  • In mechanical testing of W-Ni-Pe heavy alloys, the cracks nucleate at W/W interface and propagate through W/ Imatrix interface or through matrix phase together with the cleavage of W grains. The mechanical properties can therefore be improved by control of the interfacial strength and area. In this presentation, some experimental result and techniques on this subject will be reviewed and discussed. The hydrogen embrittlement caused by the hydrogen segregation at interfaces during sintering in an hydrogen atmosphere can be removed by an heat-treattnent in vacuum or in an inert atmosphere. The heat-treatment condition can be estimated by using a diffusion equation for a cylindrical shape. The mechanical properties, in particular the impact property, are degraded by the segregation of non-metallic impurities, such as Sand P. The degradation can be prevented by adding a fourth element, such as La or Ca, active with the non-metallic impurities. The cyclic heat-treatment at usual heat-treattnent tempemture causes the penetration of matrix between W/W grain boundaries and results in remarkable increase in impact energy. This is due to an increase in the area of ductile failure during the impact test. The instability of W/matrix interface casued by addition of Mo or Re can be controlled by using W powders of different size. The increase in the interfacial area in found to be related to the presence of non-equilibrium pure W gmins among W(Mo or Re) solid solution gmins.

  • Installing vibration control devices in the structure rises as a solution instead of increasing structural strength considering construction cost. Especially, viscoelastic dampers show excellent vibration control performance at low cost and are easy to install in existing structures compared with other control devices. Therefore, cost-effectiveness of structure with viscoelastic dampers needs to be evaluated. Previous cost-effectiveness evaluation method for the seismically isolated structure(Koh et al., 1999;2000)is applied on the building structure with viscoelastic dampers, which combines optimal design and cost-effectiveness evaluation for seismically isolated structures based on minimum life-cycle cost concept. Input ground motion is modeled in the form of spectral density function to take into account acceleration and site coefficients. Damping of the viscoelastic damper is considered by modal strain energy method. Stiffness of shear building and shear area of viscoelastic damper are adopted as design variables for optimization. For the estimation of failure probability, transfer function of the structure with viscoelastic damper for spectral analysis is derived from the equation of motion. Results reveal that cost-effectiveness of the structure with viscoelastic dampers is relatively high in how seismic region and stiff soil condition.

  • The thermo-acoustic instability in the combustion process of a gas turbine is caused by the interaction of the heat release mechanism and the pressure perturbation. These acoustic vibrations cause fatigue failure of the combustor and decrease the combustion efficiency. This study is to develop a segmented dynamic thermo-acoustic model to understand combustion instability of gas turbine. Therefore, this study required a dynamic analysis rather than static analysis, and developed a segmented model that can analyze the performance of the system over time using the Matlab/Simulink. The developed model can confirm the thermo-acoustic combustion instability and exhaust gas concentration in the combustion chamber according to the equivalent ratio change, and confirm the thermo-acoustic combustion instability for the inlet temperature and the load changes. As a result, segmented dynamic thermo-acoustic model has been developed to analyze combustion instability under the operating condition.

  • When performing fire PSA in a nuclear power plant, an event mapping method, using an internal event PSA model, is widely used to reduce the resources used by fire PSA model development. Feasible initiating events and component failure events due to fire are identified to transform the fault tree (FT) for an internal event PSA into one for a fire PSA using the event mapping method. A surrogate event or damage term method is used to condition the FT of the internal PSA. The surrogate event or the damage term plays the role of flagging whether the system/component in a fire compartment is damaged or not, depending on the fire being initiated from a specified compartment. These methods usually require explicit states of all compartments to be modeled in a fire area. Fire event scenarios, when using explicit identification, such as surrogate or damage terms, have two problems: (1) there is no consideration of multiple fire propagation beyond a single propagation to an adjacent compartment, and (2) there is no consideration of simultaneous fire propagations in which an initiating fire event is propagated to multiple paths simultaneously. The present paper suggests a fire propagation equation to identify all possible fire event scenarios for an explicitly treated fire event scenario in the fire PSA. Also, a method for separating fire events was developed to make all fire events a set of mutually exclusive events, which can facilitate arithmetic summation in fire risk quantification. A simple example is given to confirm the applicability of the present method for a $2{\times}3$ rectangular fire area. Also, a feasible asymptotic approach is discussed to reduce the computational burden for fire risk quantification.

  • Wave overflow can cause a failure of sea dike structure. Based on the results of the field surveys on mound-type sea dike, the failure of vicinity of crown and the scouring of toe at the landward was revealed as the most representative failure example. One of the main factors related to this failure pattern is overflow-induced pressure and velocity. Thus, in this study the analytical equations which can determine the pressure and the velocity induced by overflow in sea dike were proposed and verified. To accomplish this, assumed that the flow is quasi-steady and irrotational, and concentric circular streamlines around the vicinity of crown and toe of the sea dike. Flow was assumed as critical state and Bernoulli equation was used to develop the equations that can determine the pressure and velocity at the vicinity of crown and toe of the sea dike. Using these equations, the pressure and the velocity were calculated in condition of various overflow depths and radiuses of circular streamline. Based on the calculation results, while a negative pressure was occurred at the vicinity of crown, a significant amount of positive pressure occurred at the toe. The existence of flow-induced shear stresses was also confirmed. In addition, the limitation of the proposed equations was discussed.

  • This paper is to investigate the bearing capacity and the failure mechanism of slope subjected to strip surcharges adjassent to embankment slope of sandy soil. Parametric model tests under plain strain condition were performed by changing width of footing, relative density of slope materials, and position of footing from the crest of slopes. For model tests, Jumunjin standard sand was used as the slope material and its relative density was 45% and 70%, respectively. The angle of slope was formed with 1 : 1.5 and 1 2. Rigid model footings, made of aluminuu were used with their widths of 4, 7, 10 and 12cm. For the position of model footing, position ratios, distance of model footing from the crest of slope divided by footing width, were 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Failure mechanism was observed by using ink colored sands and markers inserted in model slopes. Ultimate bearing capacity obtained from tests was analyzed and compared with limit equilibrium method, limit analysis method and empirical equation. Characteristics of load-settlement curves and failure mechanism were also analyzed and compared with the existing theories. Thus, their effects on ultimate bearing capacity of model footing adjacent to slope were assessed.

  • This paper investigates the pseudo-static analysis of reinforced slopes with geosynthetics under the influence of the uniform surcharge to evaluate the maximum tensile force of reinforcements. The analytical approach has basically been used to develop the new practical procedure to estimate both tensile force and its distribution in the height of the slope. The base of developed relationships has been adapted from the conventional horizontal slice method. The limit equilibrium framework and the assumptions of log-spiral failure surface have directly been used for proposed analytical approach. A new analytical approach considering a single layer of non-cohesion soil and the influence of uniform surcharge has been extracted from the 5n equation and 5n unknown parameters. Results of the proposed method illustrated that the location of the surcharge, amount of internal friction and the seismic coefficient have the remarkable effect on the tensile force of reinforcement and might be 2 times increasing on it. Furthermore, outcomes show that the amount of tensile force has directly until 2 times related to the amount of slope angle and its height range. Likewise, it is observed that the highest value of the tensile force in case of slope degree more than 60-degree is observed on the lower layers. While in case of less degree the highest amount of tensile force has been reported on the middle layers and extremely depended to the seismic coefficient. Hence, it has been shown that the tensile force has increased more than 6 times compared with the static condition. The obtained results of the developed procedure were compared with the outcomes of the previous research. A good agreement has been illustrated between the amount results of developed relationships and outcomes of previous research. Maximum 20 and 25 percent difference have been reported in cases of static and seismic condition respectively.

  • This study is a part of research to develop a steel-concrete hybrid girder using ultra high-performance concrete with a compressive strength of 80 MPa. To this end, the Eurocode design formula for the shear resistance developed in a concrete-to-concrete interface was examined for the interface between concrete layers of different strengths. To examine the effect of the surface roughness on the shear resistance, a push-out test was conducted on specimens while considering the parameters of the Eurocode design equation. The actual behavior was evaluated with respect to the compressive strength of the concrete, the reinforcement ratio of the shear rebar, and the interfacial surface condition. The specimen with a rough interface shows 20-50% higher shear strength than that estimated by the design equation. In the case of failure mode, abrupt failure tends to occur at the interface of the concrete layer for the specimen with a low reinforcement ratio. It is expected that the shear strength of the concrete layer will increase according to the strength differential in the concrete layers.

  • Purpose: In this study, we apply environmental stress screening (ESS) to battle management system (BMS) of a tank and use the ESS profile based on production process data, guided by MIL-HDBK-781/344/2164. Methods: To optimize ESS Profile of the BMS of a tank, we estimate ESS model parameters (e.g., defect density, screening strength) using primary production failure reporting and corrective action system (FRACAS) data of military supply contract firm. Results: First, we collect the Primary production FRACAS data of military supply contract firm. Second, we compute curve fitting approach to find patent defect density and latent defect density using FRACAS data. Third, we solve the equation of Defect Density(patent defect density + latent defect density)($D_{IN}$) and Screening Strength(SS) Using second step data. As a result of analysis according to the order, we calculate $D_{IN}$(Temperature stress case : 74.02, Vibration stress : 10.252) and : SS(Temperature stress case : 0.4632, Vibration stress : 0.4142) and confirm the Condition II-D based on MIL-HDBK-344. According to Condition II-D, it is necessary to modify existing ESS profile through decreasing the $D_{IN}$ and increasing the SS. Conclusion: Identification of defect causes through ESS approach reduce defect densities for production. It provides feedback to a lessons-learned data base to avoid similar problems on next generation tank BMS.

  • The steam line break accident for Kori Unit 1 is analyzed by a code SYSRAN which calculates nuclear power and heat flux using the point kinetics equation and the lumped-parameter model and calculates system transient using the mass and energy balance equation with the assumption of uniform reactor coolant system pressure. The 1.4 f $t^2$ steam line break accident is analyzed at EOL (End of Life), hot shutdown condition in which case the accident would be most severe. The steam discharge rate is assumed to follow the Moody critical flow model. The results reveal the peak heat flux of 38% of nominal full power value at 60 second after the accident initiates, which is higher than the FSAR result of 26%. Trends for the transient are in good agreement with FSAR results. A sensitivity study shows that this accident is most sensitive to the moderator density coefficient and the lower plenum mixing factor. The DNBR calculation under the assumption of $F_{{\Delta}H}$=3.66, which is used in the FSAR with all the control and the shutdown assemblies inserted except one B bank assembly and of Fz=1.55 shows that minimum DNBR reaches 1.62 at 60 second, indicating that the fuel failure is not anticipated to occur. The point kinetics equation, the lumped-parameter model and the system transient model which uses the mass and energy balance equation are verified to be effective to follow the system transient phenomena of the nuclear power plants.lear power plants.
