The Evaluation and Investigation of Conscious Cognition Degree on a room-size air cleaner (실내용 공기청정기의 성능평가 및 인식도 조사)

  • This study was performed on a questionnaire survey of 500 people about their awareness for indoor air pollution, and measured efficiency of air cleaner which can remove the CO and air-borne particulate of ETS(Environmental Tobacco Smoke) in air clean chamber. The room-size cleaner for measuring indoor air contaminants has been applied to evaluation of two different air cleaner such as the mechanic air cleaner with hepafilter(HPA) and the electrostatic air cleaner with metal plate. The measuring experiment was carried out in a chamber by sampling the air. The results obtained were as follows; As respondents are having their 90% of daytime indoors a day, and 38% of them can feel indoor air pollutions degrees directly by their sense of smell, For the installation of indoor pollution control equipment, 34% of all respondents installed air cleaner because of the problem of economical charge and almost respondents was not satisfied the trust of ability purified indoor air pollutants. In the experimental results, it was found that more than 95% of CD and air-borne particulate of ETS were removed within 20 minutes. The reaction kinetics of removal pollutants was verified as the pseudo-first order, Finally, it appeared that the room-sire air cleaner can be applied to new technology for removing indoor air contaminants.

A Study on the Operational Model of Cleaner Production System (청정생산시스템의 실행모형에 관한 연구)

  • Among the activities of industrial companies, manufacturing processes are major sources of environmental problems. So, many companies with manufacturing processes have taken the necessary actions to comply with environmental regulations. But, most of them have mainly focused on the 'end-of-pipe techniques' to reduce pollutants in a short period of time. However, these reactive approaches are basically symptomatic treatments and no more appropriate for sustainable development and growth. The cleaner production, which deals with pollutants at the place of origin, has been introduced as a solution to the problem. In this paper, an operational model of cleaner production system Is proposed and the factors, which affect tile performance of cleaner production, are identified through the field survey of 37 manufacturing companies.

Comprehensive evaluation of cleaner production in thermal power plants based on an improved least squares support vector machine model

  • In order to alleviate the environmental pressure caused by production process of thermal power plants, the application of cleaner production is imperative. To estimate the implementation effects of cleaner production in thermal plants and optimize the strategy duly, it is of great significance to take a comprehensive evaluation for sustainable development. In this paper, a hybrid model that integrated the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) with least squares support vector machine (LSSVM) algorithm optimized by grid search (GS) algorithm is proposed. Based on the establishment of the evaluation index system, AHP is employed to pre-process the data and GS is introduced to optimize the parameters in LSSVM, which can avoid the randomness and inaccuracy of parameters' setting. The results demonstrate that the combined model is able to be employed in the comprehensive evaluation of the cleaner production in the thermal power plants.

Efficiency of Removal for PM10 and $NO_2$ by Air Cleaner in Residential Indoor Environment with Monte-Carlo Simulation (확률론적 모의실험을 이용한 공기청정기의 실내공기중 PM10과 $NO_2$ 제거효율에 관한 연구)

  • We estimated decreasing rate of indoor air pollutants which are PM10 and $NO_2$ by the air cleaner in indoor environment. This study respectively examined concentration of PM10 and $NO_2$ two times in 34 sites located in Seoul and Kyung-gi Do from April to September in 2003. Sectional period was respectively divided for operating the air cleaner and non-operating the air cleaner. Moreover, questionnaire was executed to grasp physical characteristic of objective building and residential characteristic of residents by using method of self-entry. There was a trend that concentration of PM10 and $NO_2$ separated number of residents during operating period respectively decreased among indoor air. According to the existence of smoker in indoor, both concentration of PM10 and $NO_2$ during operating period decreased in each case, and according to existence of pets, both cases decreased concentration of pollutants by operating the air cleaner. We used Monte-Calro simulation to remove uncertainty and identify efficiency of eliminated pollutants such as PM10 and $NO_2$ by the air cleaner. Average efficiency of removal for PM10 and $NO_2$ were 61.84${\pm}$23.04% and 48.67${\pm}$18.03% respectively.

Efficiency of Removal for Indoor air pollutants by Air Cleaners in the Indoor Environments (공기청정기의 일부 실내공기 오염물질 제거효율에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, we investigated $PM_{10},\;NO_2$, and l-hydroxypyrene(1-OHP) in urine at indoor environments which are 35 houses and 20 hospitals for using air cleaner and non-using air cleaner in Seoul metropolitan area and Kyoung-gi province from April, 2003 to February, 2004. Moreover, we examined effect of improvement for indoor air quality and health effect by concentration of 1-OHP also we investigated removal efficiency by air cleaner for $PM_{10},\;NO_2$, and 1-OHP that were 28.5\%,\;27.4\%,\;and\;42.1\%$ respectively. Concentration of$PM_{10},\;NO_2$, and 1-OHP were $19.02\pm18.14{\mu}g/m^3,\;8.66\pm3.06ppb,\;and\;0.19\pm0.18{\mu}g/g$, creatinine when air cleaner was no worked. The concentration for $PM_{10},\;NO_2$. and 1-OHP were $13.60\pm10.79{\mu}g/m^3,\; 6.29\pm2.71ppb,\;and\;0.11\pm0.10{\mu}g/g$ creatinine, respectively. It was significant statistically. Therefore, it is considered using the air cleaner to remove the partial pollutants in indoor environment and is positive effect for health.

Relationship between Office Residents' Activities and Concentration Distribution of Particulate Contaminants Distribution by Operation of Air Cleaner (공기정화기 가동에 따른 사무실 재실자들의 행동성과 입자상 오염물질의 농도 분포 관계에 관한 연구)

  • The reduction efficiency of air cleaner on particulate contaminants such as dust, airborne bacteria and fungi distributed in the office was relatively higher in case of office with workers than office without workers. This result would be attributed to workers' activities and physical characteristics of particulate contaminants. The air cleaner decreased a concentration of airborne bacteria more than airborne fungi, which implicates that difference of dust adsorption between airborne bacteria and fungi would affect an operation efficiency of air cleaner.

  • Our study from Feburary to March, 2003, were done in university office A and B, located in Seoul. This study was carried out to investigate the reduction of the airborne fungi before and after we activate the air cleaner which using ionization. And the method of assessment was done by the CAMNEA method. The result was as follows. 1. In the research office A, the concentration of the airborne fungi was 18(${\pm}$11.3) CFU/㎥ before the ionizing air cleaner system was turned on: whereas three days after this result the concentration decreased to less than 1 CFU/㎥. 2. In the laboratory office B, the concentration was 210.6(${\pm}$5.3) CFU/㎥ before using the air cleaner and was decreased to 32.2(t 10.3) CFU/㎥ after using the air cleaner.   • We have developed an electrostatic precipitation (ESP) type air cleaner for indoor air quality and investigated its performances regarding CADR (Clean air delivery rate), single-pass efficiency and gas removal efficiency. The ESP air cleaner used an ACF (Activated carbon fiber) filter for gas removal and the ACF as a high voltage electrode for particle removal. The ESP air cleaner was tested in a chamber with the volume of $1m^3$ regarding CADR and gas removal efficiency. The applied CADR area of the ESP was $1.8m^2$. Gas removal efficiency was tested with 3 gases (Acetaldehyde, Acetic acid, Ammonia). As the results of the gas removal efficiency, the ESP air cleaner shows the removal efficiencies of 90, 98 and 85% for acetaldehyde, acetic acid and ammonia, respectively.

Reduction Effect of Airborne Pollutants in Pig Building by Air Cleaner Operated with Plasma Ion (플라즈마 이온 방식의 공기정화기를 이용한 돈사내 공기오염물질 저감 효과)

  • This field study was performed to evaluate the efficiency of a plasma ion-operated air cleaner in temporal reduction of airborne pollutants emitted from a pig housing facility. In the case of gaseous pollutants, the plasma ion air cleaner was not effective in reducing levels of ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, nitrogen dioxide, or sulfur dioxide (p>0.05). In the case of particulate pollutants, however, the air cleaner was effective in reducing levels of particulate matter ($PM_{2.5}$ and $PM_1$) by 79(${\pm}6.1$) and 78(${\pm}3.0$)%, respectively. Unlike the case of these fine particle fractions, the reduction of total suspended particles (TSP) and $PM_{10}$ following treatment was almost negligible. In the case of biological pollutants, the mean reduction efficiencies for airborne bacteria and fungi were relatively low at 22(${\pm}6.6$) and 25(${\pm}8.7$)%, respectively. Taken together, these results indicate that in terms of air pollutants released from this pig housing facility, the plasma ion air cleaner was primarily effective in reducing levels of $PM_{2.5}$ and $PM_1$.
