Flat plate slab systems have been commonly used as a gravity force resisting systems, which should be constructed with lateral force resisting systems such as shear walls and moment resisting frame. ACI 318(2005) allows the Direct design method, the equivalent frame method (ACI-EFM) under gravity loads and the finite-element models, effective beam width models and equivalent frame models under lateral loads. ACI-EFM can be used for gravity loads as well as lateral loads analysis. But the method may not predict the behavior of flat plate slabs under lateral loads. Thus Previous study developed a Modified equivalent frame method(Modified-EFM) which could give more precise answer for flat plate slab under lateral loads. This study is to verified the accuracy of a Modified-EFM under combined lateral and gravity loads. The accuracy of this model is verified by comparing the results using the Modified-EFM with the results of finite element analysis. For this purpose, 7 story building is considered. The analysis results of other existing models are included. The analysis results show that Modified-EFM produces comparable drift and slab internal moments with those obtained from finite element analysis.

Perforated plates are used for the steam generator tube-sheet and the Reactor Vessel Closure Head in the Nuclear Power Plant. The ASME code, Section III Appendix A-8000, addresses the analysis of perforated plates, however, this analysis is only limited to the flat plate with a triangular perforation pattern. Based on the concept of the effective elastic constants, simulation of flat and spherical perforated plates and their equivalent solid plates were carried out using Finite Element Analysis (FEA). The isotropic material properties of the perforated plate were replaced with anisotropic material properties of the equivalent solid plate and subjected to the same loading conditions. The generated curves of effective elastic constants vs ligament efficiency for the flat perforated plate were in agreement with the design curve provided by ASME code. With this result, a plate with spherical curvature having perforations can be conveniently analyzed with equivalent elastic modulus and equivalent Poisson's ratio.
Due to the complexity of mathematical expressions, the literature concerning the free vibration analysis of plates carrying multiple three-degree-of-freedom (dof) spring-mass systems is rare. In this paper, the three degrees of freedom (dof's) for a spring-mass system refer to the translational motion of its lumped mass in the vertical ($\bar{z}$) direction and the two pitching motions of its lumped mass about the two horizontal ($\bar{x}$ and $\bar{y}$) axes. The basic concept of this paper is to replace each three-dof spring-mass system by a set of equivalent springs, so that the free vibration characteristics of a rectangular plate carrying any number of three-dof spring-mass systems can be obtained from those of the same plate supported by the same number of sets of equivalent springs. Since the three dof's of the lumped mass for each three-dof spring-mass system are eliminated to yield a set of equivalent springs, the total dof of the entire vibrating system is not affected by the total number of the spring-mass systems attached to the rectangular plate. However, this is not true in the conventional finite element method (FEM), where the total dof of the entire vibrating system increases three if one more three-dof spring-mass system is attached to the rectangular plate. Hence, the computer storage memory required by using the presented equivalent spring method (ESM) is less than that required by the conventional FEM, and the more the total number of the three-dof spring-mass systems attached to the plate, the more the advantage of the ESM. In addition, since manufacturing a spring with the specified stiffness is much easier than making a three-dof spring-mass system with the specified spring constants and mass magnitude, the presented theory of replacing a three-dof spring-mass system by a set of equivalent springs will be also significant from this viewpoint.

A four-node plate finite element for the analysis of laminated composites which is developed using strain gradient notation is presented. The element is based on a first-order shear deformation theory and on the equivalent lamina assumption. Strains and stresses can be calculated at different points through the thickness of the plate. They are averaged values due to the equivalent lamina assumption. A shear correction factor is used as the transverse shear strain is taken to be constant over the plate thickness while its actual variation is parabolic. Strain gradient notation, which is physically interpretable, allows for the detailed a-priori analysis of the finite element model. The polynomial expansions are inspected and spurious terms responsible for modeling errors are identified in the shear strains polynomial expansions. The element is corrected by simply removing the spurious terms from the shear strains expansions. The element is implemented into a FORTRAN finite element code in two versions; namely, with and without spurious terms. Results are compared to show the effects of the spurious terms on the solutions. It is also shown that a refined mesh composed of corrected elements provides solutions which approximate very well the analytical solutions, validating the procedure.

Many studies for the perforated plates have been done, especially on the subject of static behavior and stress distribution in the plate. Equivalent elastic properties are one of the successive concepts for this problem. However little effort was taken to get their dynamic characteristics. In this paper finite element modal analysis was performed for the perforated plates having square and triangular hole patterns. An attempt to use existing equivalent elastic properties into the modal analysis of the plate was carried out. To verify feasibility of the finite element models, modal test was also performed on one typical perforated plate. System parameters such as natural frequencies and mode shapes were extracted and compared with the analysis results.
In this study, the natural frequencies of the perforated square plate with a square penetration pattern are obtained as a function of ligament efficiency using the commercial finite-element analysis code ANSYS. In addition, they are used to extract the effective modulus of elasticity under an assumption of a constant Poisson's ratio. The effective modulus of elasticity of the fully perforated square plate is applied to the modal analysis of a partially perforated square plate using a homogeneous finite-element analysis model. The natural frequencies and the corresponding mode shapes of the homogeneous model are compared with the results of the detailed finite-element analysis model of the partially perforated square plate to check the validity of the effective modulus of elasticity. In addition, the theoretical method to calculate the natural frequencies of a partially perforated square plate with fixed edges is suggested according to the Rayleigh-Ritz method.

For cylindrical shells, the closed-form solutions are limited only to the cases with special boundary and/or loading conditions. Though the finite element method is certainly a powerful solution approach for the general structural dynamics problems, it is known to provide reliable solutions only in the low frequency region due to the inherent high sensitivities of structural and numerical modeling errors. Instead, the spectral element method has been proved to provide extremely accurate dynamic responses even in the high frequency region. Since the wave characteristics of a cylindrical shell becomes identical to that of a flat plate as the frequency increases, an equivalent plate model (EPM) representing the high-frequency dynamic characteristics of a cylindrical shell is introduced herein. The EPM-based spectral element analysis solutions are compared with the known analytical solutions for the corresponding cylindrical shell to confirm the validity of the present modeling approach.

Among many structural dynamics modification methods for plate and shell vibration problems, embedding an emboss to the surface is very efficient. But deciding an optimal position and shape using optimization algorithm needs defining geometry and remeshing the model for every iteration step to implement the method, which takes much numerical cost. (omitted)
The Finite Element Method(FEM), which is existing stress analysis method, requires substantial amounts of efforts for analysis of perforated plates. An equivalent solid plate analysis method is developed in this paper. A perforated plate is assumed to be an equivalent solid plate in this method. Stress analysis is performed for this equivalent solid plate using effective material properties, and then these stresses are converted to the actual stresses of the original perforated plate. A case study is conducted for a rectangularly arrayed perforated plate using the proposed method in this paper. Compared and analyzed with respect to those calculated by the existing stress analysis method, the result seems to be satisfied in terms of its practicality and more conservative with respect to margin in design application.
A simplified finite element analysis has been used to predict the weld-induced deformation to bead-on-plate welding of steel plates having curvatures in the welding direction. In this study, the equivalent loading method based on inherent strain was used to investigate the effect of longitudinal curvature on the weld-induced deformation of curved plates. Equivalent loads were derived from the inherent strain distribution around the weld line, and the loads were used for linear finite element analyses. These kinds of numerical simulations can, of course, be performed by using the rigorous thermalelastic-plastic analysis method. This approach is not, however, practical for use in weld-induced deformation analysis of large and complex structures, such as ship structures, in view of computing time and cost. The present equivalent load approach has been applied to several plate models having curvatures in the welding direction, and the results are compared with those obtained by thermal-elastic-plastic analysis and also with those obtained by the other simplified method found in reference. As far as the present results are concerned, the weld-induced deformation of curved plates can be accurately predicted by the method presented in this paper.
