The principal obstacle to selection of a laser processing method in production is its relatively high equipment cost and the natural unwillingness of production supervision to try something new until it is thoroughly proven. The major objective of this work is focused on the combined features of gas tungsten arc and a low-power cold laser beam. In this work, the laser beam from a 7 watts carbon monoxide laser was combined with electrical discharges from a short-pulsed capacitive discharge GTA welding power supply. When the low power CO laser beam passes through a special composition shielding gas, the CO molecules in the gas absorbs the radiation, and ionizes through a process blown as non-equilibrium, vibration-vibration pumping. The resulting laser-induced plasma(LIP) was positioned between various configurations of electrodes. The high-voltage impulse applied to the electrodes forced rapid electrical breakdown between the electrodes. Electrical discharges between tungsten electrodes and aluminum sheet specimens followed the ionized path provided by LIP. The result was well-focused melted spots.

A numerical method for evaluating the equilibrium path of cylindrical shell subject to axial load and eccentrically axial load is presented. The effects of both material and geometric nonlinearities were also considered in the analysis. The nonlinear formulation was based on the total Lagrangian description and nonlinear equtions were solved by the Newton-Raphson method with load increment procedures. Degenerate shell elements with layered approach were employed for the analysis. The elasto-plastic deformation can be found in several examples and a large eccentricity of the axial load reduces the stress level at the time of the local buckling of the pipe considerably.

The present study is concerned with the application of Constant arc-length method that proposed by Crisfield in the investigation of the geometrically nonlinear behaviour of spatial structures composed by truss or beam element. The arc-length method can trace the full nonlinear equilibrium path of Spatial structure far beyond the critical point such as limit or bifurcation point. So, we have developed the constant arc-length method of Crisfield to analysis spatial structure. The finite element formulation is used to develop the 3d truss/beam element including the geometrical nonlinear effect. In an effort to evaluate the merits of the methods, extensive numerical studies were carried out on a number of selected structural systems. The advantages of Constant arc length method in tracing the post-buckling behavior of spatial structures, are demonstrated.
This paper aims at exploring a conceptual framework of analyzing the evolutionary processes of regional economies by reconciling the notion of regional resilience and the concepts prevailing in the disciplines of evolutionary economics and geography. The resilience framework appears to offer a promising outlet with which combination of the seemingly contradictory conceptions is made possible. It can address why some regions manage to adapt to external shocks, renew themselves, or lock out themselves, while others are more locked in decline. In addition, it can also explain how the spatial organization of economic production, distribution, and consumption is transformed over time. Then, regional economic resilience, together with its accompanying vehicle of panarchy, emerges as a workable framework of explaining regional differentiation in regional economic performance and trajectories. Despite the risk of being a fuzzy concept, the resilience conception can be properly operationalized to provide policy principles of regional economic innovation adjusted to region-specific contexts.
Understanding the thermal conductivity and heat transfer processes in superlattice structures is critical for the development of thermoelectric materials and optoelectronic devices based on quantum structures. $Chen^{(1)}$ developed ballistic diffusive equation(BDE) for alternatives of the Boltzmann equation that can be applied to the complex geometrical situation. In this study, a simulation code based on BDE is developed and applied to the 1-dimensional transient heat conduction across a thin film and transient 2-dimensional heat conduction across the film with heater. The obtained results are compared to the results of the $Chen^{(1)}$ and Yang and $Chen^{(1)}$. Finally, steady 2-dimensional heat conduction in the quantum dot superlattice are solved to obtain the equivalent thermal conductivity of the lattice and also compared with the experimental data from $Borca-Tasciuc^{(2)}$.
Nonlinear thermoelastic static response characteristics of laminated composite conical panels are studied employing finite element approach based on first-order shear deformation theory and field consistency principle. The nonlinear governing equations, considering moderately large deformation, are solved using Newton-Raphson iterative technique coupled with the adaptive displacement control method to efficiently trace the equilibrium path. The validation of the formulation for mechanical and thermal loading cases is carried out. The present results are found to be in good agreement with those available in the literature. The adaptive displacement control method is found to be capable of handling problems with multiple snapping responses. Detailed parametric study is carried out to highlight the influence of semicone angle, boundary conditions, radius-to-thickness ratio and lamination scheme on the nonlinear thremoelastic response of laminated cylindrical and conical panels.
Network expansion has been an inevitable method for most traffic equilibrium assignments to consider intersection movements such as intersection delays. The drawback of network expansion is that because it dramatically increases network sizes to emulate possible directional movements as corresponding links, not only is complexities for building network amplified, but computational performance is shrunk. This paper Proposes a new variational inequality formulation for a user-optimal traffic equilibrium assignment model to explicitly consider directional delays without building expanded network structures. In the formulation, directional delay functions are directly embedded into the objective function, thus any modification of networks is not required. By applying a vine-based shortest Path algorithm into the diagonalization algorithm to solve the problem, it is additionally demonstrated that various loop-related movements such as U-Turn, P-Turn, etc., which are frequently witnessed near urban intersections, can also be imitated by blocking some turning movements of intersections. The proposed formulation expects to augment computational performance through reduction of network-building complexities.
The study on traffic assignment is actively being performed which reflect networks status using time. Its background is increasing social needs to use traffic assignment models in not only hardware area of road network plan but also software area of traffic management or control. In addition, multi-class traffic assignment model is receiving study in order to fill a gap between theory and practice of traffic assignment model. This model is made up of two, one of which is multi-driver class and the other multi-vehicle class. The latter is the more realistic because it can be combined with dynamic model. On this background, this study is to build multidynamic model combining the above-mentioned two areas. This has been a theoretic pillar of ITS in which dynamic user equilibrium assignment model is now made an issue, therefore more realistic dynamic model is expected to be built by combining it with multi-class model. In case of multi-vehicle, FIFO would be violated which is necessary to build the dynamic assignment model. This means that it is impossible to build multi-vehicle dynamic model with the existing dynamic assignment modelling method built under the conditions of FIFO. This study builds dynamic network model which could relieve the FIFO conditions. At the same time, simulation method, one of the existing network loading method, is modified to be applied to this study. Also, as a solution(algorithm) area, time dependent shortest path algorithm which has been modified from existing shortest path algorithm and the existing MSA modified algorithm are built. The convergence of the algorithm is examined which is built by calculating dynamic user equilibrium solution adopting the model and algorithm and grid network.
The purpose of this study is to review the changes in the aviation safety management system, how that system has evolved and what forces caused these changes to take place. Also included is an examination of the development process of the aviation safety management system in view of the new institutionalism, identifying the patterns of change. Based on the results of this study, I propose policy methods to design a desirable civil aviation safety system with a view toward raising the safety standards in the Korean civil aviation community. The major analysis variables are as follows: first, aviation accidents caused by external factors and international standards as independent variables second, environmental changes and political processes affecting aviation safety management system as major mediating variables and third, the aviation safety management legal system, the aviation safety management organizations and an expert participation system as dependent variables. The institutional changes and continuance of the aviation safety management system show that when specific circumstances arise, the continuance lasts depending on the path dependency, and in a certain circumstance, when immanent changing factors reach a critical point, the system suddenly changes by a punctuated equilibrium, which are all included in this study.
A close form solution of the maximum deflection for cracked columns with rectangular cross-sections was developed and thus the elastic buckling behavior and ultimate bearing capacity were studied analytically. First, taking into account the effect of the crack in the potential energy of elastic systems, a trigonometric series solution for the elastic deflection equation of an arbitrary crack position was derived by use of the Rayleigh-Ritz energy method and an analytical expression of the maximum deflection was obtained. By comparison with the rotational spring model (Okamura et al. 1969) and the equivalent stiffness method (Sinha et al. 2002), the advantages of the present solution are that there are few assumed conditions and the effect of axial compression on crack closure was considered. Second, based on the above solutions, the equilibrium paths of the elastic buckling were analytically described for cracked columns subjected to both axial and eccentric compressive load. Finally, as examples, the influence of crack depth, load eccentricity and column slenderness on the elastic buckling behavior was investigated in the case of a rectangular column with a single-edge crack. The relationship of the load capacity of the column with respect to crack depth and eccentricity or slenderness was also illustrated. The analytical and numerical results from the examples show that there are three kinds of collapse mechanisms for the various states of cracking, eccentricity and slenderness. These are the bifurcation for axial compression, the limit point instability for the condition of the deeper crack and lighter eccentricity and the fracture for higher eccentricity. As a result, the conception of critical transition eccentricity $(e/h)_c$, from limit-point buckling to fracture failure, was proposed and the critical values of $(e/h)_c$ were numerically determined for various eccentricities, crack depths and slenderness.
