for geotechnical reliability analysis and design related to unsaturated soils.
Modeling of thick composite structures for finite element analysis is relatively complicated. 2-D plane elements may cause inaccurate result since the plane stress condition cannot be applicable in these structures. Therefore a 3-D modeling should be used. However, the difficulty to model all the layers with different material properties and ply orientation arise in this case. In this paper, an equivalent modeling is proposed and numerically tested for analysis of thick composite structures. By grouping layers with same material and ply orientation, number of elements through the thickness is remarkably reduced and still the result is close enough to the one from a detail finite element model. MSC/NASTRAN and PATRAN are used for the analysis. The proposed modeling technique has been applied for analysis of composite rotor hub system designed by Korea Aerospace Research Institute(KARI). Using the proposed equivalent modeling technique, we could conduct stress analysis for the hub system and check the safety factor of each part.

In the present paper, we observe a relation between fuzzy norms and induced crisp norms on a linear space. We first prove that if $\rho_1,\;\rho_2$ are equivalent fuzzy norms on a linear space, then for every $\varepsilon\in(0.1)$, the induced crisp norms $P_\varepsilon^1,\;and\;P_\varepsilon^2$, respectively are equivalent. Since the converse does not hold, we prove it under some strict conditions. And consider the following theorem proved in [8]: Let $\rho$ be a lower semicontinuous fuzzy norm on a normed linear space X, and have the bounded support. Then $\rho$ is equivalent to the fuzzy norm $\chi_B$ where B is the closed unit ball of X. The lower semi-continuity of $\rho$ is an essential condition which guarantees the continuity of $P_\varepsilon$, where 0 < e < 1. As the last result, we prove that : if $\rho$ is a fuzzy norm on a finite dimensional vector space, then $\rho$ is equivalent to $\chi_B$ if and only if the support of $\rho$ is bounded.
