An Investigation on Migration of Uranium in Soils and Plants in a Phytoremediation System

  • Plant species have shown the capability to absorb U into the biomass. Norman(l952) even suggested that uranyl ion acts as an accessory microelement in growth of Lemna and flax roots. The plants, termed metal hyperaccumulators, can extract and accumulate more than 1000-10,000mg heavy metal per kilogram of dry weight of plants (0.1-1%). The most vital main factors influencing the ability and efficiency of phytoremediation is the ability of the plant to uptake the metals from soil before the accumulation mechanism happens in the plant tissue.   • For the potential application of smart materials to seismic structural control, this paper reviews seismic control techniques for civil engineering structures, and developments of smart materials for vibration and noise control. Analytical and finite element methods adopted for the design of distributed sensors/actuators using piezoelectric materials are discussed. Investigation of optimum position of sensors/actuators and damping are also outlined.

First Record of Four Soil Ciliates from Korea

  • During our investigation of ciliates from Korea, four ciliates were isolated from the non-flood Petri dish culture of soil. They were cultured under laboratory condition and studied using standard methods morphologically, including living observations, protargol impregnations, and morphometrics. The four species are Metopus hasei Sondheim, 1929, Urosomoida agiliformis Foissner, 1982, Oxytricha proximata Shibuya, 1930, and Cladotricha sp. in Nie${\ss}$en (1984) respectively.

  • The purpose of this study was development of a simple phytoplankton model for reservoir and applied DaeCheung reservoir. The effects of light intensity, PO$_{4}$-P, settling rate and flushing loss on phytoplankton growth are analyzed. This paper describes as investigation of the potential of simple phytoplankton models to d/splay chaotic instability, but given the observation of chaotic behavior in other simple simulation systems, such behavoir may actually be real fluctuation in the system response.

  • During the cleanup of US Department of energy facilities, contaminated materials, toxic and hazardous radionuclides (e.g., Th, Cs, and U) and heavy metals (e.g., Cr, Hg, Pb, and Ni)-laden ultrafine particles are generated. The size of the particles is up to about 200 nm. Understanding of the production of these nanometer size particles is critical in determining the surface cleaning efficiently. (omitted)

  • A treatability investigation was conducted to determine if landfarming would be effective for the remediation of unsanitary landfill waste soils. Calculations based on biodegradable organic carbon contents and initial CO$_2$ evolution rates revealed that landfarming has a high potential for landfill site remediation and that the optimum strategy for bioremediation is site-specific.

  • A male Spheropistha melanosoma Yaginuma, 1957 from Korea in the family Theridiidae Sundevall, 1833 is described with measurements and morphological photos of the diagnostic characteristics. This species was collected with a sweep net around arable lands in a mountainous mixed forest during the investigation of spider fauna on Ulleungdo Island in 2019.
