  • The aim of this study was to study the functions and roles of Green Community Rediscovery Center (GCRC) in terms of community integration, to design GCRC with various types of green roofs, and to investigate the possibility of applying a renewable energy system (e.g., PV) to the building greenery systems. The four major functional modules for GCRC were suggested: implementation of ecopark and community gardens with environmental education programs, implementation of green housing model with education programs, Discover Science Center, and implementation of green business model with education programs. Three major functions of the center are also presented in terms of design: 1) functions of community gardens; 2) establishment of a green business model, community composting system and an urban farming system; and 3) roles of community gardens in social interactions within GCRC. GCRC provides residents with the opportunities of community gardens, urban farming based on a successful recycling system, as well as a green business model and environmental education programs near their homes. The air temperature of the green roof (utilizing Sedum sarmentosum as a cover plant) was approximately $3^{\circ}C$ lower than that of the non-green roof, indicating a potential efficiency increase in PV systems for GCRC. It was concluded that the GCRC suggested would enhance the neighborhood satisfaction, improve the quality of life and contribute to social integration and community regeneration.

  • A very reliable and specific method for the identification of fungi in ectotrophic mycorrhizal symbiosis was developed using a specific PCR assay based on the amplification of the ITS1 region. To obtain specific data, an ITS-diagnostic assay was carried out that reveals genera and species specific sequences. Here, an application of one method is presented, which covers the identification of pure mycelia, basidiocarps as well as mixed samples such as ectomycorrhizal roots that were mingled with remains of the host plant. For this purpose a protocol was established that allowed the extraction of DNA from single mycorrhizal roots. In order to perform a specific ITS analysis we generated a new ITS-primer(ITS8) by a multiple alignment of five different genera and species of mycorrhizal fungi. The utilization of ITS1 and ITS8 resulted in specific PCR amplicons, which were characterized by sequencing without purification steps, even when the template DNA was associated with roots.

In the reality that many people of the world have been painful of the water shortage problem, Korea is classified as 'water shortage country'. Here, we investigated the awareness of middle school students about the contents related to the water shortage problem by surveying with the questionnaires developed in this study. And we analyzed how water shortage problem appeared in the environmental textbook of middle school. Based on these, we examined the direction of environmental education in middle school on the theme of the water shortage problem. The results of the survey showed that students revealed difference of knowledge and experience, and also revealed difference of knowledge and feeling related to the water shortage problem. The students had the knowledge about water shortage problem but they did not have experience in their real lives. Also, the results of the survey showed that students had attitude of waste in water use, even though they had awareness and knowledge about the importance of water resources. And the students did not have enough knowledge related to the water shortage problem. From the analysis of the textbooks, We found that the contents were not composed to enhance deep understanding of the students about the water shortage problem. • Objectives: We evaluated the effects of an allergy control program on children with atopic dermatitis (AD) in five schools located within Gyeonggi-do. Methods: Based on the results of the 12-month prevalence of AD symptoms from an International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) questionnaire of all students (n=2109; 1040 boys, 1069 girls) at five randomly selected schools, 227 students with AD symptoms were screened. Finally, 188 students with greater than 1 on SCORAD (SCORing Atopic Dermatitis) determined by a physician were selected. The allergy control program includes education related to allergic diseases, skin prick tests, and SCORAD evaluation, as well as keeping a daily journal to check the usage of moisturizer at least once a day. To determine the effectiveness of the allergy control program, SCORAD evaluation was performed again six weeks later. Results: The most common symptom for 12-month prevalence was rhinorrhea (33.9%), followed by atopic skin lesions (14.8%) and wheezing (4.0%). The 12-month prevalences of the three allergic diseases were higher for boys than for girls, and a significant difference was found for allergic rhinitis (P<0.001). The mean SCORAD index decreased significantly from 26.1 to 17.5 after the completion of the six-week control program (P<0.01). In particular, these differences were more pronounced for the group which used the daily journal (P<0.001). Conclusions: Our findings indicate that the allergy control program including usage of a daily journal as well as regular monitoring could be a promising tool for preventing and alleviating the symptoms of allergic diseases.

  • Phenotypic plasticity is a rapid response mechanism that enables organisms to acclimate and survive in changing environments. The Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) survives and thrives in different and even introduced habitats, thereby indicating its high phenotypic plasticity. However, the underpinnings of the high plasticity of E. sinensis have not been comprehensively investigated. In this study, we conducted an integrated gut microbiome and muscle metabolome analysis on E. sinensis collected from three different environments, namely, an artificial pond, Yangcheng Lake, and Yangtze River, to uncover the mechanism of its high phenotypic plasticity. Our study presents three divergent gut microbiotas and muscle metabolic profiles that corresponded to the three environments. The composition and diversity of the core gut microbiota (Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Tenericutes, and Firmicutes) varied among the different environments while the metabolites associated with amino acids, fatty acids, and terpene compounds displayed significantly different concentration levels. The results revealed that the gut microbiome community and muscle metabolome were significantly affected by the habitat environments. Our findings indicate the high phenotypic plasticity in terms of gut microbiome and muscle metabolome of E. sinensis when it faces environmental changes, which would also facilitate its acclimation and adaptation to diverse and even introduced environments.

  • The physicochemical characteristics of particulate matter emissions from various vehicle's fuel types were studied at the facility of Transport Pollution Research Center(TPRC), National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER), Korea. Three different types of fuels such as gasoline, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and diesel were tested on the NIER driving mode and the constant speed modes(30, 70, and 110 km/h). Chemical composition of submicron particles from vehicle emissions was measured by the High Resolution Time of Flight Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (HR-ToF-AMS) during running cycles. Organics were dominant chemical species of particulate matter emissions for all three different vehicles' fuel types. Moreover, regardless of fuel types, emission rate of organics and inorganics decreased as the average speed of vehicle increased. The portion of fully oxidized fragment families of $C_xH_yO_z$ accounted for over 98% of organic aerosol(OA) in LPG and diesel vehicles, while the relatively high fraction of $C_xH_y$ in OA was observed in gasoline vehicle.
