  • The instances of the damage to livestock are increasing with frequent environmental disputes on the noise and vibration. This study analyzed 134 open cases dealing with the environmental disputes on livestock damaged by noise and vibration, and being intervened by National Environmental Dispute Resolution Commission. The environmental disputes on the noise and vibration account for 86% of all the disputes, and cases of the consequent damages to livestock have increased. As shown in the 134 cases, pig is the most lethal livestock attacked by the noise and vibration. During last 10 years, 89% of the noise damages hurting the livestock resulted from the noises pertaining to construction and 58% was due to the noise damages from the road constructions. The noise levels in the range of 70~80 dB(A) and the vibration levels of 70~75 dB(V) caused most of the disputes. The average rate of reimbursement for the livestock damages for the last 10 years was higher than the average rate of reimbursement of the total disputes intervened by National Dispute Resolution Commission.

  • Apartment housing is a widely-spread type in Korean housing market. Nevertheless, it has caused serious problems such as traditional community corruption, unsafe structure, defects and litigation from noise. Noise, especially in concrete structure for apartment housing, is hardly controlled in proper to prevent sound transmission between upper and lower families with existing system, In foreign countries, there are floating floor systems to enhance the noise control performance in multi-family housing. Therefore, this study aims to analyze subjective responses on sound characteristics in residential buildings. We analyzed the residential response and the quantities of measured data from environmental noise. The results of this study will be useful to provide guideline to make policy of environmental noise and criteria.

  • In this paper, we proposed a new audio fingerprint extraction method, based on Philips' music retrieval algorithm, which uses the energy difference of neighboring filter-bank and probabilistic characteristics of music. Since Philips method uses too many filter-banks in limited frequency band, it may cause audio fingerprints to be highly sensitive to additive noises and to have too high correlation between neighboring bands. The proposed method improves robustness to noises by reducing the number of filter-banks while it maintains the discriminative power by representing the energy difference of bands with 2 bits where the quantization levels are determined by probabilistic characteristics. The correlation which exists among 4 different levels in 2 bits is not only utilized in similarity measurement. but also in efficient reduction of searching area. Experiments show that the proposed method is not only more robust to various environmental noises (street, department, car, office, and restaurant), but also takes less time for database search than Philips in the case where music is highly degraded.

  • The apartment houses are increasing for more efficient use of land in our country. Noises form upper story in the silent night makes nervous and uncomfortable. Worst of all, it causes a mental disease. The other side these condition could be a environmental pollution. To prevent like this noise, a variety of sound reducible products are developed and applied in the building construction fields. In this article I' d like to introduce the method of measurement of the impact sound insulation and its practice.

  • With the development of public transportation, the use of subways as a means of transportation in the city center is increasing, so that vibrations and structural noises are emerging as a new environmental issues. This study can be used as a basis for research on subway safety and shock mitigation by applying vibration-proof mat.

  • Land cover map of 30 arc-second grid by NOAA AVHRR data for the whole Asia was produced by the authors as the project of the Asian Association on Remote Sensing(AARS). Land cover change monitoring of continental scale by satellite data needs preprocessing to remove undesirable factors due to noises, atmosphere, or the effect by solar zenith angle. The paper describes the method to remove these factors. The most important thing for better mapping/monitoring in the future is the accumulation of ground truth data by many land cover related researchers. The project of the development of Global Land Cover Ground Truth Database(GLCGT-DB) is proposed.

  • Environmental noise in the residential area is appeared with different types and features along with the growth of society. In particular when the economic level is raised up, the demand of residents for the environmental noise becomes more sensitive. The existing research on the environmental noise was initiated in the 1980's and resulted that the children's jumping sound was most annoying among the noises transmitted from the other unit. This result caused such activities that the researches were focused on the floor impact noise and that the laws in relation to environmental noise within residential area were revised strictly. This study aimed to survey the consciousness of residents for the environmental noise and to see how it is changed comparing with the previous one. Ultimately this result could be useful to establish the target for research or noise control to make the comfortable residential environment.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the noise level and frequency experienced by premature infants receiving incubator care in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Methods: The participants were 20 premature infants receiving incubator care in the NICU of a university hospital in Daejeon Metropolitan city. The noise level was measured using a professional sound-level meter (ET-958, FLUS, Shenzhen, China) based on a noise classification table developed by the author. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, the t-test, analysis of variance, and Pearson correlation coefficients using SPSS for Windows version 22.0. Results: The average noise level experienced by premature infants receiving incubator care in the NICU was 51.25 dB (range: 45.0~81.7 dB). The frequency of noises was highest for factors related to nursing activities (40.3%), followed by human factors (29.1%), machine alarm sounds (20.1%), incubator operation (6.6%), and internal environmental factors (3.9%). Conclusion: According to the above results, the noise level experienced by premature infants receiving incubator care in the NICU exceeded the recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an interventional program to reduce noise in the NICU, and to conduct follow-up studies to verify its effectiveness.
