  • The objective of this study is to investigate and evaluate that a roadside tree root intrudes sewer network systems. Two approaches were performed to assess the characteristics of tree root intrusion. First, the characteristics of tree roots that had invaded sewers were directly observed by means of closed-circuit television inspection robot. Second, the intrusion proportions of tree root into rain gutters in the sampling area were investigated. As tree species of low intrusion proportions, the results indicated that Ginkgo biloba Linn. and Acer buergerianum Miq. were 1.7% and 4.3%. On the other hand, tree species of high intrusion proportions were Metasequoia glyptostroboides Hu et Cheng, Ulmus davidiana var. japonica Nakai and Zelkova serrata Makino as 22.2%, 20.4%, and 17.6% respectively. In particular, sewers and gutters around Zelkova species should be the focus of maintenance work because of the high proportion of these trees on roadsides.

  • Performance of shear-deficient reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened with carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) strips/sheets is analyzed through numerical simulations on four-point bending tests. The numerical simulations are carried out using the finite element (FE) program ABAQUS. A micromechanics-based constitutive model (Liang et al. 2006) is implemented into the FE program ABAQUS to model CFRP strips/sheets. The predicted results are compared with experiment data (Khalifa and Nanni 2002) to assess the accuracy of the proposed FE analysis approach. A series of numerical tests are conducted to investigate the influence of stirrup lay-ups on the shear strengthening performance of the CFRP strips/sheets, to illustrate the influence of the damage parameters on the microcrack density evolution in concrete, and to investigate the shear and flexural strengthening performance of CFRP strips/ sheets. It has been shown that the proposed FE analysis approach is suitable for the performance prediction of RC beams strengthened with CFRP strips/sheets.

  • A series of long chain unsaturated ketone (alkenone) was identified in the particulate organic matter sampled from surface water of the eastern South Sea, Korea. The seawater temperature based on the $C_{37}$ alkenone was calculated by using several different equations of unsaturation index(${U^{K'}}_{37}$), compared with in situ CTD temperature. Among the previously reported equations, the equation(0.044T-0.204) which was proposed by Sawada et al.(1996) seems to be the most useful for the calculation of $C_{37}$ alkenone temperature, showing average $0.51^{\circ}C$ difference between ${U^{K'}}_{37}$ temperature and in situ CTD temperature. This result suggest that alkenone should be a useful molecular biomarker for reconstructing paleo-environmental change in the South and East Sea, Korea. However, it is required to establish more reliable equation for the calculation of $C_{37}$ alkenone temperature.

  • Evapotranspiration (ET) from the various surfaces needs to be understood because it is a crucial hydrological factor to grasp interaction between the land surface and the atmosphere. A traditional way of estimating it, which is calculating it empirically using lysimeter and pan evaporation observations, has a limitation that the measurements represent only point values. However, these measurements cannot describe ET because it is easily affected by outer circumstances. Thus, remote sensing technology was applied to estimate spatial distribution of ET. In this study, we estimated major components of energy balance method (i.e. net radiation flux, soil heat flux, sensible heat flux, and latent heat flux) and ET as a map using Mapping Evapo-Transpiration with Internalized Calibration (METRIC) satellite-based image processing model. This model was run using Landsat imagery of Gyeongan watershed in Korea on Feb 1, 2003 and Sep 13, 2006. Basic statistical analyses were also conducted. The estimated mean daily ETs had respectively 22% and 11% of errors with pan evaporation data acquired from the Suwon Weather Station. This result represented similar distribution compared with previous studies and confirmed that the METRIC algorithm had high reliability in the watershed. In addition, ET distribution of each land use type was separately examined. As a result, it was identified that vegetation density had dominant impacts on distribution of ET. Seasonally, ET in a growing season represented significantly higher than in a dormant season due to more active transpiration. The ET maps will be useful to analyze how ET behaves along with the circumstantial conditions; land cover classification, vegetation density, elevation, topography.

  • We synthesized ion exchange resin that can remove $NO_3\;^-$ selectively rather than $SO_4\;^{2-}$. Ion exchange property of the synthesized ion exchange resin occurred like the following process, $NO_3\;^-$ > $SO_4\;^{2-}$, the efficiency of functional group to remove $NO_3\;^-$ occurred in the process of $NPr_3$ > $NBu_3$ > $NEt_3$ > $NMe_3$ > $NPe_3$ > $N(EtOH)_3$, and the efficiency of functional group to remove $SO_4\;^{2-}$ occurred in the process of $NMe_3$ > $NEt_3$ > $NPr_3$ > $NBu_3$ > $NPe_3$.

  • The fruits of Taxus cuspidata were collected, divided into seeds and fruits, and extracted with 95% EtOH. The extracts were evaporated under the reduced vacuum pressure, concentrated, then successively fractionated with a series of n-hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and water on a separatory funnel to get some freeze dried samples. A portion of the EtOAc (arils:1.65 g, seeds:1.04 g) and $H_2O$ (arils:7 g, seeds:10 g) soluble samples were chromatographed on a Sephadex column using MeOH-$H_2O$ (1:1, 1:3, 1:5, v/v), EtOH-hexane (3:1, v/v) mixture and 100% $H_2O$ as eluting solvents to isolate pure compounds from the fractions. The isolates were developed by cellulose TLC using t-BuOH-HOAc-$H_2O$ (TBA; 3:1:1, v/v/v) and 6% aqueous HOAc. Visualization was done under ultraviolet light and by spraying the vanillin-HCl-EtOH reagent (4.8:12:480, v/v/v). followed by heating. The structures of the isolates were characterized by $^1H$- and $^{13}C$-NMR, DEPT, 2D-NMR, LC/MS and EI-MS spectra. In addition to the NMR and MS spectra, acid hydrolysis and permethylation were used to determine the correct structure of the isolated sugar compound. Their structures were elucidated as (+)-catechin (1), (-)-epicatechin (2), (+)-gallocatechin (3), (-)-epigallocatechin (4) and ${\beta}$-D-fructofuranose-($2{\rightarrow}4$)-O-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranose($1{\rightarrow}4$)-O-${\alpha}$-D-glucopyranose ($1{\rightarrow}2$)-O-${\beta}$-D-fructofuranose (5) on the basis of the above experimental evidences.

  • Ozone ($O_3$) is a main component of photochemical oxidants and a phytotoxic air pollutant. Although the current levels of tropospheric $O_3$ in East Asia could adversely affect productivity of forest tree species, risk assessments of $O_3$ impact were limited. In this paper, we summarize the methodology of risk assessment of $O_3$ on forest tree species based on our two previous studies, risk assessments of $O_3$ impact on the growth of Fagus crenata by Watanabe et al. (2012) and on the annual carbon absorption of three representative conifers, Cryptomeria japonica, Pinus densiflora and Larix kaempferi by Watanabe et al. (2010). $O_3$ sensitivity of each tree species obtained from an experimental study, $O_3$ exposure and atmospheric N deposition based on field monitoring and vegetation survey were integrated by geographic information system method. Based on the results, we conclude that the area with high risk of $O_3$ impact does not necessarily correspond to the area with high $O_3$ exposure. The varieties of tree habitat, tree sensitivity to $O_3$ and annual carbon absorption among the tree species, and N deposition-induced change in the $O_3$ sensitivity of F. crenata are raised as the factors of discordance between areas with high risk and those with high $O_3$ exposure. In the last part of this paper, we discuss the present uncertainty and perspectives of risk assessment for the future studies on the impact of $O_3$ on forest tree species in East Asia.

  • This paper explains the effects of wood drying on treatability (as determined by water uptake) of Japanese red pine (Pinus densiflora S. et Z.) at the sevenmoisture content (MC) levels above and below the fiber saturation point (FSP). According to the experimental results, it was found that water uptake (as the percentage of void volume filledwith distilled water, VVF%) was influenced by level of moisture content and percentage of void volume filled was improved effectively by kiln drying process. A significant relationship between moisture content and treatability was established. Permeability and liquid uptake were decreased above the FSP due to the effect of the less void space available in wood. Even though increased liquid uptake was observed at lower moisture content, no significant differences was observed moisture content below 20%. Therefore, this species need to be initially dried below FSP before treated with liquids. But drying moisture content below 10% might not be economical for the commercial purpose comparing drying the wood between 10 and 20% moisture content. The result of this study inferred that the treatability of pine wood can be improved by reducing the moisture content up to a certain level of 10~20% for allowing better performance.
