The civilian and military agencies require the use of statistic-based allowable to design aerospace vehicles with composite materials. In order to comply this regulation, it is necessary to establish relatively large amount of database, which increases test costs and time. Recently NASA/FAA developed the new method which can satisfy the regulation with smaller test matrix through AGATE(Advanced General Aviation Transport Experiments) program. Especially the concept of material equivalency is very useful when the material has been certified in previous program, and it allows the engineer to use the database with the addition of small test matrix. This paper summarizes the material equivalency and acceptance test methodology so that composite material database can be shared and improve the credibility of the material quality. As a demonstration, the material design allowable of the high temperature carbon/epoxy composite developed domestically was determined with this methodology.
Graphite particle/carbon fiber hybrid conductive polymer composites were fabricated by the compression molding technique. Graphite particles were mixed with an epoxy resin to impart the electrical conductivity in the composite materials. In this study, graphite reinforced conductive polymer composites with high filler loadings were manufactured to accomplish high electrical conductivity above 100S/cm. Graphite particles were the main filler to increase the electrical conductivity of composites by direct contact between graphite particles. While high filler loadings are needed to attain good electrical conductivity, the composites becomes brittle. So carbon fiber was added to compensate weakened mechanical property. With increasing the carbon fiber loading ratio, the electrical conductivity gradually decreased because non-conducting regions were generated in the carbon fiber cluster among carbon fibers, while the flexural strength increased. In the case of carbon fiber 20wt.% of the total system, the electrical conductivity decreased 27%, whereas the flexural strength increased 12%.
This paper presents the evaluation of crashworthiness and rollover characteristics of low-floor bus vehicles made of aluminum honeycomb sandwich composites with glass-fabric epoxy laminate facesheets. Crashworthiness and rollover analysis of low-floor bus was carried out using explicit finite element analysis code LS-DYNA3D with the lapse of time. Material testing was conducted to determine the input parameters for the composite laminate facesheet model, and the effective equivalent damage model for the orthotropic honeycomb core material. The crash conditions of low-floor bus were frontal accident with speed of 60km/h. Rollover analysis were conducted according to the safety rules of European standard (ECE-R66). The results showed that the survival space for driver and passengers was secured against frontal crashworthiness and rollover of low-floor bus. Also, The modified Chang-Chang failure criterion is recommended to predict the failure mode of composite structures for crashworthiness and rollover analysis.
To evaluate and investigate the aging characteristics and the structural service lifetime of the CFV(carbon fiber pressure vessel), natural aging tests were carried out using the CFVs, which had been placed and aged at outdoor and indoor laboratories for 10 and 15 years, respectively. To obtain the probabilistic characteristics of ageing characteristics in aged CFVs, inner pressure loading test was conducted with ring specimens taken from aged CFVs. And, to observe the interface morphology of aged CFVs, the micro-photographs were taken by SEM microscope and the fractured interfaces between the carbon fiber and the matrix resin were scrutinized. Based on the Weibull parameters of the tensile failure strain of aged CFVs, the degradation of the 10 and the 15 year aged CFV occur by 19% and 23%, respectively, and the effect of the placement, whether being placed inside the laboratory or not, is not so significant. However, the outer layer protection, such as painting, is found very advantageous to prevent CFV from aging.
Pull-out and shear strengths of insert Joints of sandwich structure were investigated by experiment. Specimens were prepared by cocuring of nomex honeycomb core and carbon-epoxy composite face using an adhesive FM73. A total of 75 specimens with 10 different types depending on the core height and density, face thickness, and loading direction were tested. In the test under pull-out loading, although both the core height and density affect the failure loads, the effect of cell density is more serious. Dominant factor fur failure loads of the joints under shear loading is face thickness and the effect of core height is negligible. In the joint with same dimension, failure loads vary depending on the potted area of the core, particularly in the pull-out test.
Any pre-existed delamination defect present during manufacturing or induce during service loading conditions in the wingskin adherend invariably shows a greater loss of structural integrity of the spar wingskin joint (SWJ). In the present study, inter-laminar delamination propagation at the critical location of the SWJ has been carried out using contact and multi-point constraint finite elements available with commercial FE software (ANSYS APDL). Strain energy release rates (SERR) based on virtual crack closure technique have been computed for evaluation of the opening (Mode-I), sliding (Mode-II) and cross sliding (Mode-III) modes of delamination by sequential release of multi point constraint elements. The variations of different modes of SERR are observed to be significant by considering varied delamination lengths, material properties of adherends and radius of curvature of the SWJ panel. The SERR rates are seen to be much different at the two pre-embedded delamination ends. This shows dissimilar delamination propagation rates. The maximum is seen to occur in the delamination front in the unstiffened region of the wingskin. The curvature geometry and material anisotropy of SWJ adherends significantly influences the SERR values. Increase in the SERR values are observed with decrease in the radius of curvature of wingskin panel, keeping its width unchanged. SWJs made with flat FRP composite adherends have superior resistance to delamination damage propagation than curved composite laminated SWJ panels. SWJ made with Boron/Epoxy (B/E) material shows greater resistance to the delamination propagation.
Objectives: This study used micro-computed tomography (µCT) to compare voids and interfaces in single-cone obturation among AH Plus, EndoSequence BC, and prototype surface pre-reacted glass ionomer (S-PRG) sealers and to determine the percentage of sealer contact at the dentin and gutta-percha (GP) interfaces. Materials and Methods: Fifteen single-rooted human teeth were shaped using ProTaper NEXT size X5 rotary files using 2.5% NaOCl irrigation. Roots were obturated with a single-cone ProTaper NEXT GP point X5 with AH Plus, EndoSequence BC, or prototype S-PRG sealer (n = 5/group). Results: The volumes of GP, sealer, and voids were measured in the region of 0-2, 2-4, 4-6, and 6-8 mm from the apex, using image analysis of sagittal µCT scans. GP volume percentages were: AH Plus (75.5%), EndoSequence BC (87.3%), and prototype S-PRG (94.4%). Sealer volume percentages were less: AH Plus (14.3%), EndoSequence BC (6.8%), and prototype S-PRG (4.6%). Void percentages were AH Plus (10.1%), EndoSequence BC (5.9%), and prototype S-PRG (1.0%). Dentin-sealer contact ratios of AH Plus, EndoSequence BC, and prototype S-PRG groups were 82.4% ± 6.8%, 71.6% ± 25.3%, and 70.2% ± 9.4%, respectively. GP-sealer contact ratios of AH Plus, EndoSequence BC, and prototype S-PRG groups were 65.6% ± 29.1%, 80.7% ± 25.8%, and 87.0% ± 8.6%, respectively. Conclusions: Prototype S-PRG sealer created a low-void obturation, similar to EndoSequence BC sealer with similar dentin-sealer contact (> 70%) and GP-sealer contact (> 80%). Prototype S-PRG sealer presented comparable filling quality to EndoSequence BC sealer.

Objectives: This study evaluates the bond strength and marginal adaptation of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) Repair HP and Biodentine used as apical plugs; MTA was used as reference material for comparison. Materials and Methods: A total of 30 single-rooted teeth with standardized, artificially created open apices were randomly divided into 3 groups (n = 10 per group), according to the material used to form 6-mm-thick apical plugs: group 1 (MTA Repair HP); group 2 (Biodentine); and group 3 (white MTA). Subsequently, the specimens were transversely sectioned to obtain 2 (cervical and apical) 2.5-mm-thick slices per root. Epoxy resin replicas were observed under a scanning electron microscope to measure the gap size at the material/dentin interface (the largest and smaller gaps were recorded for each replica). The bond strength of the investigated materials to dentin was determined using the push-out test. The variable bond strengths and gap sizes were evaluated independently at the apical and cervical root dentin slices. Data were analyzed using descriptive and analytic statistics. Results: The comparison between the groups regarding the variables' bond strengths and gap sizes showed no statistical difference (p > 0.05) except for a single difference in the smallest gap at the cervical root dentin slice, which was higher in group 3 than in group 1 (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The bond strength and marginal adaptation to root canal walls of MTA HP and Biodentine cement were comparable to white MTA.
Ultrastructures of spermiogeneis in other invertebrates were investigated by several workes (Anderson, et al., 1967; Bloch, et al., 1964; Christen, 1961; Gatenby, et al., 1959; Paik, et al., 1968; Silveira, 1964; Yasuzumi, 1957) but spermiogenesis of dragonfly has not been reported previously. Testes and vass deferentia of the Korean dragonfly, Crocothemis servilia, were used for electron microscopic study of spermiogenesis. Materials were prefixed for 1-2 hours at $3^{\circ}C$ in 1.25% glutaraldehyde buffered to pH 7.2 with 0.2M sodium cacodylate buffer. Fixed tissue was washed twice in 0.2M cacodylate buffer and was subsequently postfixed for 2 hours at $3^{\circ}C$ in 1% osmium tetroxide buffered to pH 7.2 with 0.4M sodium cacodylate buffer solution. Specimens were dehydrated in graded ethyl alcohol, and finally embedded in epoxy Epon resin. Thin sections prepared from all the blocks were doubly stained; first in uranyl acetate and then in lead citrate. All thin sectios were examined with a Hitachi HS-7S electron microscope. The results of this study were summarized as follows. 1. Along the condensation of chromatin in nucleus, the shpae of nucleus was changed from spherical shpae to ellipse and cone cell type. 2. During the elongation of nucleus and the migration of cytoplasm, the nucleus removed to the one side of spermatid and began to invaginate from the posterior portion of nucleus. 3. There are ring centrioles in invaginated portion and axial filaments derived from centriole extend to the tail through the tailward half of spermatid. 4. In the cross sections the axial filament consisted of a central sheath, a central fibril, and 9 peripheral doublets.
Conservation treatment was done for the pottery-stand of Kaya period which was to be exhibited in celebration of the opening of Kimhae National Museum and for the jar of Chinese celadon which was to be exhibited in Korea National Museum's special exhibition "Formation of Ancient States". Through the examinations by naked eyes and under the microscope, condition before treatment, patterns and manufacturing techniques of the objects were observed. According to these examinations, conservation treatments, suitable for each object was finished. As the pottery-stand was damaged severely, the epoxy resin was pasted directly on the broken surface of the pottery to restore the original shape and pattern, color and feeling similar to original state were given to the restored area. Although same restoration material was applied on the celadon, it was not pasted directly on the broken surface of the celadon so that the restored area could be dismantled, and color and feeling were also treated somewhat differently.
