  • Previously, we reported two types of vanadate-sensitive ATPases in the micro somes of tracheal epithelial cells, a high-affinity one and a low-affinity one. The low affinity vanadate-sensitive (LAVS) ATPase was sensitive to thapsigargin and cyclopiazonic acid, specific antagonists of ER-type Ca$\^$2+/-ATPase, and mediated microsomal $\^$45/Ca$\^$2+/ uptake, implying that the LAVS-ATPase is an ER/SR-type Ca$\^$2+/-ATPase.(omitted)

  • Two types of normal human breast epithelial cells (HBECs) have already been established and characterized. Type I HBECs are deficient in gap junctional intercellular communication and are capable of anchorage-independent growth and of expressing luminal epithelial cell markers, a variant estrogen receptor (ER), and stem cell characteristics.(omitted)

  • Extracts were prepared from six different poisonous mushrooms in order to identify biologically active natural ligands. The effects of these extracts were examined on the microsomal $^{45}$ Ca$^{2+}$ uptake and $^{45}$ Ca$^{2+}$ release. Five out of six species apparently inhibited the activity of total microsomal ATPases prepared from the epithelial cells of pig airway. (omitted)ted)

  • Two types of vanadate-sensitive $Ca^{2+}$-ATPases have been characterized in the microsomes of tracheal epithelial cells, a high affinity vanadate-sensitive (HA VS) and a low affinity vanadate-sensitive (LAVS) $Ca^{2+}$-ATPases. The LA VS $Ca^{2+}$-ATPase was sensitive to thapsigargin, implying that it is an ER/SR-type $Ca^{2+}$-ATPase.(omitted)d)

  • Many studies have identified the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) as a key regulator for various cellular functions including cell survival, growth and motility. We have previously shown that H-ras, but not N-ras, induces invasiveness and motility in human breast epithelial cells (MCF10A), while both H-ras and N-ras induce transformed phenotype.(omitted)

  • Transforming growth factor-${\beta}$ (TGF-${\beta}$), a hormonally active polypeptide found in normal and transformed tissues, regulates cellular growth and phenotyphic plasticity. We have previously shown that H-ras, but not N-ras, induces invasive phenotype in MCF10A human breast epithelial cells.(omitted)

  • Ras expression has been suggested as a marker for tumor aggressiveness of breast cancer, including the degrees of invasion and tumor recurrence. We previously showed that p38 MAPK is a key signaling molecule differentially regulated by H-ras and N-ras, leading to H-ras-specific cell invasive and migrative phenotypes in human breast epithelial cells (Cancer Res.: 63, 5454-5461, 2003).(omitted)

  • Osteopontin (OPN) is a glycosylated phosphoprotein which mediates cell adhesion and migration, and is produced by bone, macrophages, endothelial cells, and epithelial cells. The many regulatory functions of OPN include bone remodeling, tumor invasion, wound repair, and promotion of cell survival. It is produced by renal tubular epithelial cells, and expression is upregulated in glomerulonephritis, hypertension, ischemic acute renal failure, renal ablation, and UUO. In this review, we discuss about osteopontin in general aspect, expression, role on the development and pathologic condition of neonatal kidney.

  • Extracts of Artemisia asiatica Nakai (Asteraceae) possess anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative activities. Eupatilin (5,7-dihydroxy-3,4,6-tri-methoxy-flavone), one of the pharmacologically active ingredients derived from Artemisia asiatica, was shown to induce apoptosis in human promyelocytic leukemia (HL-60) cells (H.-J. Seo and Y.-J. Surh, Mutat. Res., 496, 191-198, 2001). In the present study, we examined the cytostatic effects of eupatilin in H-ras-transformed human breast epithelial (MCF10A-ras) cells. (omitted)

  • Garlic (Allium sativum) has been used as a general food and a remedy in Oriental for a long time. Since garlic compounds have been also shown to inhibit growth of tumors and to modulate the activity of carcinogenesis, the effects of allicin on growth and survival in human gastric epithelial cells were evaluated by cell viability, cell cycle analysis and DNA fragmentation. Protein levels of cytochrome C, Bcl-xL, Bax and AIF were detected by Western blotting. Effects of recombinant VacA on caspase proteases activity were also determined. (omitted)
