This study was undertaken to investigate effects of alcohol and dietary protein levels on serum lipids and enzyme activities in 15 week-old male rats given a normal diet. Rats were divided into 8 groups : control group (16% protein 16PC) and 8%(8PE) 16%(16PE) and 24% protein groups(24PE) to which was given 5% ethanol mixed into their drinking water after 4 weeks and 10 weeks. Body weight organ weight and various blood components were determined at 4 and 10 weeks. Body weight gain organ weight hemoglobin concentration and hematocrit value were not influenced by ethanol and dietary protein levels. The levels of total cholesterol HDL-cholesterol and phospholipid in serum were not affected by ethanol consumption. Serum triglyceride concen-trations after 10 weeks were significnatly increased ethanol-treated group compared with that of control group and the effect was greater in low protein group than control group. Serum ALP activity was significantly higher in 8PE group than other group but there was no influence by ethanol consumption.
Cervus elaphus for herb-acupuncture solution (CEHAS) was tested for the effects of free radical generating enzyme and lipid peroxidation in rat's kidney. In vitro, levels of lipid peroxide in tissues of kidney were proportionally decreased to concentration of extracts prepared from CEHAS. They were much more decreased, when lipid peroxidation was induced with ferrous iron (FeII). Also, enzyme activities of xinthine oxidase were decreased. The ratio of type conversion of xanthine oxidase was lowered, two. But, it was not seen changes on enzyme activities of aldehyde oxidase. These results suggest that CEHAS decrease the activities of free radical generating enzymes such as xanthine oxidase which form lipid peroxide.
Several serum enzyme activities were measured after intraBeritoneal administration of 0.01 ml $CCl_{4}$ per 100 g of body weight in Sprague Dawley rats. Senun AST activity increased significantly after administration of CCl$_{4}$ (P<0.05). The serum AST activity at 2 hours after $CCl_{4} administration (475 {\pm} 10^{6} IU/L)$ was significantly higher than that of control group $(65 {\pm} 14 IU/L)$. The high level of serum AST activity maintained up to 48 hours. Serum ALT activity in $CCl_{4}$-treated groups was also significantly higher from 4 hours after treatment companied to control group and the high level maintained up to 48 hours. Serum ALP and ${\gamma} GTP activities in CCl_{4}$-treated groups were significantly higher from 8 hours after treatment compared to control group and the level maintained up to 48 hours.
The effects of dietary Coix(lacryma-jobi) water extract on the antioxidant enzyme activity in the liver and kidney of Sprague-Dawley rats were studied. Forty-five rats were fed for 3 weeks with either control diet or experimental diets that contain either Coix water extract or Coix water residue. Twenty percent of the carbohydrate was replaced with Coix water residue by dry weight in the water residue diet, while distilled water was replaced by Coix water extract to make a pellet-form diet in the Coix water extract diet. The levels of glutathione, glutathione-peroxidase, and glutathione-S-transferase activities in liver and kidney were measured . It has been found that glutathione, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione-S-transferase enzyme activities from activities from liver and kidneyof the rats were enhanced in the group fed with Coix water extract.

The protective effect of jujube methanol extract on benzo(a)pyrene(B(a)P)-induced liver injury was studied in rats in vitro and in vivo. Jujube methanol extract significantly recovered the enzyme activities(GOT, GPT, LDH and ALP) and lipid contents(total cholesterol, triglyceride and HDL-cholesterol) changed by B(a)P to normal levels in vivo. in viro experiment jujube methanol extract didn't stimulate hepatocyte proliferation but significantly recovered the enzyme activities(GOT, GPT and LDH) in comparison to group Ⅱ administered B(a)P only. It was suggested that jujube methanol extract have a protective effect on liver injury by B(a)P.
The study investigated the lipid metabolism of Tsaiya ducks under fasting and ad libitum feeding conditions. Sixty Tsaiya ducks in their growing period (8-12 wk-old) and sixty Tsaiya ducks in their laying period (26-30 wk-old, 10-14 weeks after the onset of laying) were randomly divided into ad libitum feeding and 3-day fasting groups. The activities of lipid metabolism related enzymes were determined. Experimental results indicated that fasting depressed the activities of lipogenesis related enzymes such as fatty acid synthetase and NADP-malic dehydrogenase in both periods (p<0.05). Fasting also increased the activities of liver fatty acid $\beta$-oxidation enzymes (p<0.05). However, the activities of lipoprotein lipase in adipose tissue, heart and ovarian follicle in both periods and the hormone-sensitive lipase of adipose tissue in the growing period were decreased by fasting (p<0.01).
The antioxidant enzyme and DPPH radical scavenging activity with variations in drying methods of diploid and tetraploid in Platycodon grandiflorum were determined. Antioxidant enzyme activities were measured as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POX), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX). The roots of Platycodon grandiflorum were freeze-dried, indoor-dried, hot-air dried, and microwave dried. The root extract of P. grandiflorum have shown the highest SOD enzyme activity of 92% in tetraploid of freeze-dried and indoor-dried while diploid of microwave dried showed the lowest SOD enzyme activity of 47.5%. The activity of CAT showed higher values in the root of tetraploid than in the diploid of P. grandiflorum in all drying methods. The APX activity showed relatively higher values in the root extract of freeze-dried both the diploid and tetraploid, but the difference in comparison with other extracts was not significant. The POX activities according to drying methods of diploid and tetraploid in P. grandiflorum showed relatively high values in freeze-dried and indoor-dried compared with other drying methods, and the POX activity between the diploid and tetraploid was not significant difference in each drying method. The DPPH radical scavenging activity with variation in drying methods of diploid and tetraploid in P. grandiflorum was the highest in the freeze-dried, and was higher in tetraploid than diploid in all the concentrations. In conclusion, the root of P. grandiflorum had the potent biological activities in both diploid and tetraploid. In particular, the tetraploid root of P. grandiflorum showing high antioxidant enzyme activity could be good materials for development of source of functional healthy food.
To determine the effect of low dose gamma radiation on the germination and enzyme activities, seeds of Chinese cabbage (Brassica compestris L. cv. Hanyoreum) and radish (Raphanus sativus L. cv. Chungsukoungzoung) were irradiated at the dose of 2-50 Gy. The germination rate of irradiation group was higher than that of the control. Especially it was highest at the early stage. The germination rate of Chinese cabbage was high at 2 Gy and 8 Gy irradiation group and that of radish was high at 2 Gy, 6 Gy and 10 Gy irradiation group. Growth of both seedlings of Chinese cabbage and radish increased positively in low dose irradiation group. The height of Chinese cabbage was noticeably high at 4 Gy and 10 Gy irradiation group and that of radish at 6 Gy irradiation group. The protein contents of seedlings from seeds irradiated with the low dose gamma radiation was higher than the control, especially at the early stage. The enzyme activities of seedlings from seeds irradiated with the low dose gamma radiation was high at 4 Gy and 10 Gy irradiation group. These results suggest that the germination, growth and enzyme activities of old vegetable seeds could be promoted by the low dose gamma radiation.
The effects of green manure crops, hairy vetch and sesban, supplemented with HS (humic substance) on biological soil health indicators was studied in a pot containing two kinds of reclaimed soil previously contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons; a soil remediated by land-farming (DDC) and another soil by low-temperature thermal desorption (YJ). Treatments include no plant (C), plants only (H), and plants+2% HS (PH), which were evaluated in a pot containing respective soil. Biological indicators include microbial community analysis as well as soil enzyme activities of dehydrogenase, 𝛽-glucosidase, N-acetyl-𝛽-D-glucosaminidase (NAG), acid/alkaline phosphatase, arylsulfatase, and urease. Results showed an increase of enzyme activities in pot soils with plants and even greater in soils with plants+HS. The enzyme activities of DDC soil with plants (DDC_P) and with plants+HS (DDC_PH) increased 1.6 and 3.9 times on average, respectively than those in the control. The enzyme activities YJ soil with plants (YJ_P) and with plant+HS (YJ_PH) increased 1.8 and 3.8 times on average, respectively than those in the control. According to microbial community analysis, the relative abundance of nitrogen-fixing bacteria in DDC and YJ soil was increased from 1.5% to 7% and from 0 to 5%, respectively, after planting hairy vetch and sesban. This study showed that mixed planting of green manure crops with a supplement of humic substance is highly effective for the restoration of biological health indicators of reclaimed soils.
Lysosomal enzyme latency was demonstrated for hydrolases from porcine leukocyte by suspending sediment sfrom differential centrifugation in 0.125 to 0.250 M sucrose. Specific activities pH optima and activation energies were determined for hydrolases distributed in various sedimentation fractions and for enzymes solubilized by n-butyl alcohol extraction. Specific activities of the hydrolases revealed the heterogeneity of the Iysosomal fractions relative to enzyme content. pH optima identified the enzyme as acid hydrolases with optima for cathepsin D and aryl sulfatase also at pH 6.8. Activation energies of some hydrolases were low revealing that these enzymes could function efficiently during low temperature aging of meat.
