The paper presents a reliability-based method that can capture the impact of uncertainty of seismic loadings. The proposed method incorporates probabilistic concepts into the classical limit equilibrium and the Newmark-type deformation techniques. The risk of damage is then computed by Monte Carlo simulation. Random process and RMS hazard method are introduced to produce seismic motions and also to use them in the seismic slope analyses. The geotechnical variability and sampling errors are also considered. The results of reliability analyses indicate that in a highly seismically active region, characterization of earthquake hazard is the more critical factor, and characterization of soil properties has a relatively small effect on the computed risk of slope failure and excessive slope deformations. The results can be applicable to both circular and non-circular slip surface failure modes.

Observations suggest the star formation in nuclear rings of barred galaxies proceeds episodically in time and sometimes asymmetrically in space. Existing theories and numerical simulations suggest that the episodic star formation is perhaps due to either supernova feedback combined with fluid instabilities or time-varying mass inflow rate. However, it has been challenging to discern what dominates in shaping the star formation history because the effects of the inflow and feedback are blended in global simulations of nuclear rings. To understand their effects separately, we construct semi-global models of nuclear rings, which treat the mass inflow rate as a model parameter. By running simulations with the inflow rates kept constant or oscillating in time, we find that the star formation rate (SFR) of the rings varies coherently with the inflow rate, while the feedback is responsible only for stochastic fluctuations of the SFR within a factor of two. The feedback instead plays an important role in maintaining the vertical dynamical equilibrium and setting the depletion time. While the asymmetry in the inflow does not necessarily lead to the asymmetry in the star formation, we find that the rings undergo a transient period of lopsided star formation when the inflow rate of only one dust lane is suddenly increased.
A measurement has been made for the radioactivities (or concentrations) of radon daughters, i.e., RaA, RaB and RaC in airborne dust by means of single filtering method. This is to evaluate the radioactivities in terms of Ci or WL (working level) from gross alpha counts measured in the selected-time intervals after an air sample is taken from a membrane filter paper with a mean pore size of $0.8{\mu}m$. This work involves determinations of standard deviation in radioactivities, radioactive equilibrium factor and ratio. It appears that a concentration of total radon daughters is $0.30{\sim}2.36pCi/l\;or\;0.89{\times}10^{-3}{\sim}6.57{\times}10^{-3}WL$, depending on the sampling time. Generally the highest concentration was observed around nine o'clock in a day while the lowest value was obtained around seventeen o'clock. Standard deviations based on counting statistics of RaA's, RaB's and RaC's concentrations are ${\pm}57.75%,\;{\pm}22.32%\;and\;{\pm}31.29%$, respectively. It is revealed that the radioactive equilibrium factor is 0.322 while the radioactive equilibrium ratio is of pattern $C_1>C_2>C_3$ in general. Here $C_1,\;C_2\;and\;C_3$ stand for concentrations of RaA,RaB and RaC, respectively.

Groundwater samples from the southern area composed of andesitic rocks and the northwestern area composed of granite in Pusan city, have been collected and analyzed. According to the Piper diagram. groundwater in the southern area belongs to Ca$\^$2+/-HCO$_3$$\^$-/ and Ca$\^$2+/-(Cl$\^$-/+SO$_4$$\^$2-/) types, and that in the northwestern area mostly belongs to Ca$\^$2+/-HCO$_3$$\^$-/ type and partly Na$\^$+/-HCO$_3$$\^$-/ type. Two factors (factor 1 and factor 2) were obtained from the result of the factor analysis in the southern area. Factor 1, consisting of Mg$\^$2+/, Ca$\^$2+/, Cl$\^$-/, SO$_4$$\^$2-/, NH$_4$$\^$+/, EC and NO$_3$$\^$-/ is represented by the dissolution of Ca-plagioclase and calcite, and the influence of anthropogenic sources. Factor 2, consisting of K$\^$+/, Na$\^$+/. SiO$_2$, SO$_4$$\^$2-/, and HCO$_3$$\^$-/ is mainly represented by the dissolution of feldspar. Three factors were obtained from the result of the factor analysis in the northwestern area Factor 1, consisting of Na$\^$+/, K$\^$+/, NH$_4$$\^$+/, Cl$\^$-/, SO$_4$$\^$2-/ and NO$_3$$\^$-/ explains dissolution of plagioclase and mica, the influence of anthropogenic sources and salt water. Factor 2, consisting of Ca$\^$2+/ and HCO$_3$$\^$-/ explains the dissolution of Ca-plagioclase. Factor 3, consisting of Mg$\^$2+/ and SiO$_2$, explains the dissolution of silicate minces. and contaminants. Based on the phase stability diagrams, groundwater both in the southern and in the northwestern area is mostly in equilibrium with kaolinite. Cl$\^$-/ with respect to Na$\^$+/, Ca$\^$2+/, Mg$\^$2+/, K$\^$+/, SO$_4$$\^$2-/ and HCO$_3$$\^$-/ indicates that both the northwestern area and the southern area are influenced by the salt water.
To estimate the sediment discharge controlled by sediment-filled check-dam and thereby enhancing factor for check-dam design and dredging criteria, we surveyed slope failures and stream-bed fluctuation caused by geomorphic disturbances (i.e., landslides and debris flows) in Inje, Gangwondo. In general, check-dams play roles for restraining and controlling sediment discharge within a section under the design equilibrium gradient and a section under the design flood gradient, respectively. The results in this study showed same pattern: that is, the closed type check-dam, which has a design restraint sediment discharge of $2,111m^3$, estimated to control a sediment discharge of $3,996m^3$ in the stream section within 250 m right upper area immediately after the disturbances occurred in 2006. As a result, a design control sediment discharge of the check-dam was larger than its design restraint sediment discharge. This represents that the check-dam is still having an own function for controlling sediment discharge although it exceeded the designed capacity by the sediment discharged from upstream during the disturbances. Our finding suggests that the sediment discharge controlling of check-dam may need to be evaluated separately from its sediment discharge restraint. Currently, the country, however, does not consider the design control (or restraint) sediment discharges, based on the actual field survey, as criteria for check-dam design and/or dredging work. Therefore, the accumulation of the quantitative data is required to support that check-dam has functions for both restraining and controlling sediment discharge. This would be a way to develop our erosion control technology to the scientific technology equipped with a more objective and systematic aspects.
Zeolite X adsorbents with large surface area were prepared for using oxygen PSA adsorbent. Selective adsorption performance of nitrogen on the synthesized zeolite X adsorbent was improved by the cation exchange of adsorbent. The zeolite X which had over $650m^2/g$ surface area was synthesized at the conditions of $SiO_2\;:\;Na_2O\;:\;H_2O\;:\;Al_2O_3$ = 2.5 : 3.5 : 150 : 1 mole ratio, $98^{\circ}C$ temperature and 18 h synthesized time in 50 L reactor. The metal ions Li, Ag, Ca, Br, Sr, etc. were investigated for ion exchange with zeolite X. Ag ion was showed the highest ion exchange rate among these metal ions and all metal ions were exchanged with Na ion at equivalent rate. Compared with the NaX adsorbent, the ion exchanged zeolite X adsorbent remarkably improved its adsorption performance of nitrogen at the conditions of $10{\sim}40^{\circ}C$ temperature and 0~9 atm pressure. At an equilibrium pressure under 0.5 atm, adsorption performance of nitrogen on the ion exchanged zeolite adsorbent increased in the order of Ag > Li > Ca > Sr> Ba > K, whereas at an equilibrium pressure over 1 atm showed in the order of Li > Ag > Ca > Sr > Ba > K. Nitrogen/oxygen separation factor of Li ion exchanged zeolite X adsorbent was 13.023 at the partial pressure of nitrogen/oxygen gas mixture similar to air and $20^{\circ}C$ adsorption temperature.

Current methods of measuring the sediment concentration of natural streams can be affected by weather conditions and have lower reliability in bed-load sections due to mechanical limits. Theoretical methods have to be used to solve this problem, but they have low reliability compared to the measured values and diverse results for the bed-load sediment concentration. This study proposes a new way to reliably determine the bed-load sediment concentration from the relation with theoretical depth-integrated concentration based on the informational entropy concept. Sediment distribution shows a uniform probability distribution under maximized entropy conditions under some constraints, so a function can be calculated for the sediment distribution and depth-integrated concentration. The parameters of a stream were estimated by a nonlinear regression method using the concentration data from a past experiment. Equilibrium N (EN) was estimated using the relation between two different formulas proposed in this study, which can ease the estimation of both the total sediment distribution and depth-integrated sediment concentration with high reliable results with an average R2 of 0.924.
The inside wall of a coal gasifier is lined with refractory, and the corrosion of the refractory is an important factor affecting the refractory lifetime and the replacement period. This paper examines the changes in microstructure of a chromia refractory due to chemical reactions with slag having varying amounts of $Fe_2O_3$. Slag samples were prepared by adding $Fe_2O_3$ to KIDECO slag, and static corrosion experiments were carried out at $1550^{\circ}C$. The layer of $(Fe,Cr)_3O_4$ formation and the depth of Fe depletion in the infiltrating slag were determined. In addition, FactSage equilibrium calculations were carried out in order to determine the conditions of formation, and to compare with the experimental observations. In the sample exposed to KIDECO slag, which has about 10 wt% $Fe_2O_3$, the formation of $(Fe,Cr)_3O_4$ was not observed. As the $Fe_2O_3$ concentration in slag increased, $(Fe,Cr)_3O_4$ formation and Fe depletion depth increased. Increasing $Fe_2O_3$ concentration also made the slag/refractory interface indistinguishable. Equilibrium calculations predicted that higher $Fe_2O_3$ concentrations favor chromite formation at gasification temperatures. The chromite formation was most favorable when the amount of $Cr_2O_3$ was limited, as in the case of dissolved $Cr_2O_3$ in slag. When the concentration of $Fe_2O_3$ in slag was less than 20%, the formation of chromite was least favorable in the system with equal amounts of slag and refractory.
The benefits of utilizing internal reinforced members, such as soil nails and ground anchors, in maintaining stable excavations and slopes have been known among geotechnical engineers to be very effective. Occasionally, however, both soil nails and ground anchors are simultaneously used in one excavation site. In the present study, a method of limit equilibrium stability analysis of the excavation zone reinforced with the vertically or horizontally mixed nail-anchor system is proposed to evaluate the global safety factor with respect to a sliding failure. The postulated failure wedges are determined based on the results of the $FLAC^{2D}\; 및\; FLAC^{3D}$ program analyses. This study also deals with a determination of the required thickness of the shotcrete facing. An excessive facing thickness may be required due to both the stress concentration and the relative displacement at the interface zone between the soil nailing system and the ground anchor system. A simple finite element method of analysis is presented to estimate the corresponding relative displacement at the interface zone between two different support systems. As an efficient resolution to reduce the facing thickness, the modified bearing plate system is also proposed. Finally with various analysis related to the effects of design parameters, the predicted displacements are compared with the results of the $FLAC^{2D}$ program analyses.
Adsorption equilibrium, kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of a brilliant green from aqueous solutions at various initial dye concentration (10~30 mg/L), contact time (1~24 h) and temperature (298~318 K) on zeolite were studied in a batch mode operation. The equilibrium adsorption values were analyzed by Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin-Radushkevich model. The results indicate that Langmuir and Freundlich model provides the best correlation of the experimental data. Base on the estimated values of Langmuir dimensionless separation factor ($R_L=0.041{\sim}0.057$) and Freundlich constant (1/n=0.30~0.47), this process could be employed as effective treatment method. calculated values of adsorption energy by Dubinin-Radushkevich model were 1.564~1.857 kJ/mol corresponding to physical adsorption. The adsorption kinetics of brilliant green were best described by the pseudo second-order rate model and followed by intraparticle diffusion model. Thermodynamic parameters such as activation energy, free energy, enthalpy and entropy were calculated to estimate nature of adsorption. negative Gibbs free energy (-10.3~-11.4 kJ/mol), positive enthalpy change (49.48 kJ/mol) and Arrehenius activation energy (27.05 kJ/mol) indicates that the adsorption is spontaneous, endothermic and physical adsorption process, respectively.
