Effective Room Equalization Using Warped Common Acoustical Pole and Zero (Warped Common Acoustical Pole and Zero 방법을 이용한 효율적인 공간 등화)

  • This paper presents a new method of designing room equalization filters using a warped common acoustical pole and zero (WCAPZ) modeling. The proposed method is capable of significantly reducing the order of the equalization filters without sacrificing the filter performance, especially, at low frequencies. Thus, the associated input-output delay is much smaller than the conventional block transform method while its computational complexity is comparable to it. The computational complexity also is still comparable to the conventional room equalization method, since the filter is implemented in the linear frequency domain after the pole-zero dewarping. Simulation results confirm that the use of the proposed algorithm significantly improves the room equalization over a range of low frequencies.

  • A mismatch between the training and the test conditions often causes a drastic decrease in the performance of the speech recognition systems. In this paper, non-linear transformation techniques based on histogram equalization in the acoustic feature space are studied for reducing the mismatched condition. The purpose of histogram equalization(HEQ) is to convert the probability distribution of test speech into the probability distribution of training speech. While conventional histogram equalization methods consider only the probability distribution of a test speech, for noise-corrupted test speech, its probability distribution is also distorted. The transformation function obtained by this distorted probability distribution maybe bring about miss-transformation of feature vectors, and this causes the performance of histogram equalization to decrease. Therefore, this paper proposes a new method of calculating noise-removed probability distribution by using assumption that the CDF of noisy speech feature vectors consists of component of speech feature vectors and component of noise feature vectors, and this compensated probability distribution is used in HEQ process. In the AURORA-2 framework, the proposed method reduced the error rate by over $44\%$ in clean training condition compared to the baseline system. For multi training condition, the proposed methods are also better than the baseline system.

Performance Analysis of Block Linear MMSE Equalization for OFDM Systems in Doubly Selective Channels (이중 선택적 채널 OFDM 시스템을 위한 블록 선형 MMSE 등화 방식의 성능 분석)

  • In this paper, we analyze the performance of the block linear MMSE equalization for OFDM systems in doubly selective channels by computer simulations. The block linear MMSE equalization shows somewhat unusual BER characteristics in that the BER curve drops at first as SNR increases but then rises up as SNR increases further beyond some point. In this paper, we investigate the BER characteristics of the block linear MMSE equalization by analyzing the condition number of the coefficient matrix in the linear system involved in the equalization process, and propose a new method to avoid the BER performance degradation at high SNR.

Performance Improvements of WiBro System Using the LVQ Blind Equalization (LVQ 자력등화를 이용한 와이브로 시스템의 성능 개선)

  • WiBro(Wireless Broadband Internet) is the standard of high-speed portable internet based on OFDMA/TDD (Orthogonal frequency division multiple access / Time division duplexing) techniques, and the subset of consolidated version of IEEE802.16e Wireless MAN standard. In this paper, we propose performance improvements of WiBro system using the LVQ(Learning Vector Quantization) blind equalization. Proposed method used the prefiltering LVQ neural network blind equalization in the Broadband WiBro system receiver. The prefiltering LVQ neural network constellates 16QAM that is transmitter data shape and the blind equalization removes ICI(Inter Carrier Interference). To verificate the proposed method usability, the MSE(Mean Square Error) and the BER(Bit Error Rate) are simulated. The simulation results shown that is improved the performances of the proposed WiBro system using the LVQ blind equalization than the existing WiBro system.

DWTHE: Decomposable Weighted and Thresholded Histogram Equalization (DWTHE: 분할 기반의 히스토그램 평활화)

  • Wang and Ward developed an image contrast enhancement method called WTHE (Weighted and Thresholded Histogram Equalization). In this paper, we propose an improved variant of WTHE called DWTHE(Decomposable WTHE) that enhances WTHE through the use of histogram decomposition. Specifically, DWTHE divides an input histogram by using image's mean brightness or equally-spaced brightness points, computes a probability value for each sub-histogram, modifies the sub-histograms by using those probability values as weights, and then performs histogram equalization on the modified input histogram. As opposed to WTHE that uses a single weight, DWTHE uses multiple weights derived from histogram decomposition. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the previous histogram equalization based methods.

The Clip Limit Decision of Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization for X-ray Images using Fuzzy Logic (퍼지를 이용한 X-ray 영상의 대비제한 적응 히스토그램 평활화 한계점 결정)

  • The contrast limited adaptive histogram equalization(CLAHE) is an advanced method for the histogram equalization which is a common contrast enhancement technique. The CLAHE divides the image into sections, and applies the contrast limited histogram equalization for each section. X-ray images can be classified into three areas: skin, bone, and air area. In clinical application, the interest area is limited to the skin or bone area depending on the diagnosis region. The CLAHE could deteriorate X-ray image quality because the CLAHE enhances the area which doesn't need to be enhanced. In this paper, we propose a new method which automatically determines the clip limit of CLAHE's parameter to improve X-ray image quality using fuzzy logic. We introduce fuzzy logic which is possible to determine clip limit proportional to the interest of users. Experimental results show that the proposed method improve images according to the user's preference by focusing on the subject.

The Design Method of WiBro System Using the SOFM Blind Equalization (SOFM 자력등화를 이용한 와이브로 시스템 설계 방법)

In this paper, we propose the design method of WiBro system using the SOFM Blind Equalization. Proposed design method used SOFM neural network blind equalization with Bussgang algorithms in the Broadband 16 QAM WiBro system receiver. To verificate the proposed design method usability, the MSE and the BER are simulated. The simulation results shown that is improved the equalization performances of the proposed WiBro system using the SOFM Blind equalization than the existing WiBro system.

Evaluation and Comparison of Signal to Noise Ratio According to Histogram Equalization of Heart Shadow on Chest Image (흉부영상에서 평활화 시 심장저부 음영의 신호 대 잡음비 비교평가)

  • The purpose of this study was to measure signal to noise ratio (SNR) according to change of equalization from region of interest (ROI) of heart shadow in chest image. We examined images of chest image of 87 patients in a University-affiliated hospital, Seoul, Korea. Chest images of each patient were calculated by using ImageJ. We have analysis socio-demographical variables, SNR according to images, 95% confidence according to SNR of difference in a mean of SNR. Differences of SNR among change of equalization were tested by SPSS Statistics21 ANOVA test for there was statistical significance 95%(p < 0.05). In SNR results, with the quality of distributions in the order of original chest image, original chest image heart shadow and equalization chest image, equalization chest image heart shadow(p < 0.001). In conclusion, this study would be that quantitative evaluation of heart shadow on chest image can be used as an adjunct to the histogram equalization chest image.

Concurrent Equalizer with Squared Error Weight-Based Tap Coefficients Update (오차 제곱 가중치기반 랩 계수 갱신을 적용한 동시 등화기)

  • For blind equalization of communication channels, concurrent equalization is useful to improve convergence characteristics. However, the concurrent equalization will result in limited performance enhancement by continuing concurrent adaptation with two algorithms after the equalizer converges to steady-state. In this paper, to improve the convergence characteristics and steady-state performance of the concurrent equalization, proposed is a new concurrent equalization technique with variable step-size parameter and weight-based tap coefficients update. The proposed concurrent vsCMA+DD equalization calculates weight factors using error signals of the variable step-size CMA (vsCMA) and DD (decision-directed) algorithm, and then updates the two equalizers based on the weights respectively. The proposed method, first, improves the error performance of the CMA by the vsCMA, and enhances the steady-state performance as well as the convergence speed further by the weight-based tap coefficients update. The performance improvement by the proposed scheme is verified through simulations.

Pilot Symbol Assisted Channel Estimation and Equalization for OFDM Systems in Doubly Selective Channels (주파수 선택적 시변 채널 OFDM 시스템에서의 파일럿 심볼을 이용한 채널 예측 및 등화)

  • In this paper, we analyze the performance of pilot symbol assisted channel estimation and equalization schemes for OFDM systems over frequency-selective time-varying channels and propose methods to improve the system performance. In the least square(LS) and linear minimum mean square error(MMSE) channel estimation, time domain windowing is introduced for banding the frequency domain channel matrix. The linear MMSE and decision feedback equalization schemes are employed with the pilot symbols for channel estimation taken into account in the equalization process. To reduce computational complexity, the band LU matrix factorization algorithm is introduced in solving the linear systems involved in the equalization, and the performances are compared with the known previous results by computer simulations. When time domain windowing is employed in the decision feedback equalization, the matrix related with the decision feedback process is shown to be unhanded and the resultant performance degradation is analyzed.
